Great work. Only comment is that I would love to see more "triple slash" lines worked in for the minor leaguers... It's a useful quick and dirty way to for me to have a larger snapshot of some of these players beyond just noteworthy day, streak etc. Thanks!

Just realized that Kyler Burke was converted into a pitcher.... Probably nothing exciting, but it there anything at all worth mentioning about the move?

I've been wondering about the Breakout/Improve/Collapse percentages as well this year... Always a favorite interest of mine, but they don't seem to make much sense this year... At the very least, they seem to be calculated much differently. Would love some help understanding this.

Your setting up a straw man. Waterboarding is torture too, but I'm not being tortured if I bump into the coffee table while drinking Mr. Pibb. And this kid wasn't tortured either. It just doesn't fit. You can debate the excessive force aspect, but please don't analogize it to torture. Was this kid doing something he shouldn't have been? Most definitely. Was he resisting arrest? Yes. Should he have been tased? Probably not either. My only argument with the above article is the assertion that "no effort was made to secure compliance with physical force". I would characterize the chasing as just that. The question is if and when enough is enough. It's quite easy to criticize law enforcement, and not very helpful either. Nor is comparison to other incidents. It is a fine line to try to figure out on the spot in front of 40,000 whether the age of someone and whether they present a threat. On the one hand, you have this incident, on the other, you have the Seles incident or that of the father and son assault on the KC first base coach of a couple years ago. The officer probably isn't thrilled right now at how it turned out either. But, I'll bet he'd feel worse if someone did get hurt by someone running on the field. Again, it's a fine line, and the ex post facto judging isn't as cut and dry as everyone wants it to be.

"So it was ugly, but it was a victory, thanks to Theriot, who had a talk with manager Lou Piniella last week in St. Louis about driving the ball. "I told myself before that to try to drive something in the gap and get runs in," Theriot said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-02-cubs-marlins-chicago-may02,0,3891084.story

Bill James Places Stairs in the "Hall of Could Have Been..." "Look at it. Somebody decided he was a second baseman, he tears through the minor leagues, gets to Montreal, the Expos take one look at him and say, 'He's no second baseman, get real.' He bounces around, goes to Japan, doesn't really get to play until he's almost 30, then hits 38 homers, slips into a part-time role and hits 15-20 homers every year for 10 years in about 250 at-bats a season. ... You put him in the right park, right position early in his career ... he's going to hit a LOT of bombs." http://thesoulofbaseball.blogspot.com/2007/04/hall-of-could-have-been.html

Kevin- I'm thinking about stopping by the Kane county flea market before catching Peoria v. Kane County this weekend.... Any advice or suggestions for either? Possibly a good place to grab a lunch in the area?

On a side note, is this story getting too much play in the MSM? What am I missing? Did we not learn last winter that Peavy is likely to be picky in any destination? I woke up this morning to reports that this was essentially a done deal. I didn't believe it then, and it seems there has been a slow back-peddling all day. I fully expect to turn on the TV in another hour to find Tim Kurkijan say "Psyche! We knew all along this wouldn't happen!"

What happened to: C) Don't necessarily trade gonzalez immediately, but look to do so when the right deal comes along. All this reference to his salary indicates the belief that the padres can certainly afford his contract, but at the same time, joe has a point that its fairly futile to trade peavy and keep gonz... Don't force a deal though just cause you've traded one of them... You have the life of that inexpensive contract to do it. Wait til someone knocks on your door with a bedardesque package. Otherwise, sit back in your GM box and watch him hit dingers. Cause who doesn't like dingers?

I have to say I support the specific stat usage. I was once in a similar position, but trust me, after time, the writers usage of them drill home an understanding, and it is worth it in the end. If BP has as a goal the point of providing advanced statistical methods to provide more accurate and applicable data, then why not use stats more suited to this goal? Or, in other words, Why use a rock to mash a nail into a wall, when a hammer might be better suited to the job? Or, How I learned to stop worrying and love the SNLVAR.

I\'m pretty happy with sweet lou\'s use of the pen, aside from perhaps the overuse of some of his best pitchers... But then again, the whole point is to use your best players, and with the cubs not really a team built for years from now, go right ahead lou. I imagine its probably too late for gallardo to come back and fill up at the very least some meaningful bullpen innings, but his presence could have really helped them out, both in the rotation, and the kick back effect it could have had in bumping someone back to the bullpen, and someone else to their seat. Also, agreed that Ozzie has sensible pen usage, and the quotes on it in the recent article and \'the week in quotes\' are pretty interesting.

At least you never had to suffer through my early nineties childhood.... A Bret Boone in every pack. The good people at Topps, Donruss, Fleer, et al. so ingrained him into the American Psyche that you really can\'t help blame so many GM\'s for giving him shot after shot after shot. Of course, I was fortunate enough to have the allure of a stick of gum as an excuse for my Boone-dabbling.

ESPN always seems quick to bail on baseball once football comes around... I was looking for to a labor day game.
