Where do you think Jackson winds up? With Freeman entrenched at 1B, it would seem that another possible position is blocked. Is there enough of an upside bat to find him a defensive home, or is he moving into Calhoun type territory that an AL team is more likely his final destination.
Mark - Outside of the hit streak for Siri, is the power/speed combo something that is intriguing or do you not believe in a long-term prospect rise from him?
Wilson - Love the daily update! Thoughts on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=104833">Jordan Luplow</a></span>? Another nice night yesterday, 3-5 <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=HR" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('HR'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">HR</span></a>, <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=SB" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('SB'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">SB</span></a>, which brings him up to 21 HRs, .300 average and .380 <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=OBP" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('OBP'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">OBP</span></a> across two levels. I guess there may have been some performance age-relative to league in AA, but he has continued to rake in AAA. From what I've read, he has always had plus power, but not shown it in games. Are we seeing a transformation, because he seems to be putting it together?
Thanks Mark. Keep up the great work! I know there are always going to be some performances left off, just seems that Burnes is pretty dominant each time out.
Love the updates, but what will it take to get some love for <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=107554">Corbin Burnes</a></span>? Guy dominates week in and week out, but seems to rather unnoticed here in the updates.
Greg - These retrospective comparisons really provide a good perspective of what you guys deal with. It would be interesting to see further pieces like this. Keep up the great work!
As always, quality stuff from BP. Was <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70804">Derek Fisher</a></span> in the conversation? Was surprised not to see him.
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=100281">Ronald Guzman</a></span> has gone off the last few games. Tapping into his raw power finally?
Wilson - Enjoyed the write-up. As Altherr heads into his prime, and assuming a full-time gig, what do you think his upside for power/speed/average? Is there any other guy you liken him to? Thanks and keep up the great articles!
What kind of power projection do you envision for Sierra? Is somewhere between 10-15 at his prime what we are looking at?
Enjoyed this! Another is <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=67744">Adam Duvall</a></span>.
Wilson - What do you think the ceiling is on Mendez?
Plus one. Really enjoyed these write-ups. Would make for a great weekly or bi-weekly column, imo.
Good to see Nottingham is making progress with the glove, as that was the knock that he would not stick behind the plate. Glove aside, where does he rank with the bat among catching prospect in the game?
Another fairly dominant performance by <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70473">Joe Musgrove</a></span> last night. Is he gaining traction on your lists?
Did <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=69012">Dilson Herrera</a></span> qualify? If he did not, where would he have ranked?
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=60007">Jason Kipnis</a></span>? Think he is more or less what we saw from him last year, or that he provides a little more pop/speed in '16?
I think the Sox were initially hoping that he would get some reps at 3B in Winter Ball, then he got injured. If he can show that he is an adequate defender, he may take some playing time away from Sandoval, who I suspect, again with the weight issues and poor performance in Boston may be playing his way out the door there too.
Shaw put up some pretty impressive numbers when given the opportunity. Is this more the belief he won't get the at-bats? Do you think he is a solid investment long-term?
Do you think <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70388">Greg Bird</a></span> will get enough at-bats to be fantasy relevant this year?
Devers may be a special case. Relative to some other high profile bats that you've seen over the years, who would you liken him to at this same stage in his development? While the sky may be the limit, where does he grade out for you on power/hit tool if it goes right? Great work guys.
Bret - Who do you think will ultimately get more playing time between Rua and Smolinski when all is said and done?
Wilson - Enjoyed the write up. Roto question, can you rank Hahn, Stroman, Paxton and Salazar. Thanks.
I echo Bobbygrace's comments. Sahadev, I enjoyed this piece, albeit I wish it were under different circumstances.
To Oscar's family, friends and the Cardinals' organization, my thoughts and prayers to a life that was cut far too short. May you find peace and happiness in your memories of Oscar.
To me, Cecchini's profile sounds awfully familiar to another former Red Sox third baseman, Kevin Youkilis. Any similarities there?
As noted yesterday, BP is like a system that keeps graduating top talent, while replenishing the farm with more high ceiling quality. Good luck Gents in your new roles. Very exciting.
I know throwing comps is sometimes lazy, but at this stage who would you liken Devers to?
BP is like a system that keeps graduating top talent, while replenishing the farm with more high ceiling quality. Good luck Gents in your new roles.
OB - Thanks for sharing. It does sound then that he is very fortunate all things considered. Baseball aside, I just hope he lives a long healthy, and most importantly happy, life. It puts the game in perspective.
Very scary on Buxton. I think it may even be pre-mature to assume he will return for the AFL too. Long-term the concussion may be a far worse injury then a broken bone. The studies on concussions and the after-effects, especially a serious one, are staggering. Hopefully there are no cognitive issues moving forward.
Thoughts on Rijo's future power grade, maybe a 55, would that be his ceiling?
Jeff - Thoughts on Christian Walker? He looks like he is handling the move to AAA pretty well, small sample size, but do you think he has the profile to be a first division 1B-type?
Nick - Does this fall on Luhnow ultimately? I would think there's got to be accountability for this ineptitude. It might be at the end of the season, but don't you think the captain should go down with the ship on this one?
Alfredo Simon co-leading the league in wins!
Anyone going to be able to get to the GCL to put some eyes on Devers? Jason wrote about him as a guy to keep an eye on, and wow, he is tearing it up.
Rowan Wick. Insane what he's doing right now, albeit in rookie ball.
Dariel Alavarez - 4 for 6 with a HR, 2bs and 6RBI. Did his stat line fly under the radar? Thoughts on him?
Before he was traded, would Dilson Herrera been in consideration for the back end of the top 10?
How far down the list did Jonathan Reynoso slide? Did you see/hear anything that has soured your views on him from last year?
Dorsyss Paulino - how far below these guys was he?
Does Gennett have enough bat to off-set the questionable def. at 2nd? What kind of triple stat line would you expect from him?
Well done gents, have very much enjoyed these and the analysis. Thoughts on where Salty bats in the Marlins' lineup? Right behind Stanton?
Really curious about that trade. Did Fister's velocity drop last year? Maybe the Tigers know something we don't (ie. masking an injury, or something like that).
What kind of ERA/WHIP/Ks would you predict for Salazar, provided he gets close to 200ips.
Thanks. Keep up the great work, love these!
Jumping on board to echo the congrats and best of luck. Also a cudos to Jason for recognizing their abilities and bringing them into the BP fold. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before two new up and comers are added. Well done BP for your continued excellence.
Pinto capable of .275 avg/.350 OBP about 15-20hrs?
Jeff - From the fall/winter leagues, it would seem that Amador is playing his way into the conversation for the opening day lineup while Singleton is not. Come April, which one makes the opening day roster, if any?
What kind of numbers, 5x5 format, would you expect from Pinto if he can catch around 125 games?
Paul - Would be interested to see the same list in a keeper draft format, is that possible?
Where do you pick? If you are also giving 2 1st rounders back in this deal, it might not be worth it, imo.
Mike - Keep 'em coming. What do you think about Scooter Gennett for next year? Does he get a chance with Weeks coming back? Seems it's hard to ignore how good he's been. Similarly, Darrin Ruf able to secure the RF job next year if Howard is back?
Vargas - Any similarities to Ortiz? Is there enough bat to carry him as a 1Bman?
Johnson's been tearing it up. How much is it that he's a bit old for the league versus real development?
Zach - Have you had an opportunity to see Micah Johnson with the White Sox? How is his speed compared to Quinn. Does he have a good chance to stick at 2B?
Great news on Villanueva. If the bat can not play at 3b, does he have enough range to handle 2B?
Any reports on Anthony Ranaudo? His stat line looks awfully impressive and reports are that the velocity has increased.
Zach - What are the impressions from camp on Leonys Martin so far? Think he will lock down the starting role and run with it?
Jason - Was not meant as a knock, from my end it was a compliment. Many of us are relying on your great work and prospect analysis. For me, it's one of the main reasons I subscribe. Keep up the great work!
Sanchez sounds similar to Wilin Rosario, would that be a best case outcome?
At this stage in their development, what do your collective guts tell you about Guzman and Mazara and long-term if you could just have one who would it be?
Bradley - A bit surprised on the comment about Paxton. He was 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 11 starts after returning from his knee injury, which had bothered him (and his command). Obviously this affected his poor performance before being put on the DL. He was dominant in the playoffs and now continuing in the AFL in a hitting environment. His developing change-up is the pitch to watch, but Paxton said it got considerably better as the year went on, which would appear to coincide with his better 2nd half performance.
Bradley - We know the AZL park factors very much favor hitters, much like those in the PCL and CAL. Is there a way to put the Carib. League environments into perspective, do they favor hitters/pitchers? It will provide some context too, I believe. Thanks for keeping the prospect-y goodness during the long off-season.
Jason - Really enjoyed the write-ups. On Eaton, the PCL has a way of inflating hitting numbers. What kind of average/power/speed do you expect from him moving forward. Is Shin Soo Choo or Alejandra De AZa a decent offensive comp.?
Speaking of pitchers, what about James Paxton's dominant performance?
Is the move of Castellanos to RF long-term, or do you think he eventually moves back to 3B?
Chris - That description of Buxton reminds me strikingly of the conversations about Hicks. Who do you think ends up the better MLB'er? Thanks
yes, woulld appreciate that too.
Scary to think that Vogelbach may have hit 30hr's as a 19yr old had he played a full season.
For all contributors to the piece - Right now, if you had to build your team around one of the above, who would it be and why?
Good read Hudson. I enjoyed learning about this relatively unkwown prospect. I will keeping an eye out for him. Look forward to reading this series.
Jason - While I was disappointed (selfishly) by Kevin's departure, I think everyone here recognizes your unique writing and perspective on prospects. I'm sure you will thrive in this role and I continue to look forward to your work.
Also, are you moving to Texas from Dekalb? If so, does that mean you are trading the fedora for a 10 gallon hat?
Sorry. I didn't realize that it would change for format.
that should be 'more' happy for you. Yikes.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO [...] OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO [...] OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO [...] OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO [...] OOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Say it ain't so, Joe(Kevin)!?
Kevin - I've followed you here for a LONG time and I can't be happy for you. Your hard work has paid off and you deserve this. I wish you every success.
Don't forget us little guys. AND now can return as a (semi-regular)'Guest' of the Podcast, instead of host.
Assuming Hamilton doesn't re-sign, think the Rangers will give Martin the first chance to grab the CF job?
The numbers for Vogelbach are crazy good, but they have to be for him to make it, right? Just how difficult will it be to rank him?
Very bullish on Walker as #2 ranked SP prospect. What sets him apart?
Without giving away rankings, how many '12s would fit into your top 25 and who would you rate the highest?
Castellanos went yard again but still playing RF. What is the rationale to moving him to RF when he is a better defender at 3rd than Cabrera?
Jason - For you is Castellanos a future RF'er? Should we read much into the fact that the Tigers are giving him reps there?
Doug - Really great and informative write-up and look forward to more.
Also, love watching that Profar HR. He really turned on that ball on the inside half, didn't he?
KG - Is Cowart getting close to being in the conversation with Castellanos and Arenado as best minor league third base prospect?
On Profar's future power grade, and in general, how much do park factors also have to be taken in? I mean if he plays half his games in Texas, 10-15 could easily be 20, or is that not a fair statement?
Omission of Rymer Liriano grabbing an OF spot because he's not better than the guys listed or will be up in SD?
Nice to see some more balls going over the fence, but what do you make of Castellanos' K-rate so far? Any cause for concern in the swing, that he's being exposed?
With Castro firmly entrenched at SS, does Lake project for enough power to profile at 3B or do you see him playing another position?
Sorry that should read "California League".
KG - Disappointed that Billy Hamilton didn't get an HM for being robbed at gun point, then not only going out and playing in the game but winning the Carolina League All-star MVP.
KG - On Sanchez, does he have enough defense to profile at 3B, or are we looking at a future LF/1B if he's moved off the position?
Adam Jones struggled in his first year of A-Ball.
In a battle of jeans, who do you prefer between Soler and Ronald Guzman?
Jason a bit OT, but still Cardinals related. What do you make of 20yr old Anthony Garcia? Seems to be flying under the radar at Quad Cities. You or KG spoken to anyone in MWL on him? Tks.
KG - Buxton sounds eerily familiar to Aaron Hicks' draft profile. I know you don't like comps, but are the skillsets similar at the same age?
KG - On Dickerson, the theory was looking at his home/road splits last year, that he was the benefactor of a tremendous home park for hitting. This year, in the CAL, I understand his home park is fairly neutral, all things considered for that league, but his power is seemingly on the road (in the more 'hitter friendly' enviornments). How much weight do you put into this when evaluating him as a prospect? Thanks.
Are the Twins shopping Span? Seems like Revere is ready, and has lead-off speed if he can get on at a decent clip.
Do you think Spang. has enough pop to hit 10-15hrs at the big league level?
As a Hanson owner, a single tear rolls down each eye.
On Guzman, is there any young bat that you've seen that you would say his power is comparable to? Sano?
It's not working for me either.
Davidson sounds kind of Mark Reynolds-esque?
Report that Cespedes has signed with the A's. Given that they don't appear to be ready to contend in that division over the next 3 years (his peak years), I'm not sure I get the signing.
Derek - What are your early thoughts of the closing situations (favorites) in Oakland and Houston? Thanks.
One factor for Stanton, I think, is age relative to experience. You can expect a younger player, like Stanton, to be exposed by the game's elite, whereas it might show something different for someone like Granderson (who is already in his prime) and hasn't been able to make adjustments against the game's best.
KG - If you separate the pitching prospects from hitting prospects in their system, would the Dodgers be vying for worst position prospects in MLB?
Just an observation, Glaus' transformation from that pic is certainly indicative of the 'roid era.
KG - At this point, would you say there's a better than or less than 50% chance that Hamilton sticks at SS? If there is a move, is it more probably they'll give him a shot at 2B before a move to the CF?
KG- Bustin' out the sim league reference, wow! Somebody's been doing their fantasy prep work over the off-season. :)
Corey - So for Posey's recovery, what do you think the long-term prognosis is for his ankle/leg?
Is the fracture sometimes not preferred versus a really bad sprain with torn ligaments? Meaning that the fracture can be repaired and heal with proper resting of the ankle, whereas the ligaments/tendons may cause on-going problems?
If Blake doesn't make the team out of ST, who starts at third? Think Cuddyer gets a look there?
Another reason to be skeptical of Cabrera, take a look at the 1H v. 2H splits.
KG - From the 10, who's the one guy for you that you most expect will rebound/breakout in '12?
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you at BP. May 2012 be happy, healthy and prosperous for you all.
KG - Who do you prefer Parker or Cole?
WaldonSC - You are obviously new around here, Kevin's not Jewish.
Runs and RBI's are pretty difficult to gauge, imo. I was presuming he hits 5th, so I put the runs down slightly because he's moving to the NL so you are looking at a weaker 6 to 9 behind him. I am hoping that's a realistic performance, he could certainly outperform that line, but Cuddyer's had some poor years recently as well. I will be targeting him in my draft as a late-round sleeper.
KG - Thinking outside the box, nicely done. Merry Christmas to you and yours and looking forward to a great '12 at BP's.
Michael - What are your thoughts on Cuddyer, now that he's with the Rox? In most formats he will qualify for 2B and should hit 5th in the lineup behind Cargo and Tulo. Think his overall numbers, could look something like 75/25/85/10 .275-.285? If so, I think that vaults him up the list of fantasy 2Bman.
Derek - Keep 'em coming, these are great.
Do you think the signing of Willingham have any affect on Chris Parmelee's playing time? They now have Doumit, Mauer, Morneau and Willingham to share 1B/DH duties, when they are not assuming their regular positions. I thought Parmelee may get 400+ AB's, especially with Morneau's injury history, but with these signings I'm not so sure. Thoughts?
"He is real, very real" by Peter Gammons.
I sure hope so, I'd be quite disappointed if I've been watching video of a pretend person.
Also, I hope that is his real name, and age.
It's the NL, he's a valuable pinch hitter.
Keep using it, what do you mean? I used it once.
Don't mind the $10 million part, but don't like the three year term. Unfortunately he was being offered three year deals, so the Rox, I guess did what they had to do. I would've preferred a two year deal, maybe for a bit more per year, say two years $23 million. Because Cuddyer, with his ability to play OF, 1B, 3B, and 2B (adequately) gives them a lot of flexibility and is pretty valuable in the short term. Especially if they don't want to rush Arenado, they can plug him in at 3B, or 2B once and awhile. Helton also needs to be rested frequently and is often injured so there is another reason it was a good move, at least for the next year, or possibly two.
Jason - Is there any consensus that Hamilton may add some strength, either as he matures physically or through off-season workouts? Are the Reds trying to address this? I realize that every body type is different and adding some muscle may reduce some of his speed, but I would think they would sacrifice some of the 80 speed, for say 65-70, if it meant that he'd make more hard contact and hit for a better average, or would that be a poor decision?
Offensively does Liriano compare to Carlos Gonzalez?
Jay - I just wanted to pass along thanks for this coverage. As far as I'm concerned, some degree of the truth will eventually come out through this process and everyone will be able to take from it what they want. Until then, I'm with you that people should exercise pre-caution in coming to foregone conclusions about guilt, or innocense for that matter, without allowing the process to take it's course.
We get it Richard, we get ittttttttttttttt!!!!
Considering that MLB players are 0-12 on appeal, if he wins his, I think he is vindicated. At least he will be for me. Of course there are always doubters and conspiracy therorist, but I am hopeful that vindication sentiment will resonate with most.
Makes me wonder who were some of the other names that were never (yet) leaked.
Jay - Thanks for these updates.
I'm curious, if he's twice as high as the highest ever test in MLB how much of a testerone substance would one have to take? I mean, does this make much sense, at all? You would have to be some kind of absolute moron to think you could take that high an amount and get away with it. To some extent that makes me think that either the test is wrong or there is some other explanation to vindicate him.
Everyone is already rushing to judge the guy as guilty. Let's let the process take it's course before running around saying MLB should strip him of the MVP and enforce the suspension. There already are things coming out that are throwing doubt into the accuracy of the first test.
This is really good stuff, and potentially important too, thanks for sharing.
Well that's refreshing. I've been getting pretty tired with the Rabbi and Catholic Priest jokes.
Great works gents, have a new appreciation for these injuries and what it means for the players who sustain them.
do you anticipated Benefacio will bat 2nd?
Also is there a mild gain for Stanton?
Thoughts on Addison Reed assuming the closer's role?
Derek - What's your take on the Reyes signing for Benefacio? Presumably Ramirez moves to third and Benefacio to CF. In terms of his spot in the lineup, it previously looked like 1. Benefacio 2. Infante 3. Hanley 4. Stanton
Does Benefacio now supplant Infante in the 2 hole, or do you think he is going to move down to the 7 or 8 hole? This would certainly affect his value, imo. Thoughts.
Tommy Hanson - which of the above applies to him? Are you worried?
Any news on how Howard's recovery is proceeding and his likely return date?
It is the Bizarro World we even have Jerry as the GM!
KG - On Golden, did the people you spoke with see his tools start to play this year? Has he moved from very very raw, to very raw, or better? Thanks.
Thanks Jason. Points taken. Enjoy the series, keep up the great work.
Forgot to include Arizona (Chase), #10 hitter friendly park, which is a similarily hot and sunny climate.
But I think saying that the roof will be closed for mid-May to the end of the season is being pretty presumptuous. Houston, Toronto and Milwaukee, all domed, were ranked 6, 7 and 11 respectively in terms of hitting friendly parks.
Besides, Miami ranked #18, in terms of park factors, last season and was 'open' all year. It didn't seem to affect Stanton. Even if it's closed from mid-May onwards, is there any empirical evidence to suggest that his HR total will decline in the domed enviroment?
All I'm saying is I'm not sure it's fair to lower his draft position, much if at all, based on that assumption.
Regarding Stanton and the Marlins new ballpark dimensions, I think you better go back and have a look for comparison sake.
Stanton a pull-heavy righthanded hitter dealt with the following in Pro Player Stadium (versus the new dimensions in brackets).
Left Field Line - 330 feet (now 340 feet)
Left Centre Power Alley - 385 (now 384 feet)
Deep Centre Alley - 434 (now "Bermuda Triangle" 420 feet)
Centre - 404 (now 416 feet)
It strikes me as being only marginally different down the far left field line. If anything it 's more advantageous to Left Centre and into the Bermuda Triangle. What am I missing?
These are my thoughts also. Good luck Jason, though I do not think it will take long before you are scooped up. Just be sure if you go incognito that you come back to BP weekly and write under an alias.
Who knew Christopher Cross was such a hit in Cuba!?
Offensively speaking, does Pimentel have a ceiling/profile similar to Mike Stanton (or more average, less power)?
KG - Any progress being reported about Hicks from your AFL sources? Seems like he's showing some tools of late.
Will Allen Craig get a chance to play every day? He seems primed to be a really good bat in LF, plus he can play a bit of 2B too.
Aaron Hicks seems to be coming out from his early struggles. Any positives?
Michael, another thought too for Cuddyer, he might be a good fit in Philly. He has the ability to play 2B, 1B, OF and adequate at 3B, with Polanco likely on the outs, a gimpy Utley at 2B and concerns as to when Howard may be back, I could see him making sense there too. From a fantasy perspective it would also be intriguing.
Michael - I know it's probably wait and see on Cuddyer because he's a UFA, but he did put up good numbers in Minny this year and qualifies for 2nd in most leagues. Reports of the Rockies being very interested could make his fantasy stock soar. What do you think?
Also, Jason Heyward had an MRI on his shoulder last Thursday, but have yet to hear a report on it. Anything on this?
Corey - On Howard, how much more significant, if any, is the fact that the injury is to Howard's left achilles? Obvsiously as a left-handed hitter the power generated in his swing comes from the back (left) leg. I would be interested in a further report, at some point if you could, as to how this type of injury may affect his torque/power/swing even when he returns. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy this series.
Well, Bill. You do realize that addressing it in someone else's header doesn't make it his own. Arguably Buckner is (emphasis added) the #1 player who's career was defined (emphasis added) by a post-season moment.
Where do they play Prado then?
Thoughts on moving Santos for another SP or bat and put Reed in the closer's role?
Jason - On Paxton, mid-rotation more floor than ceiling? Being a lefty with that kind of velocity, if the secondary pitches continue to develop is there not a higher ceiling?
Did you have a chance to see Rymer Liriano? Impressions?
Thanks Derek. Also, another guy in the SD mix might be Josh Spence.
Is Santos signed with CWS next year? Thoughts on Addison Reed maybe stealing the job at some point next year?
Damn. I thought the article was going to compare Red Sox v. Rangers prospects. Always enjoyable Jason, but looking forward to your next prospects write-up.
KG - You didn't give us who you like at 3rd base (or do you concur with Rendon), if not who is the closest to him?
Jason/KG - A quick synopsis of Pimentel. You guys spoke about Harper, then got into the discussion re: Martin v. Brown and forgot about LF. Besides his 80 power, what else does he offer? Hit tool = ?
Hamilton - besides the speed, the bat also really seems to have wakened up. What do you/scouts make of the dramatic change from his 1H to 2H performance?
Does Pimentel scratch the top 30 on your personal prospect list?
Derek - Interesting article. Maybe this one you can re-visit come ST time, when 'new' managers for '12 are in place for forecasting purposes? Thoughts?
Very much enjoyed this series. Can you give a taste of Vettleson and Rodriguez's upside with the bat. Power/Hit/Speed tools? Tks.
KG - How would you like your crow served?
Still a few days away, but thoughts if the Jays don't sign Beede? Big plate of crow on the menu?
What do you see as Lindsey ceiling for his hit/power tools?
Cleary you haven't figured out anything. He didn't get the wrong player, get over it!
What's held Robinson back from a big league call-up?
KG - A lot of higly regarded/priced IFA's making their state-side debuts (Alfaro/Ovando/Castillo, etc.), from what you're hearing who is leading the class?
Better bat: Sale or Vettleson?
Awesome work Jason. Have really enjoyed this series. On Pimentel, he's also starting to show some plate discipline as the season progresses (see last 15 games or so). If he can show a bit more discipline, what kind of hit tool would you put on him. Enough for .275-.285 (more/less)?
Gary Sanchez 3-5 Hr (11). Power seems to be showing fairly nicely for an 18yr old catcher in the SAL, but any improvement in the def.?
Any chance Benson gets a look this year if the Twins are sellers, or too pre-mature, either due to the knee and not enough ab's or just not ready (or both)?
for the above sorry - 'than 2-3'
At this point, if he can put it together is Scarpeta more 4-5 and 2-3?
Jason - when's your next chat session?
Michael - Ryan Doumit's about to head out on a rehab assignment, was looking decent before getting injured. Thoughts?
Also from what you hear/seen, who has the higher ceiling between Castillo, Pimentel and Pegeuro (Assuming he moves off SS)?
I agree with the above Jason, fantastic piece. Take note SG, I am renewing my subscription for content like this. :)
No need to rush him obviously, but does Profar get a sniff of High-A before year's end?
KG - Who did you like more coming out of the draft Skole, J. Sale or Vettleson?
who closes for the Mets?
More ceiling Heathcott or Williams?
KG - Side note, would love to see your top 10 risers at the break maybe for your next Monday 10 pack, or another post for the week? Keep up the great work!
What do you make of Sizemore? Obviously more valuable at 2b, fantasy wise, but he's showing a pretty good approach and some pop so far.
Catricala - Does he appear to have enough bat to start at 1B at the MLB level?
Pimentel - Ceiling of a first division, middle of the order bat? Also, do you prefer Pimentel or Duran?
Rosario or Arcia for you in terms of upside/ceiling?
No Jhoulys Chacin?
What's Sanchez's arsenal? Think his stuff will play at higher levels?
Pimentel's current in-game power, and ceiling?
If Profar projects 15-20hr's, what kind of power ceiling are we talking about for Machado?
When do you start to consider moving him to 3B? From what I remember many teams were viewing him also as a really solid positional player.
Jason - Any other converts you see in the near future making a move, say Billy Hamilton or Zack Cox (though most scouts I'm sure think he lacks the foot speed for the position). In what tier would they rank? Also may be a bit premature, but where do you think Odor would fit here?
Hey guys, any update on Stanton? thanks.
Paxton - Do you believe he's a better fit as an SP or power RP? Think he should be jumped to AA?
Corey/Ben - what's your take on Tommy Hanson's diagnosis?
Beating Billy Butler in a foot race is not a point I'd emphasizing in support of that argument.
With Moustakas graduated, where does Castellanos rank for you among third base prospects?
KG - What kind of hit tool and power tool would you lay on Kipnis for present/future?
Think Szczur is promoted next month? Are you becoming a believer?
Wheeler's been awesome. Sneaking into top 100 consideration?
Also, when are you up next for one of the BP chat sessions? I know there's a lot of writers but it seems like an eon ago. Other than KG, you are are only BPer that really covers prospects. Thanks and keep up the great work.
These are awesome! Which of the guys from the 'still packs the punch' category, is most likely to exceed your expectations and make a move into that upper echelon?
Sorry to clarify, was 'that guy' that everyone criticized the Cubs and rushed to judge the pick.
KG - Looking back at last year, I'd say Hayden Simpson was that guy. If your recent scouting report of Simpson holds true, safe to say he won't be in this column.
Who is the "one" from this year's draft you think we will look back in a couple years and say 'boy, the scouting staff really got it right, and we the collective, were wrong?
On Simmons, what kind of bat/power tool are we looking at in a best case scenario?
Love it. Thanks for doing it.
Michael - Speaking of Chris Nelson. A real nice game last night, double, triple and a deep flyout that may have gone out at Coors. He's always had strong numbers in the minors, but injuries have held him back. With a few good games, any thoughts about his role moving forward?
How does the Mets medical/training staff get away with mis-diagnosis again and again? Any hope that Davis will be back before July 1?
KG - Both Adams and Rizzotti's bats seem legit, though their defence may not be even adequate. Obviously Adams is blocked (maybe temporarily) by Pujols and Rizzotti is blocked by Howard? Any thoughts about the possibility of LF for either or is the dee that bad?
in fairness Biggio was a catcher, which might actually be a lateral type of move to 2nd base.
Not KG obviously, but Craig Biggio comes to mind.
KG, I know you weren't especially high Szczur coming into the year, any change based on what scouts may be saying?
Welcome Derek, look forward to reading your articles.
Marc - Good luck on your new adventures!
SG - For all the naysayers, BP continues to produce fantastic content. Keep up the great work.
For Posey, taking his timetable for this year aside, what do the ligament issues and these injuries mean long-term? Is this something that in 6 months, with healing time and physio, that he should rebound from?
Jarrod Parker's line last night was decent and his stats are looking a little better in May. The k's are down a bit. Do you think that's him taking something off his heat to try and compensate for his command? Anything from scouts on him recently?
Jason - When are you next up for one of the BP chat sessions?
KG - From who you've spoken to on Hicks of late, the walks are still there but is he starting to make improvements on recognizing which pitches to be aggressive and go after?
Jason - Have really enjoyed this series. Would you consider writing a piece after your hitter's series, with a follow-up of minor league pitchers/hitters that you feel are '70-80' potential under each head (maybe a top 5 most likely for each)?
Agreed. Cudos to you and Jason, it's been an awesome ride, I just hope it goes on and on!
Yazy Arbelo, hit one last night and another 2 dingers so far today. Is it age-relative to the league, or think he's legit?
Is there something that scouts have seen that may explain why Hamilton is struggling so much? Possible that it is mental, ie. he is taking his poor defensive start up to the plate with him, or vice-versa?
It was a joke and fairly good one, I thought. Keep up the great work BP.
I actually laughed out loud at Hannahan turning back into a pumpkin. That was awesome!
KG - Why do you think the D-Backs have not given Wily Mo the call-up? In a rebuilding year, there does not seem to be a downside to see whether or not there's anything to his start. What am I missing?
Thanks KG. Love prospecty goodness with the daily updates. Keep up the great work (and with Jason on the Podcast, very enjoyable).
Small sample but Machado seems to be showing more in-game power than expected at this stage. Are the scouting reports you're getting still suggesting average to above average power (initially 15-25, I think you had said)? Is that still consensus?
Perhaps he needs to meet Doobie, the player not the illegal substance, before he takes the field to calm him down.
Where's Simmons on the list for you of the Braves' plethora of shortstops?
KG - On Trout, I wouldn't read too much into the running game, it's been awfully wet and cold in the TL so far. I'm sure the org. is conscious of that.
Doobie must have heard you singing his praises, hit his 2nd bomb today for Hickory. Small sample, but surprised by the in-game power so far(5 doubles, Triple, 2hrs)?
How does Alberto's hit tool compare with Profar's?
Ho hum, just another day of hijinx and thievery in Brooklyn. That was awesome!
One word for Bud Selig and Jeff Loria - Shame!
Prefer Schoop or Olt so far?
Epic. Great piece Jason.
Enjoyed the article Professor! You and KG back on the Podcast this week?
geez, sorry about that didn't even see your comment regarding Castillo. That's exactly who I see also.
Jason - Keep up the great work, really enjoying the articles. Also readers should check out the new website: http://www.texasfarmreview.com/
Luis Castillo, the good years, a good comp for Hamilton's ceiling?
Regarding my comment above - "Well KG, if this baseball thing doesn't work out....". I'm a bit miffed why it was deemed inappropriate? In essence it was a compliment to the Haiku article, and a joke if he ever wanted to leave baseball that poetry was back-up.
Anyway, it was certainly NOT meant to be insulting or inappropriate, and I'm sorry if that's how some viewed it.
Well you know KG, if this baseball thing doesn't work out......
KG - Who are the 3 or 4 in the 50-100 range, that you think will have Trout-like or Moustakas-like rises?
Jason - Anyone who listens to the Podcasts appreciates your analysis. It's prospect goodness with a dose of reality, which in some cases is needed.
KG - For Hicks, what side of the fence are you on 10-15, or 20+?
Prado's also expected to see time at 3B, with Jones limited, and often injury prone. Can you run something of his stats v. 3bman?
KG - Offensively, does Profar have the upside of someone like Alexei Ramirez? Judgment call, in 2015 is Sardinas or Profar more likely to be at short, or is Andrus still there?
Professor, since you are an aficionado of all things Rangers, please also weigh in.
KG - I asked in the Cardinals thread but thought this might be a better area, since you spoke about their list on the Podcast. You've seen a lot of MWL games and spoken to a lot of scouts there. How would Miller compare to the other promising arms that have come through there in the last 5 years or so? What were the conversations about him versus say some of the other guys? Congrats to you and Jason on another great Podcast.
KG - As a guy who watches a lot of MWL games (shout out to Kane County), how impressive was Miller versus other top righthanders you've seen come through there in the past 5 years or so? Anyone that you'd liken him to body/mechanics wise?
Jason - Fight the good fight man. Get well.
Also, definitely if you guy have bio pics they should consist of Kevin with his beret and Jason with shortsleeves and scarf. Solid.
For you and from your sources, who will have the better bat: Castellanos or Kowart?
sorry, the above should read 5'10 to 6'0 (not 5'10 plus).
Have we gotten to a point where 6'0 is considered small for pitchers??? Seems like the 5'10 threshold keeps going up. What are your thoughts on passing over pitchers that are 5'10 plus?
KG - How would Simmons' skillset compare versus someone like Profar? Also does Gyorko remind you a bit of Jeff Cirillo, thoughts?
On Trout - In speaking with scouts, does he have the best chance of any minor leaguer to become a 30-30 guy? Better hitting Grady Sizemore, are you referring to his futre batting average and do you believe he's a guy that can hit .300+?
Love the prospect talk boys, love it! Great work on explaining the scouting too. One of the best podcasts to date.
What's Zach Lee's ceiling compared to say someone like Stetson Allie? Which do you prefer?
John - I very much enjoy the On the Beat columns and just wanted to say keep up the great work and very best to you and yours for the New Year.
On a side note, as mentioned above, I too am a fan of the scouting reports. In terms of the suggestions, I would highly recommmend a fantasy flavor added to the segment and possibly some minor league reports as well (to coincide with KG's Future Shock/Monday 10 Packs). Perhaps a player from his Monday 10 pack could be featured in one of your weekly On the Beat posts, a little greater in depth of what scouts are saying about the player!? Just a thought.
KG - Happy Holidays to you and yours. Hope your mom fills us in on the festivities on the Podcast next week!
Do you see Stanton having a Howard-esque career? Do you think he'll be able to hit for higher avg. (ie. .285+)?
KG - Flores is 3 stars? Not asking you to defend it but I think you will look back at this one and scratch your head. At 19yrs old, he is tearing it up in the Venezuelan League this winter against significantly older and experienced competition. Sample size, but he's been taking more walks as well, which I know has been one of your concerns with him.
I think I threw up a little in my mouth looking at this list.
KG - Can add the Indians Top 11 to the Podcast, when you return from FL next week?
KG - You guys forgot to talk about the Indians Top 11. Can you add that to this week's podcast.
Michael, on the Marlins, how do you think the loss of Uggla shakes up the batting order for next year? And how do you think it will affect the fantasy production of Ramirez, Stanton and Morrison (positively or negatively)?
Just in terms of numbers, is Kevin Youkilis a fair comp for Chisenhall's ceiling?
KG - The list was probably made before Espinosa's injured hamate in winter league action. While it won't affect his readiness for spring, any concern about how it will impact his bat next year?
KG - Just how close were the top 3, and is their order fairly interchangeable or is there a gap for you?
KG - As a .9er, a small request for the Podcast when discussing Future Shock. Since we receive the lists, which are awesome, is it possible to talk a little more about the guys you really struggled with (either in terms of placement, or guys left off that you really think could breakout, etc.)?
Cudos to you and Jason for all your hard work, keep 'em coming!
reply fail. this was to your post above regarding Heyward will play RF.
The point of the post was referring to John suggesting the Braves find a power bat to go with McCann and Jones without mentioning Heyard. I would've thought Jones is more an after thought at this point. Can they really count on him as an every day player?
Heyward. No mention of him in the middle of the lineup? I'd take him over Chipper any day. I think they should move on from Jones.
Missed that. That's exactly who Allie reminds me of.
Does Allie have some Jeremy Jeffress in him (stuff and velocity, not off-field issues)?
Great write-up. I can't believe how far this team has fallen from the Killer B days of Biggio, Bagwell and Berkman.
KG - would you and Jason consider doing an AFL segment next week? Some of the guys you've heard from scouts about that are either tearing it up (or really struggling). As always, really enjoyed tonight's Podcast, especially the heated conversation re: Josh Hamilton and religion. It was also a really good point on someone like Nelson Cruz, I never really thought of it that way.
KG - Without going into too much depth, is Norris still a top 50 prospect for you?
Right, you are in NY! Sorry 'bout that.
Would love to hear some expansion on some standouts (good or bad) from what you are hearing on guys in the AFL so far.
KG - What's the status of this week's Podcast? Wed's are not the same without you and the professor.
Are you expecting rebounds from Markakis and Wieters?
Ken - Parker's rehab is going exceptionally well. His velocity has returned and he's added a 2-seamer. If he regains his command quickly in Double A, he may be up sooner than you think.
Also a report that Kelly's fastball touched 95, and sat between 92-94. Seems like a bit of a spike in velocity this year, is that what you are hearing?
KG - Hear on anything on Banuelos' start last night? Stat line wasn't very stellar and he only last 2 innings.
Dinner conversation for next week: Players you're watching in the AFL.
Sweet. Keep 'em coming!
KG - Is there a Podcast today?
KG - Future third baseman for you, Davidson or Borchering?
Think Derek Norris rebounds next year at AA?
KG - Love you and Jason on the podcasts, would love to see more minor league content. Keep up the great work.
Scouts Views - John very much enjoyed this addition to On The Beat, and hope they continue. Keep up the good work.
Kimbrel is next season's Feliz. Bank it! ;)
Can't wait. Have been following you and Jason on the Podcasts, so any prospecting on there is HIGHLY valuable and would encourage more, lol. For anyone who hasn't been listening to the podcasts, i'd highly recommend.
KG - When can we expect you to do a BP chat session? Enjoy everyone's contributions but no one outside of you really does prospects. Thanks, keep up the great work.
Kipnis was also dominant in the playoffs. KG - It would appear he doesn't need a full season in the minors, so if Phelps struggles early, do you think they'd turn to Kipnis by June or so?
Mike - A few weeks back you put Venters ahead of Kimbrel for the '11 closers job in Atlanta. Do you think Kimbrel's narrowed or surpassed him? He's looked awfully good, more importantly with his command, these last few weeks. Thoughts?
KG - Your lists and content are the main reason I subscribe, I'm really looking forward to them. Maybe a category such as Tools, where you/scouts rate what they are now (ie. the grade you'd give), and what you/scouts expect them to grade out as in the future.
Also, Hamilton was very impressive this year. The speed is real, but do you think the bat is?
KG - How does Profar's bat profile long-term, especially if there is any power to project?
KG - On Hicks - While we've seen Moustakas and Hosmer bounce back from very sub par years to burst onto the prospect radar, do you have a feel if this will happen for Hicks? Or for you is what you see what you get, lots of tools but just likely not able to really tap into them?
Mike - Who do you think takes over the Braves closer next season, Venters, Kimbrel, or FA?
Kipnis or Ackley for you?
sorry that's 4 straight 30hr seasons.
Jay - I'd like to hear your thoughts on the underated Dan Uggla. I know the Marlins are out, but he's had one fantastic year. First 2nd baseman EVER to hit 30HR's or more in a year. His BA is a respectable .280 and he is going to push for 90 runs and 100RBI's at a much more premium position. Thanks.
KG - looks like the fandom has spoken and we'll need you going to more minor league games. Hopefully the food and beer are on the house!
Excellent report. I know you don't like comparisons, but body-wise aside, does his pure stuff remind you of anyone you've seen?
Will - Thoughts on Miguel Cabrera's bicep tendonitis. Is this something that may shut him down?
What have been the reports on Davidson's glove? With all the first base types (including Goldschmidt, Borchering and potentially Krauss), does Davidson have enough glove to stick at 3rd?
Will - Been following you for a long-time, and hope that things at BP get ironed out. Congratulations on #1000, I don't think any of us truly know the hard work and dedication (not to mention the number of phone calls) it takes to get there.
Where does Profar rate with other big IFA guys like Sanchez and Sano?
Awesome, enjoy it KG!
If picking right now, who would you take between Sanchez and Sano?
If you are the Indians do you move Santana over to first base in the spring?
Flores - That's pretty harsh. I'm curious, are there any 18yr olds you'd consider top of the line, especially in High A? Does the walk rate concern you that much, considering what Beltran recently said about the poise, maturity and work ethic of this kid? I would think if he's 21 and still failing to take a walk it's an issue, but to do so when he's 18 in High A suggests that you do not believe he can adapt and learn how to work counts in his favour.
Which two from the list do you think goes on to the best MLB career?
KG - I think I speak on behalf of most that the minor league content you deliver is second to none. It keeps me coming back to BP daily.
Further to the convo with the scout, the power seems to be showing now it's a question of ceiling. Did you get any indication of what we are talking for power potential, ie. 25-30, 30-35 or 35+ HR's in his prime?
Sorry, just hadn't seen anything in the past couple weeks on here and he may or may not be going on a rehab assignment. Pretty important for the Rox.
Will - What's the status of Tulo, haven't seen anything on him in the UTK lately, relying on you. Thanks!
Miller had given up only 4 hits, 1bb and only 1 run thru 4 while striking out 8. Think the final line was as they were trying to stretch him.
Is it time to start to think of Beachy as some kind of prospect? He's 24, any outside shot he gets a call-up in September?
He actually reminds me a lot of Tim Hudson.
Was expecting a breakout from Joseph, is he having problem with off-speed stuff?
Any update on Tulo?
Will you have a feature from last night's Futures Game? Would really love to hear your thoughts and impressions. Keep up the great work KG!
Does Gary Sanchez change that though process at all? Seems like Romine and Sanchez provide a substantial amount of depth at catching in the system.
Does Bryce Harper become a top 5 (or higher) for you once signed?
KG - Is Dan Uggla a decent comp, both with the glove and bat, to Lawrie?
KG - Anything on Casey Kelly?
I'm with the rest KG, keep it comin'.
Any spring scouting reports (comments) on Kalish or Kelly?
We'd love to see you up North in Toronto too!
KG, how did Hosmer look last night?
After the lists are complete, perhaps an \'All prospect Team\' with a Team 1 (the creme of the crop) and Team 2, including a regular at every position, DH, 5 starters, a closer, and then the same for your second team. Great Work.
