The Twins hitting a <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=HR" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('HR'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">HR</span></a> in each of the first 7 innings is pretty remarkable, but not something we need to know?
Great. Looking forward to the rest. Especially loved the Johnny Keane thread and the <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=18397">Dick Allen</a></span> thread. You've inspired me to look deeper into those stories.
No love for Buck and the Twins? Boo!!!
That's the evidence :<
The segment about Kim, which dismissed Williams, has disappeared.
Anyway, I see Kim is replacing Williams in the lineup today, so maybe somebody knew something.
I thought it odd that Williams was completely omitted from this story. I thought either Craig or the Phillies had completely lost their minds, if that's the rotation that they elected.
Well said. Someone in that organization needs to wise up before the next wave gets squandered.
Love <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70811">Ray Black</a></span>. His numbers are crazy.
Yep, another reason to read and watch baseball. You just never know for sure who's going to be great until it happens.
Re: Walker...it seems silly to keep reminding us that there's nothing to see here, while continuing to point him out. Why not do some work, and tell us why he keeps putting up numbers, despite his lack of tools. I believe you when you say it's a mirage, but I'm thirsty and it's getting hard to walk away from it.
I know you all think the Twins are a joke, but 18th is a bigger joke, and yes, I'm a homer.
Case in point.... <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=88160">Doug Fisher</a></span> sunk 80% of my play last night.
I preordered mine on Amazon months ago, and got it on Wednesday, the 28th
Is he a prospect with a chance to have a MLB career? He's been around forever, and is actually having a decent season, but I never hear him talked about.
"Expect Anna to be claimed by a team that puts emphasis on minor-league numbers. In other words, he should start packing for Cleveland."
This is why I love my BP writers. Who knew? Good job guys.
I was at the Iowa Cubs game on Monday. Great game...Bryant hit a grand slam that was a BOMB to put the Cubs up in the 8th. And Baez hit a rocket off the leftfield wall to set the Cubs up for the walk off win.
And oh yeah, Manny went 3 for 4, and hit a HR to right center that probably didn't get to more than 30-40 ft off the ground. It was a laser.
I've never heard of Carlos Asuaje, so I don't know if he's any kind of prospect, but if Gioloto turns into the beast he's projected to, that HR might be the highlight of his career. My son, who's 19, and a former high school player, still talks about the 2B he hit off of Logan Shore, who was drafted in 2013, and pitches for the University of Florida.
Follow up to above post. Mesoraco is my #1, and I don't have to necessarily have a backup, unless Mesoraco doesn't play for a week.
20 team mixed. Variation of head to head. Rivera, Doumit, Butera, Gimenez are probably the best of the FA.
Referencing your comment on Grandal, I feel the same way about his potential, but I've been sitting with him as my #2 catcher all year, and he continues to lose playing time to Rene Rivera. Is he hurt, are the Padres idiots? I'm ready to cut bait, but listing him here has made me question if I should hold him a little longer, but Rene Rivera?
So maybe Joe Maddon isn't a genius after all?
Funny...no response from JP
Does he have any trade value? Is it possible he could be moved somewhere that is willing to take a chance on him?
Agreed, I liked that.
Parks, your responses to fantasy questions crack me up. The analogy that comes to mind is that of an artist who is incensed that his wonderful nudes are being used as masturbatory material.
Anyway, nice work, even if you come across a little elitist.
I love games at both those ballparks. I live in Minneapolis, and my daughter goes to U of I in Iowa City, so I couldn't have been happier when the Twins moved into Cedar Rapids.
Wow, I'm surprised at this discussion. I assumed most of us know about guys at AA - AAA, and have access to almost everything there is to know about them. I am most interested in the lower level guys, that don't have much or anything written about them, just because there isn't much data about them. My focus is on who the short season and low A guys are that we will be reading about and looking at in high A and AA, in a year or 2. So my 2 cents is keep doing what you're doing Zach.
Yes. Really great. I will look forward to this every week.
I realize he's being mentioned because he had a couple good games, but is Stetson Allie a real 1B prospect, or is he here only because he is a name that people know?
Hey JP, No not a cafeteria, but it is open to comments, and as paying customers, can we not ask for what we want without snarky replys?
What does it say about Walker that the Mariners are willing to trade him? That really surprised me to see him in the discussion.
Social anxiety disorder is not "anti-social". This kind of misinformation and stigma is why people who struggle with mental illness stay in the closet and don't seek out treatment.
Nice...makes me want to make the trip.
Very nice, especially addressing the issue of stigma. The fact that these 2 players are the only ones out of 750 that we are talking about should tell people how large the problem of stigma is.
I wish you would have emphasized recovery a little bit more. People do recover from mental illness, just as they do other disease and illness. Emphasizing this could do wonders to reduce the stigma, as people begin to realize that with treatment, they can get better.
I wanna fist bump Sharky
I would argue that it is your fault, as that is your j-o-b. Keeping the readers interest.
You don't need to tell the readers this is the best you could do...the readers will tell you if it is.
As long as we throw the adulterers and homos out first.
Plus, plus, plus....
Pisses me off too, this is ridiculous.
Really good work. Makes me want to go.
Yes, the JP I can read appears. More analysis, less meta. Disappointed about the Santana comment, was hoping he could hit. Excited about the Bird comment.
Yes, that was some Stratomatic card.
Watching the last clip of Gibson (the view from, behind the plate), it seems that the flailing of his limbs would add to the batters inability to pick up the ball. I know this all about mechanics, but does that distraction help a pitcher too?
As a Twins fan, I've been following Kepler's development, and am starting to get excited. And as the father of a ballet dancer, I'm thrilled that my future grandson's can still be baseball players!
Because he's on my ridiculously deep strat team, I'm probably the only person rooting for this guy, other than his family, teammates, and Dodger fans. So Jason, I hope you're wrong, although I don't imagine you are.
Could Kepler be the mythical player Jason Parks was looking for?
Everything about this makes me green with envy.
This is awesome. Especially the Josh Harrison note. Thanks Sam.
Fair enough. That's what I figured, but had to ask. My response would be to ignore stupid questions. Any regular reader pretty much knows this is your answer.
I'm a bit confused, but if the start Gallo's having, and the underlying statistics are meaningless, why talk about them? To tell us they are meaningless? Are you lecturing professor?
KG, who are you lecturing? You know the owners don't read this, don't you?
All I can say is, this was cool.
And would you say the same for an individual with diabetes or heart disease who weren't able to always manage their illness properly, that "they bear all the responsibility for their fate"?
Where you go wrong here, kcboomer, is that there is not always "fault" to be had, that sometimes life deals bad shit to people. If Hamilton loses his fight to addiction, he's not at fault, and the same compassion that's shown to anyone who loses a fight to cancer, heart disease, etc., should be shown to his memory, and loved ones.
Loved your music selections. It reminded me of how my brother and I used to sit up every Sunday night and listen to "120 Minutes" on MTV to see what records we were going to buy the next day.
I look forward to your perspective. I'm a lifelong Twin Cities resident, and 10 time veteran of Twins Fest. My most prized baseball collectible is a autographed ball from the 1984 team that I gathered signatures for as a young man. A young Kirby, Gary Gaetti, Kent Hrbek, Frank Viola, Tom Brunansky...I so loved that team.
Dave Winfield, off the top of my head.
If FMart a prospect anymore? Will he get a chance now that they're not expected to win?
Yes, we in the Midwest object to Texas being included amongst us.
Great stuff Rob. Just uploaded my USBL team. Sure beats doing this by hand, which is what I've been doing for years.
I'm pretty sure he was a top 100 guys on this site before the season started.
I'll stay with the thought that most professional baseball analysts always seem to be wrong about the Twins, as the Twins ALWAYS seem to outperform expectations. Until the first half of this year, anyway. I'm not optimistic about their chances, but that's when they seem to prove me wrong.
I noticed in the Twins bullpen video that "Osterbrock" was catching bullpens. The Twins have a lefty (this bullpen catcher was left-handed) named Dan Osterbrock. Do other pitchers seriously catch bullpens? Isn't this risky? Couldn't they hire college or high school catchers to do that? Hire...heck, I'd do it for free, as would most high school catchers I'd guess.
Anyone have any insight on this?
Where's Joe Mauer? He's certainly as fast as Albert, and I can't imagine him failing any of the other tools. He's probably the best base runner on a team of above average base runners.
And if pigs had wings, blah, blah, blah. They're not in the East....that's what Strat-o-matic is for.
Nothing like the blue stuff I got in El Paso....Eisenburg is King
All the nitpicking guys. The things you seem to be asking for, seem to be things that any informed and knowledgeable fantasy player can do in his head. Rank players within tiers? You don't know enough about these guys to do that yourself?
This format seems very useful to me...the rest of the stuff I can do in my head during a draft. There's only so much of Marc to go around, and I'd prefer to see him use his talents creating more output, than "polishing" this stuff, which I can do myself.
Maybe not unfair, but makes it easy to root against them, which is why they're the most hated team on the planet.
This is a very good point. The Twins sure could have used Santana for the final year of his contract, as they were a competitive team, surprisngly.
Who's saying there's a possibility the Twins take a run at Halladay? I find it hard to believe, although I think they have the stuff to put together a package.
On the Punto thing, wouldn't it make more sense to go after Feliz to play 3rd base, let Cabrera go, and play their cadre of utility guys, lead by Punto, at 2nd base.
