How about a gay, former DH, robot commissioner??
I agree very much with what tballgame said, and would add that it is extremely important to include Gonzalez's recent statement that his shoulder is not what it was and that he does not expect to get his full power back. Paying $20+ Million / season for a power hitting first baseman is one thing, but to pay that for one with decreasing power is another.
Stupid question alert: Why is it you go with team nicknames for each player except for Nick Williams, who is in the "Texas" system? There aren't two Ranger teams. I mean, this isn't the CFL here...
Smokey Joe Wood, all the way. He's a great story too, coming back as an Outfielder, and a damn fine one at that.
Grant Green @ 5? Wow, and he's only four years older than Mike Trout.....
His nickname is "Kike". Wow...
Actually, it is in the Commissioner's power to force Loria to sell the team under the "better interest of baseball" concept. I think MLB would be very well served, particularly at this point in time, to save the Miami market, to force Loria out.
The problem is, how can the Commissioner approve the trade but then force out one of the participants in that trade? Wee bit of a conundrum that.
Bobby Cox has been contacted by the Jays. THAT would be interesting. I think Torre would be the best fit though.
Not sure where else to post this, but the site is looking like crap right now...
You're joking, right? You do realize that there is no such thing as the Cardinal way, or the Yankee way, or any such nonsense. The Cardinals, like ANY MLB team, will play the best player available 99% of the time (I'm looking at you Royals / Francouer). Ankrom looks at prospects and attempts to ascertain when they will be ready for the MLB team. For goodness sake, it's not like Wong would be replacing Robinson Cano!!!!
Kevin, something you didn't mention was ball size (I mean baseball size!). I know Daisuke had issues with the larger US ball; is that something that is seen as less of an issue for the larger-in-physical-stature Darvish?
Awesome article Jason. Really find Bethancourt intriguing. Is there a comp you can apply to him, i.e. a player who at the same age was close to what he is now?
How the hell do you name your kid Igor Jr. when your name isn't actually Igor??? WAFI.
dodgerken222, a little perspective dude. Of course the family of Ramos didn't care about the listing of the story on the MLB app. And I'm sure as the Freedom Riders were being beaten they weren't thinking at that moment "Gee, it's a shame that it says "Whites Only" on that water fountain over there."
And your Lady Gaga analogue? Way off base. There are, what, millions of "entertainers" out there; there are less than 1000 MLB players. If this even happened to a Pittsburgh Pirate, for goodness sake, it should be top news.
No one is whining. When a society chooses to ignore obvious racial, social, sexual, political or other discriminations, that's when society has lost its way. I feel sorry for you that you find it necessary lower the standard of discourse, to state people are "whining" when all we are trying to do is bring the standard of discourse up.
Incidentally, you are the perfect example of the kind of intollerence you are tired of hearing about! In fact, I have to add that I'm tired of all those yokels whining about the whining!
I am honestly shocked and disheartened by this news, but also by the lack of urgency, for lack of a better word, placed on it in the news in general but particularly by MLB.
For example, when I first heard of the kidnapping, I immediately went to my MLB app on my iPhone. Under "News", it was THIRD on the list, after a blurb about Matt Kemp and, amazingly, about Mike Maddux bringing humour to the job interview.
Imagine if Dustin Pedroia or Derek Jeter or hey, Matt Kemp had been kidnapped. The 24 hour news cycle would have hit the jackpot! But no, it's a rookie from Venezuela - allbeit incredibly talented with a very promising future - and I can't help but feel that as a non-American, few in the American mainstream care.
And that in itself is a travesty.
Money quote from ttomae8833: "The proof is in watching the two play and comparing them relative to each other."
First off, you sound like a scout. Second, did you actually watch every play made by both Cano and Ped this season?
Then we can get into all the other great stuff: "2011 was a down year for Cano in the field for sure" and "Cano is becoming one of the best players in the game right now".
No, 2011 wasn't a down year for Cano; he's generally been an average fielder at best. Ped has been stellar for many years and 2011 may have been his best all around season. And let's not forget, Ped already has an MVP to his name, meaning he is not becoming great, but is already great.
And I'm not from anywhere near New England.
I said it before, I'll say it again: 133 pitches for Verlander tonight; are you FUCKING KIDDING ME???
133 pitches for Verlander tonight. Are you fucking kidding me???
Wow, Snider with 4-5 with 2K... This guy can do the unbelievable in AAA.
Hi Ken and thanks for the response. I have to say then that FRAA and pitcher batting stats are waited far too heavily in the WARP calculations. I mean there is so little impact or effect on a game from pitcher hitting/ fielding, it seems rather odd, doesn't it?
THANK YOU!! I was thinking the exact same thing. Looking at the data, how can Halladay have a lower WARP than Stouffer or Bumgarner?? It makes NO sense to me; Halladay pitches in a tougher park yet has WAY better peripherals (SIERA, WHIP, not to mention doing that in 30% more IP).
Can someone please explain this??? I want to, and to some degree have, embraced the "new" stats, but these numbers don't pass the smell test.
With Philip Seymour Hoffman also? Wow, I'm there man.
Question: With the potential, allbeit unlikely, that there could be a hard cap in place for next season's draft, would it make it more likely that teams will be more aggressive THIS draft, knowing next year they may have substantially more control over signing bonuses??
Funny... Padilla used to BE a pain in the neck...
Yes, but the Sox have no idea as to how long Aceves or Wakefield's back holds up. Slowey isn't better than them, but he is better than what the have at AAA, or at least was until the Twons put him on the DL.
Is it just me, or does Slowey to the Red Sox for some flotsam and perhaps a bit of jetsum make too much sense??
With "Bee" being a somehwhat unusual last name, I have to ask if you're any relation to Samantha Bee, superstar?
"Though barely 10" when standing fully erect"... When did the guys from South Park start writing headlines for BP?
Are you any relation to Samantha Bee? Just curious...
Impressive, deep, thoughtful. Thank you.
Not sure, but why does it state in last paragraph that Pujols has 398 homers when he has 408?
"primitiveness conditioning" = EPIC FAIL. I volunteer to proof the articles for you guys.
Well over two hundred comments and counting. I'd say that this article did what it was meant to do, what I imagine EVERY article published on this site is supposed to do, and that is create dialogue and discussion. Bravo.
juiced, are you saying the tie go to the established player? Why is that fair? Votto has the talent and minor league pedigree to show this is likely NOT a one-year-wonder thing. Don't you think, if we're looking for "tie breakers", Cincinnati winning the division should be the most logical?
Nice to see Carlos Perez get the "Goldstein Bump"!!
LOVED the Princess Bride reference, very very nice.
This is awesome, I love this retro stuff going on at BP (Dead Ballplayer OTD also). Please keep it coming!
Great story, thanks for posting it.
"I thought he was just excited to have survived his brain operation without needing a diaper."
Perhaps I'm not getting it, but seems like an incredibly callous comment Steven...
Love these articles, please keep 'em coming!
Christina, just wondering: in a situation where Turnbow injures himself while performing as a member of the Marlins, are they on the line to pick up the surgery costs (if he were to undergo TJ for example) since they were his employer at the time of injury, or does releasing him (I believe he was an NRI) eliminate their responsibility?
The MLB slash stats you showed for Desmond are wrong; your site shows .280/.318/.561, the difference of course being the OBP, which makes a HUGE difference on how one would see his potential. You may wish to correct this.
Question: How can anything, including a prospect, be "extremely unique"? Just wondering...
WTF? That the Cubs are even CONSIDERING a package for A RELIEVER while including Soto, well, someone should be shackled in a closet to make sure that DOES NOT HAPPEN. Have GM's really learned NOTHING???
Why is Hicks wearing a BRS helmet in the photo on the main page??
About #5: Someone should have told that to Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro BEFORE he traded Cliff Lee to Philly.....
Funniest GD thing I've read on this site!
I think your post is the most relevant one here. This isn't about us, it's about how much this will affect kids out there. Not that they'll see Manny doing it and choose to do so also (although that may be the case for some), it's that kids like jimnabby's kids will begin to hate the entire sport because of being "let down" by clowns like Manny.
"... with a blindfold and a bullet wound." Love it!
Regarding the Matt Antonelli injury: this raises a question I have always had mulling in my head. What exactly do cortisone shots do? From what I understand, they simply alleviate swelling (a result / symptom of an injury) but that is all. The doctor in the article is quoted as saying that after his THIRD cortisone shot they think they got the problem. Is this actually possible? If it is only reducing the swelling, wouldn't the original injury still stand?
I hope you get a chance to respond to this.
thwalq3r, didn't you ever watch John "Way Back" Wasdin pitch?
Love the Strasburg comment! Still, they have far too many CO/1B types, even after releasing Wily Mo, and no pitching depth whatsoever. Further, if that "vaunted" (ahem) offence is counting on production from Nick Johnson, good luck with that.
Remember, at some point, you have to look at health as a skill, at least isn't that what Will Carro says?
The Nats ahead of the Marlins? That is the biggest surprise I see here. I have a great deal of difficulty believing that one... but in PECOTA we trust, right?
Great link, thanks! Pretty obvious that the right arm is raised just as high as the left one.
Will, any comments on that?? Is there a link YOU can send us to?
Derek Lee is a Green? Seriously??
Not nice calling Santana \"a behind\"...
I don\'t think this is correct; MLB has a blanket statement saying that it is against the rules to take ANY banned substance, whether it\'s cocaine or steroids or whatever. Therefore taking steroids, like using cocaine, should result in some sort of penalty (fine, suspension, fine & suspension).
If anyone knows for certain otherwise, I\'d like to hear it.
You seriously \"see no problems\" with cheating? I think that says more than anything I could add at this point.
All that, and I can\'t freakin\' believe I wrote \"where\" instead of \"wear\"!!!
So, if I cork my bat, but it gets confiscated, so I get my teammate to crawl through the vents to take it from a locked room, that\'s ok, no one got hurt and I\'m just trying to win.
Or perhaps the groundscrew wets over-waters the baselines bacause the hometeam has speed and likes to bunt, that\'s ok, no one got hurt and we\'re really just trying to win.
Or I use an emory board on the mound, or my catcher scuffs the ball before sending it back to me, or I have some vaseline on the inside of my cap, that\'s ok, no one got hurt and I\'m really just trying to win.
Or let\'s say I use a hidden camera in center field to steal my opponents signs, that\'s ok, no one got hurt and we\'re really just trying to win.
We have rules for a reason. You stop at red lights every day, but not because we want you to get to work late. You don\'t bring knives onto planes, but not because we don\'t want you to bag that sweet deal the machete guy on the beach was giving you.
For goodness sake, you where a condom, but not because she wants you to enjoy it less.
We are a society based on rules. If we allow players to use substances like steroids, then players will feel obligated to use them, because if they don\'t, they won\'t be \"really trying to win\". And then what happens when we realize that these drugs kill people? What then?
We have rules for a reason, not to make life more difficult for those who wish to take the easy route.
100% wholeheartedly agree with this statement. More Nippon yakyu!!
BTW, what in the world does this have to do with baseball???
Katz\'s deli in Toronto is miles ahead of Schwartz - only problem is the lines to get in are miles long at lunchtime.
The hanging sox are great, love the new roadies too.
\"two toned\"??? wtf??
Dodgers, 8/163, 12/8.
Dear God, if it\'s true that the Twins are offering Young for Kouz, how on earth can the Padres say no??? JUST DO IT!
100% keep Jackson; he\'s developed nicely the past two years and looks like, at a minimum, a solid #4. Sonnanstine is you\'re run-of-the-mill staff filler, easy to replace but coming off a season where his value has been maximized. If I\'m Friedman, I trade him NOW.
Sorry, make that RoY THREE years ago... God I feel old.
Great to get reporting on hockey, but let\'s get things right: He was RoY two years ago, not last year. Last year he was runner up for the Hart.
I love it when people make comments like this; they remind me of those fools that yell and scream about those terrible shows on tv that are ruining their kids.
TURN THE FREAKIN\' CHANNEL IF YOU DON\'T LIKE IT!
Same goes here. Some people find the topic interesting, others don\'t. Peter, if ya don\'t like it, let it go. Leave it for the others to enjoy.
And what about \"wedge issues\"? Would DH or no DH count as one? And how could that be determined as left/right? For example, if I support the DH, is it left leaning (job creation in the vein of a government job and often for otherwise \"unemployable\" people) or right (creates elite jobs, very high paying ala wallstreet)? Or does even having an opinion show bias (opinion = gov\'t intervention, no opinion = free market)?
Is there, can there be, a political slant on the way the games are reported in the papers or on websites? How can we deduce this? And this can not include anything about stadium construction/funding as this is a political-only discussion, not a sports discussion, IMHO.
Here\'s an interesting thought exercise: Is there a left slant and right slant in baseball? That is, can the traditional political spectrum be superimposed on the game? And if it can, how does that affect our knowledge of it?
It should be mandated that he no longer be called Manny. His name is Money. For two reasons:
If you love him, it\'s because he\'s money when he\'s at the plate.
If you hate him, as I do now (yes, a Red Sox fan, you guessed it), it\'s because he\'s alllllll about the money.
