Wow, no <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=105454">Ronald Acuna</a></span> update!
The link to the Closer Grid is to Apple.com.
Thoughts on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=59768">Danny Santana</a></span>?
Where's <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Chris+Davis">Chris Davis</a></span>? And when will Gonny Jomes be called up?
Thanks, well cross him off then. Guessing he'll still go in my deep NL-Only league. By the end of the reserves we are basically paying for a pulse.
Wondering why <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=109151">Jae-gyun Hwang</a></span> wasn't even an honorable mention. Was he discussed? Thoughts?
Did I miss something or is <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=102123">Alex Reyes</a></span> not on either list? Wondering where he would have been pre-TJS and if there was any discussion of him being somewhere 100-150, assuming you get maybe post-All-Star break 2018 plus 125 <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=IP" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('IP'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">IP</span></a> in 2019.
1. Connor Greene is going to steal your girlfriend.
"Wait where is Marcel Ozuna?" [googles him.] "ah turned 26 last week."
Happy Belated Birthday Marcel Ozuna!
How far down is <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70851">Mallex Smith</a></span> on the 25-and-under ranking?
Maybe the hitter award should be named for <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=52260">David Peralta</a></span>? He was the first "successful" hitter that I remember BP making a "big deal" about not including in the Annual.
I will say it's one of my favorite fun features.
What about <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Daniel+Hudson">Daniel Hudson</a></span>, he seems set pitching the 8th in Arizona. You still think he's behind both Clippard and Baracho?
This seems to open up a whole new can of worms. If it was me, I'd churn my reserve players through trades just to get my numbers up.
A rule I wanted to put in, would base the draft order on 2nd half finish. Our stats service allows you to track the all-star break through end of the season standings separately, so I wanted money finishers pick at the end of the draft in reverse order of finish, while other picks do it in how they finished in the 2nd half. This will keep owners interested and maybe limit dump trades.
Also good is how Tout Wars does it, where teams finishing below a certain point threshold are docked FAAB the following year.
Well <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=31366">Prince Fielder</a></span> and <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=1499">David Ortiz</a></span> played fewer than 20 games at 1B last year.
4C-R = 1B, 3B, LF & RF (the four corner positions)
I think I remember the Pirates or Royals once forgetting to protect a player and then using their own pick to keep him.
Was hoping to see a write-up on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=67072">Joc PEderson</a></span> here.
Given the recent increased focus on the growing lack of diversity in managerial hiring, I wonder if it's linked to shift in GM hiring? Black enrollment in the Ivies is at about 10% same as percentage in MLB.
Did Profar play the field or did he DH again? I'm excited for his return, but would love to see him get some defensive reps in.
Odubell Herrera and <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=60645">Ben Paulsen</a></span>.
wow, <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=68997">Roberto Osuna</a></span> doesn't get an honorable mention for mid-season?
passed out 50 cards to kids at Marlins game? so every kid got 2? I joke. Such a great stadium, if only the product would match.
Why does Tout decide to end 2 weeks before the end of the season?
What about <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=52296">Jon Jay</a></span>?
How does the acquisition of <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=656">Marlon Byrd</a></span> impact Blanco? I'd think it would dim his star a little by cutting into his PT.
What about <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=59584">Aaron Altherr</a></span>? Assuming his call-up occurred after the article's deadline, but given his minor league numbers this year and that the Phillies have nothing to play for, I'm assuming regular PT for Altherr, maybe taking time from Jeff Francouer with <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=69512">Cody Asche</a></span> going back to 3rd.
Thoughts on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=59145">Marcell Ozuna</a></span>? I've been holding on to him in a deep league with deep benches. Are the Marlins just messing with the poor guy?
We were lucky, it manifested itself through toe-walking and balance, we were able to get him tested and approved for early intervention, I only wish we got into EI even earlier.
On a personal note too: you are the first adult I've been in contact with who has SPI.
Thanks Russell, one of my twin sons (currently 3 1/2) was diagnosed with sensory processing issues (primarily sensory seeking w/ some vestibular ) and from readign I've done and people we've talked with mention the link between ADHD and SPI.
I have heard that people with sensory processing issues often have ADHD too, is this correct?
Also I assume if a player had a sensory processing issue (either sensory seeking or sensory adverse) playing any pro sport would be hard. In my limited experience, I think given the rhythm of baseball it would e particularly hard for a sensory seeker.
Jario Labourt is now in the Tigers' organization from the <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=David+Price">David Price</a></span> deal, does this at all change his ETA or any other part of the scouting report? Or is a players's organization a non-issue in these reports?
I assume non-issue since these are eyewitness accounts, but in general, how much does a player's org figure into scouting reports, like how certain teams tend to be better/ worse at developing certain positions and/or kind of players.
1. Even teams out of contention who are sitting on a FAAB war chest should spend it on the big names at the deadline, the big names cross-over players are trade-able commodities, especially in leagues that do not have an in-season roster cap.
2. For keeper/ dynasty leagues or AL/NL-Only leagues I do not understand why one would have a 8/1 trade deadline, shouldn't it at least be the transactions period after post-MLB trade deadline transaction period so teams know the results of their FAAB purchases? Also with more and more waiver trades being made in August, if you are in an -Only LEague then you should have a 9/1 trade deadline because to lose a key player to crossing leagues and not be able to trade to fill the hole.
was wondering how the guys listed as Diamondbacks draftees ended-up on the Cubs when I couldn't think of a trade between the two teams.
Given where I'll probably finish, I can keep 8.
Profar is a FA in my 18-team mixed league, if I add him he'll be $10 next year, worth it?
Was <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=68688">Drew Smyly</a></span> considered for the list? He pitched in a sim game and about to start his rehab assignment, I would place him above Morrow, thoughts?
1. Didn't know Beaz used to be a position player.
2. <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Jesus+Montero">Jesus Montero</a></span>, phew, Yanks sold high thankfully.
3. <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/column/TINSTAAPP/">TINSTAAPP</a>. I loved <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=58343">Casey Kelly</a></span>.
died before his time. R.I.P. KG.
actually, I thought the previous period closed 2 weeks ago, and there is a quiet period between then and July 2.
The Yankees are now out of the running on Martinez, since last year's period is closed and they now can't sign sign a player for above $300,000 for either of the next two years, correct?
Were these list compiled before or after <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=100595">David DAhl</a></span> got injured? And how does/did the injury effect his ranking?
also how in the world does sunscreen help your grip? my hands are slippery after using sunscreen.
Two Big Unit memories:
1. Being invited, no ordered by my friends shortly before my wedding to take the train from NY-DC and then the red-eye Megabus home, all to see Johnson go for win #300. The game was rained out.
2. <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=17761">John Kruk</a></span>'s at-bat against Johnson in thew 1993 <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/column/new_column/">All-Star Game</a>: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SH715tr6ek
thanks Shaun, don't know how I missed it.
Are we getting a Call-up Report on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70397">Austin Hedges</a></span> or is that coming tomorrow?
A team drafts a pitcher like Sanchez in the 1st rnd in hopes that he can be a solid contributor to the starting rotation. I'm guessing they envisioned his floor being that of a #3-SP. Yes, a solid-to-excellent contributor out of the bullpen who is possible closer material is still very helpful to a contending team, the Blue Jays still have to be disappointed.
I took a look at first round picks for the past 10 or so MLB drafts, and the pitchers who became closers were college guys, unlike Sanchez who is a HS player.
Is there plans to keep publishing the BP Futures Guide?
Can't wait until the first Cubs-Astros series. Maybe a special Up&In Podcast with Kevin & The Prof. guesting on Effectively Wild? Kevin wagers his fedora against Jason's Larry Wilcox autograph?
How long before a story like this features Prof. PArks?
ok, I choose to pretend #8 never happened. I prefer to remember Oct. 16, 2003.
Favorite Extra-inning game: Oct. 4, 1995. Yanks 7 Mariners 5.
While not a Mets fan, I am surprised no one included Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS.
Or the infamous 1985 Mets- Braves 4th of July game that went 19 innings and included two rain delays, two ejections, Keith Hernandez hitting for the cycle. Pitcher Rick Camp tieng the game on Homer in the 18th only to lose it in the 19th.
Oh yeah it ended with 4th of July fireworks at 4am.
Bill White: He was the straight man to the Scooter, Phil Rizzuto's homerism and stories that were interrupted by play-by-play. How many announcers went on to become League presidents? White was the last good Yankee broadcaster (ok maybe George Grande)
Most amusing Yankee radio pair was when Charlie Steiner was doing the games w/ Sterling, they had ZERO chemistry, it sounded like they were broadcasting the games from totally separate booths with a sound mixer trying to combine the audio.
Lucas Giolito #wet
Read that Jordan Pacheco going to play 3rd at least until Cliff Pennington comes back. Also Andy Marte a BA Top 10 prospect from a decade ago called up by the D-backs. Bet they wish they still had Matt Davidson.
Does the potential of being on the short side of a platoon merit a down arrow for Khris Davis?
Maybe Betances and Melky know each other from their time in the minors with the Yankees.
Tucker has plus-plus #rig to write "Sometimes we need to overlook the tools...,"
Mike, great article.
A few questions/ comments:
1. I'm in a similar league, we have an in-season cap of $320, why/ how did your league agree to $35?
2. How big are your reserve rosters? I ask because I would think some of the contenders w/ a good amount of FAAB left would bid high, to try and keep the pitchers away from the other contenders. I would bid high and then deal with trying to fit them on my team afterwards.
3. I tend to follow team J's strategy, I bid early and often trying to catch guys before they hit it big, figuring a full season of someone like that beats 2+ months of top player. I let others hoard FAAB for the cross-overs, because who knows if there will be cross-overs and if there are then you are battling the other hoarders and could easily be left with tons of faab and no players.
No Roger Angel pieces? Shocked.
"BS questions" the double meaning is priceless.
Jeff, what is the purpose of your league rule that doesn't allow $25+ FAAB players to be traded? I've heard of other leagues that do it, but never understood what behavior the rule is meant to curb/eliminate. If anything it seems to hurt teams in the bottom of league that are trying to rebuild.
We need MLB and FIFA/UEFA to co-ordinate so there is either World Cup or European Championship games during the MLB deadspots in even years. In odd years there can be the Confederations Cup in the year before the World Cup, leaving one year, hmmm.
I do like the idea of Futures game on Wednesday, or bring in the Double-A and Triple-A all-star games play them at the MLB site. One today and one tomorrow, or do a double-header.
why your hatred for AL/NL-Only Leagues? They allow for doing really deep leagues without having too many people. To do a deep mixed league you need like 15 owners, with an Only you can do it with 11.
So no mention of Ken Giles on the Phillies list? not even as 2nd to Bastardo?
Is Alfonso Alcantara related to Arismendy Alcantara?
I thought you need to have made an MLB appearance to be part of of the MLBPA.
then Adam Eaton should be listed with the White Sox.
Love these pieces.
wow, didn't realize Betts's hit tool graded out so well.
I know, especially for the Yankees, see my comment in the future GM post.
Second day in a row the Yankees 2006 Draft gets a mention on BP.
Also in Roto: don't be afraid to make what might look like a lopsided trade based on the players, it's the categories that matter. If you are secure in HR & RBIs but need saves then go ahead and trade the big bat for the best closer you can get.
Kennedy, Chamberlain, Robertson, Melancon, Betances plus George Kontos and Zach McAllister. So IPK tearing it up, Joba looks reborn in Detroit. Robertson and Melancon currently closing. Bettances just struck out 4 guys as you were reading my comment. Kontos & McAllister are replacement level pitchers.
Kennedy and Joba are 5th & 6th in WAR among 2006 11st rnd picks despite being taken 21st and 41st.
Look at the Yankee drafts after 2006: Nothing.
2005: Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson
2004: Phil Hughes and Mike Dunn
2003: Tyler Clippard and Jeff Karstens
2002:Phil Coke & Dane De La Rosa
2001: Despite having five picks in the first two rounds the best player they got was Shelly Duncan.
So while the Yankees 2006 Draft was not the 1968 Dodgers draft of: Bill Buckner, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Bobby Valentine, Geoff Zahn, Joe Ferguson and Tom Paciorek.
It was still pretty solid, especially for the Yankees given their history.
There is no incentive for the Cubs to promote Bryant, regarding playing control and 40-man roster issues. They are 8.5 games out of the Wild Card. Team can not try and win the pennant every year, the Cubs are trying to win just not in 2014.
Schwarber will be a real weapon if he's able to stay behind the plate.
the whitest name...EVER!
Thanks JP. I guess the clock on my fifteen minutes has started.
Annoyed at myself for taking Jonathan Gray over Butler in my NL-Only Reserves. Now I'm going to have to blow the FAAB wad.
Twin boys 2 1/2. Planning on taking them to Citi Field on a Sunday. Will get there late stay until the end and then they can run the bases. Wife's idea to take them I was willing to wait until they are older.
It's a mixed marriage:I'm a born and raised Yankees fan (suffered through the Steinbrenner 80s) She is from Jersey but from Boston-stock so she roots for the Sawx. We decided to raise the boys Mets fans. (It's like a Jew and a Catholic raising their kids Lutheran)
Great piece of writing Russell.
I like wondering about 2008 "What Ifs": Tampa takes Buster Posey over Tim Beckham at #1? Catcher has been a weakness for the Rays for as long as they've been around.
Or what if the Marlins went with local boy Yonder Alonso instead of HS catcher Kyle Skipworth?
Or if the Yankees had managed to sign Gerrit Cole as the 28th pick the same year?
The pick is one of the Competitive Balance picks, that came in to existence w/ the most recent CBA. I am not sure what the determining factors are for who gets them and I think the order of them is random. The Competitive Balance picks can be traded.
I think this is the third trade of the picks since they were instituted.
With Butler, Colorado Springs is such a hitters' haven, that it's not really the place for a pitcher to practice pitching to contact, could be very demoralizing.
Great piece. What depth leagues is this information targeted to?
Ideas for next column: Adam LaRoche or Pablo Sandoval.
Will the Pirates develop Reed as a hitter or a pitcher?
Was this list done before the news on Jurikson Profar being out longer than expected? if yes, how far did he fall as a result and if not how much of an adjustment would be made?
Wasn't Dalton Pompey the head coach of the Mighty Ducks? (Yes I know it was Gordon Bombay, but close enough)
Are managers able to see Pitch f/x data in-game? Is there someone following along in the clubhouse that could relay the information to the manager?
I know there is a tradition of the next game starter doing pitch charting, is this still necessary if a manager could get real-time Pitch f/x?
Why did Casey Kelley drop off the Honorable Mentions? Did he have a bad rehab start or other guys have better weeks/ look more promising?
wow, sounds like the worst-case scenario for Moran. Seems like disappointing/ slow developing MLB hit tool is becoming a hallmark of UNC-Chapel Hill players.
At what point is a player considered a strong bullpen candidate instead of a mid- or back-rotation starter?
In reading the report on Matz, a future plus-FB with a solid curve seems like he could make for a lights-out 8th inning guy. Is that something of a last resort? Do teams value a 4th or 5th starter more than a set-up guy?
wondering how these exceptions compare to the previous CBA.
Also fun to think about how things can go wrong, such as if
1.Google maps goes out of business during the cba then what?
2. Interesting that the A's lose the exemption even if they stay in-market and nothing related to ballpark size.
How is "2 flavors" of a slider, different from 2 different pitches? Does on of the sliders grad out better than the other?
Were the 2010-12 Draft strong in prep hitters because that could explain the week collegiate hitter crop this year, if they all signed out of HS.
Or is it more of a cyclical thing?
Is anyone tracking "Ben's Random X to do Y" and how they perform?
Springer has Major League #want while Heatcott has Major League #slack.
I think Bocachica (aka Girly Mouth) had a solid couple of years in Japan.
Is Brody Westmoreland the brother of Ryan Westmoreland, the Red Sox prospect whose career ended because he had a brain condition that required two-surgeries?
I remember pre-Wright that Mets 3rd base was a black hole going back to HoJo same thing w/ Yankee SS pre-Jeter.
Not injured, so a step in the right direction.
I'm surprised Giolito starting at a lower than Urias. I guess different teams different philosophies, players different needs.
As an NL-Only leaguer I find this is a great addition to BP's Fantasy coverage. Hopefully it will help me eek-out some extra counting stats that will put me over the top.
maybe trade down. offer to flip-flop 1st & 2nd picks (maybe a little juice late too) to drop down a few slots, should still be able to get Braun and then get a better on the turn.
What about Billy Burns? or is his 8 SB this spring put him squarely on everyone's radar?
Had a GF that didn't understand baseball, we went to a Dodgers-Orioles SS Spring Training game which I Hoped I could use to explain the sport to her. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. We broke up a week later.
How far/close to making the list were Billy Burns (the poor man's Billy Hamilton?) and Japhet Amador?
I hadn't really heard of Burns until this off-season, while Amador is old for a prospect, but Houston's first base is wide-open and Amador can really rake.
"Theres no chance he's 180; he has to be over 200."
Like the guy at the CitiField BP Q&A said, that why do you take the heights and weights for granted, why don't you guys measure every player yourself. IT'S A CONSPIRACY!
I always remember Benito Santiago with the best MLB catcher's arm of my lifetime. The way he would gun down runners not from the squat but basically from his knees.
Now with the increased focus on pitch-framing, I wonder if scouts have adjusted how they scout catchers. It has to be hard to scout a catcher's framing ability while sitting behind the plate rather than from a head-on perspective.
Also amusing Gerritt Cole listed right above Cole Hamels, so it reads:
It took me a moment figure it out.
Jario Beras, where do you project him to start the season/ end the season?
I think the 2011 Nationals had the best Makeup: http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18656kibhx41pjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg
Got Marte in 12-team NL Only 5x5: despite the AVOID tag, should I still extend him from $5 to $10 for this year and next?
How close was Colin Moran to making this list?
Prof. Parks: Seems like an above average amount of 2013 draftees, is this a fluke or do you think it's because of the earlier signing period allowing them to get professional (wood bat) experience and pro-scouts to get a look at them against better competition?
Also: where would Billy Zabaka rank?
wow seems like a big fall for Marisnick.
What about Rymer Lirano, how do you evaluate a hitter who loses a year to injury?
Also seems like an above average amount of 2013 draftees, is this a fluke or do you think it's because of the earlier signing period allowing them to get professional (wood bat) experience?
Thoughts on CarGo's wrist? Thinking of keeping him in deep NL-Only league at $47 (5x5 usually 20%+ inflation)
Also any chance Jonathan Gray cracks the rotation coming out Spring Training?
add Kelly Johnson to the mix. Wondering if hes Cano insurance or the Yankees might actually have a usable bench player this year. Also maybe instead of signing Cano they package Gardner and a blocked prospect to the Reds for Phillips.
Would the arrow be UP or SIDEWAYS for Leonys Martin? Now with Gentry gone he should get some of the starts vs. LHP while that would hurt his BA/OBP it should add a few runs and steals.
RIP Kevin. Gone but not forgotten.
This list has plus-plus #Sparkle and Plus #Rig.
Yan Gomes: Plus good back story, he's the 1st Brazilian to play in the majors.
Nate Freiman: Jewish, what a mensch! Wonder what damage he could have wrought if the 'Stros kept him. Minute Maid would fit nicely w/ his swing.
Will be interested to see how high the top pitcher will go. Assuming it's Kershaw (w/ Wainwright close behind).
124 pts? is it 5x5 14-teamer?
Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera: so we have another source to argue about with them.
I always liked Hee Sop Choi. I was interested in seeing him
Why is Tommy Hunter considered the Jim Johnson insurance and not Darren O'Day?
What about Jackie Bradley? I know he was listed at #80 in the preseason, while he didn't impress in his first stint at Boston, he looked better in his short 2nd go-around. He seems like a high floor/ low ceiling guy.
Thoughts on Jason Grimm facing MAriners and Astros?
Tyler Jordan: Honorable Mention?
Why did Casey Janssen get moved down?
Any update on the NYC event?
Interesting article. Mike, makes me wonder about the other side of the coin, about the first team to "go all in", my gut is they tend to win more because they get close to the best players out there and for the longest time, also interested based on the current standing of a team when they go all in, fodder for another column?
I heards Parks answered by saying, "Lindor."
thanks. Really helpful article. Now what about Dillon Gee?
how long is Danny Hultzen out for? an chance he gets a call-up in the 2nd half?
Ryan Westmoreland and Rocco Baldelli: Two players from Rhode Island. Maybe the island is cursed? Or Paul Konerko has stolen their health for himself?
well i'm sure the Rays agree w/ the Face Palm over not taking Posey.
wondering what some of your hits & misses have been over the past 5 years. Like did you take Matusz where the ORioles did or did you pass on Hosmer for him? What about Sonny Gray?
man I had that in paperback from m HS years. I bet it's buried in some storage box. I will be getin the new-edition e-book.
ok, both of my leagues allow only for weekly transactions and wondering if this is workable for that I guess the Home/road is easier given Lefty/righty there is a greater chance for last minute pitching changes. Using the home/ road wonder how I would work it if each team is home for part of the week and on the road for the ther. would the answer be to start the player whose road series is at the better pitcher's park?
Paul, what about Yonder Alonso. he had prett solid power numbers, especially at Petco. with the fences being moved wondering how man if any of his doubles, become HR.
Jason Bay, ummm Larry Walker and Joey Votto!
how about Pro. Parks stepping up and contributing his All-Texas team? they could battle California for the title of Best Burrito and Ohio fo the Chili Bowl title.
Not a converted releiver, but wondering your thoughts of Lynn vs. Vogelsong.
For the league total. i can't imagine a leage were each team has 200 keepers.
Figure a league with 10-12 teams, then a shallow league would have about 3 keepers per team, medium would have 5-6, Deep about 9 keepers. AL/NL only: about 60. and super deep 15-20.
Kevin congrats on being re-united with Up & IN man-crush Jose Altuve.
Are he Mariners sending Hultzen to the AFL? I would think that they might want to rest him and not put him in such a strong hitting environment.
Here's hoping the next entry in the series is the other Beckham of the 2008 Draft.
If I recall from a Rchmond Braves set of cards I had, Eichelberger's name is even more awesome becasue the card said it was Juan Tyrone Eichelberger III, how 'bou that!
I rememeber sitting in the LF Bleachers for a Yankees-Mariners ALCS game (2000 I think), and one of the greatest chants ever, "Halaaaaaaa-mma, I slept with your Maaaaaa-mma!" (and John Halama is from Brooklyn, his mom was probably in the stadium)
"It says 'Breakfast Any time', I'll have Eggs in the Age of Enlightenment."
"I should have said Rennaissance"
"Here are your eggs Voltaire."
With Dominguez gettign the call right to the Majors, does that mean the Astros are going to move Johnson to 1B and play Dominguez at 3B. or wil lthere be nother roster move and the return of Brett Wallace to play 1B?
love the series. How abou the Yankees killer B's: Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances. Also love to see one on Dominic Brown.
what about Derek Holland? I think given his Jeckyll & Hyde tendencies he might be an interestign palyer to tackle for this column. On the position player side: Daniel Espinosa.
Could we dip the Slim-jims into the Communal Cheese?
Also I'm calling dibs on "Communal Cheese" for my Fantasy Baseball team name for 2012.
Questions about your optimal lineup construction from "The Book":
why bat your 5th best hitter 3rd instead of your 3rd or 4th best hitter? I am assuming it's to prevent the lineup from being too top heavy?
The other is why in the AL you bat your worst hitter 9th and in the NL you bat the pithcer (your worst hitter) 8th? Is this because of just how bad pitchers are at hitting that it becomes optimal to bat them 9th, and at what point would the worst hitter on an AL team have to be for it to be optimal to bat them 8th and not 9th?
What makes the baseball playoffs great was always the simplicty of them. As the number of teams increase the sport gets closer to the NHL, where a hot goalie can lead an 8th seed to Stanley Cup finals; in baseaball the equivlent of the "hot goalie" is the hot starter (or two). The larger the playoffs the more diluted both the regular season and post-season product becomes. By exapnding the palyoffs, Selig is firing shots at the Golden Goose, the more shots he takes, at some point he's going to kill it.
wow the Astros playoff chances are the same as Bluto's gpa in "Animal House." Wondering what team hit sub-0.1% in playoffs odds the fewest games into the season.
Johnny Damon: Passion of the Christ, based mainly on his 2004 look.
As a Yankees fan who subscribed to Baseball America in high school I eagerly await the Brien Taylor entry, even Mike Kelly who went #2 that year could make the list.
Other players I'd like to see: Tyler Houston, Andy Marte, Brooks Kieschnick, and maybe Jeffrey Hammonds. I thought he was going to be a breakout star.
Negro Leaguer Max Manning was known as Dr. CYCLOPS, and there was STORM Davis. While not superhero, but movie monster, Hideki Matsui as GODZILLA. Rex Hudler was "Wonder Dog" and my two favorites: Mike Epstein: SUPER JEW. And Antonio Afonseca should be Dr. Octopus, he was known as the Octopus.
Also the Green Bay Bullfrogs are the Northwoods League, which is probably the #2 Collegiate Summer League, behind only the Cape Cod League. Yes that's even more tenuous than saying Columbus, Ohio has pro football & basketball because of OSU, but it's something.
I remember about 3 yrs ago, there was a Fantasy Baseball event at Housing Works w/ Sam Walker and Ron Shandler. Another great bookstore in NYC for events is Strand, they had a great one for the writers of the new Free Darko book for all you hoop fans out there.
Billy Beane Didn't Write Moneyball and other corrections of Joe Morgan.
"Sheehan My Dad Says"
"Tuesdays With Torii"
Could Beltran have a degenerative condition in his knee simillar to what Bo Jackson had with his hip? This is based on nothing other than my recollections of the the aftermath of Bos' surgery/ rehab.
Really? I agree with Kendrick. But regarding Weeks vs. Prado, I'd have to say it's a draw. Prado might have a better chance than Weeks to put up a solid season, but Weeks has a better chance to put up an excellent season than Prado. I haven't checked, but I'd venture to guess that the high-end projection for Weeks is is better than the high end projection for Prado.
Where do you meet? Big Curling buff in NYC. currently "between" jobs, so looking forward to the 123.5 hours of curling.

Gameday Audio is and has been $15 for the entire year and you get every game and both home and road radio broadcasts. I have had it on my computer and nothing gets me through work faster than being able to an afternoon game feed going on as a I work. Especially love getting Scully or Uecker in the afternoon.
actually so are the Marlins. The stadium was privately financed by then owner Joe Robbie, thus it was initially named after him. Not sure if any government monies have been used on the stadium since.
I\'m also a huge fan of Junior\'s Cheese Cake. They also deliver.
