5 stars just means that Jacksons floor is that off an everyday centerfielder, with the potential to be even better. That's a pretty valuable player, hence the 5 star rating.
It's sad to see Grady go. Am I correct in remembering that he is one of, if not the only, baseball player to undergo micro-fracture surgery? If so it would be nice to see the CHIPPER folks have a look at Grady and his future prognosis as well as a recap of the ins-and-outs of his surgeries.
Yonder Alonso + George Costanza type offer = Bowdens Big Move.
Is there any accounting for variances between individual umpires? Are there some umpires that are more easily "fooled" by a well framed pitch in certain areas of the strike zone?
For as much crap as Youkilis gave every injured Red Sox last year you sure don't hear him complaining about himself that much. Whatever happened to gutting it out Youk?
This is great! An awesome addition to BP.
I remember reading somewhere that 400 PO for a CF was considered the gold standard. Is that still a good quick measure of a CF range and defense? It's just amazing to see the number of PO that Andrew Jones put up in his prime or Kirby Puckett with that bowling ball of a body getting to so many balls.
As a Cleveland Indians fan living in a town predominately Native American I can sympathize. I love the organization, its staff, and players but hate not being able to wear the majority of their apparel.
Chief Wahoo needed to go decades ago. Most of the Natives where I live don't even have a problem with the team name just that stupid Chief Wahoo logo! Get rid of it switch to the stylized I and put this all behind us.
Great, interesting work! Any future plans to work with and integrate pitchF/X data into SIERA?
No one gets down and Wang Chungs anymore? Seriously people its a reference to an 80's pop masterpiece. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go Spin Right Round Baby Right Round.
Its cool that Mike Marshall is starting to get some more mainstream exposure (like being on MLB Network) not that I agree/disagree with him at all. I don't know enough to have a solid opinion either way. Different viewpoints in baseball can never be a bad thing.
What kind of work load do you expect Stephen to get through the year? Is 150 IP the upper limit of what we'll see from him?
Not that I dislike Buck as a TV "personality" but he has to be one of the blandest, boring big time game callers on television.
Bronson is a breath of fresh air for the whole supplement issue. He's honest and indifferent at the same time. Perhaps only a player of his minuscule stature can afford to be so upfront about what he takes. I wish more players would be willing to be this open in the future.
I wonder how much Dolan and other small and mid market teams will push for a "worldwide draft and slotting system" as he puts it. Part of me thinks that the next collective bargaining agreement is going to bring some MAJOR changes.
Thats why its like heaven when you can sync up a radio broadcast with the game on television.
Amen to the end of column rant! How the MLB has gone this long mucking up what should be one of the more exciting plays in baseball is beyond me.
How much of this is Beane being handicapped by payroll though? Would he have traded all of those guys if he could have afforded to keep them?
This may be a debate for another column but couldn't it be that more of the countries best athletes commit to football now as opposed to earlier decades when baseball seemed to field the best athletes? Just an observation but with football being the most popular national sport that last decade or so it makes some sense.
