when Farrell says that Lester "added length" to the cutter, what does he mean?
Sands never batted as a member of the Red Sox because the season was over by the time (on October 4) his contract was assigned to the Red Sox organization. He and Rubby De La Rosa were players to be named later.
I once heard Bobby Valentine say that he looked at the glove side to get an idea of whether a pitcher was tiring. He particularly thought some pitchers held the glove side lower as they tired.
Any thoughts on that?
You are overqualified for the job of proving Mitch Albom an idiot.
As per Baseball-Reference, which I consulted only seconds ago, Ike Davis's BABIP is .196. not .473. What was your source? It's almost impossible to hit under .200 with a .473 BABIP.
Craig, did you see any of Paulino's start earlier this week? Looked to me like he threw the ball pretty well - 94-96 on the fastball, slider was effective, curve OK after a rocky start. He even got a swing and miss on a change. Was your comment just a snarky "he's a KC starter so he sucks" or was it based on anything you've seen since he came over?
Well done, Larry! Sabean's comment goes beyond whining and amounts almost to a threat against Cousins. Will we see any disciplinary action? I doubt it, but something needs to be done.
Heard that Lamb's velocity was down yesterday - any word on that?
Your announcement said so much about your good fortune, and rightfully so - but every bit of your good fortune has turned out to be the same for all of your readers. I'll be following you and Dave at the Sweet Spot and looking forward to your appearances here, however rare. Thanks for all of it (especially LaRochefoucald, whose Maxims I bought after reading them in a recent transactions column - wonderful stuff) and continued good fortune.
I'm with HeavyHitter - his stuff was better than most of the AL closers I watched last year - what was the problem with it? With the fastball at 93-4 the changeup became a legitimate out pitch.
Chris Carter would have added some power to that lineup, would he not? This trade seems to leave him without a spot. What might the A's plans for him be?
What's next for Weeks? Do the A's re-sign Mark Ellis or does Weeks get a chance to make the jump next spring?
You wrote about Josh Hamilton: "There are still so many questions about his lifestyle based on his history of substance abuse."
What are those questions? Does your model take into account the risk of a relapse? Based on what data? Can you specify a couple of the "so many" questions?
Nothing to add except "thank you, Joe" - just perfect.
The Red Sox might want to trade Matsuzaka, but he has a full no-trade which would be quite costly (his agent is someone named Boras) to waive.
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone shared the thoughts behind the vote? Wouldn't it be even nicer if there always were thoughts behind the vote?
Thanks, Christina, for sharing - after the National league surprise (to me, at least), it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top.
I don't see Seattle, with their new emphasis on defense, as a fit for Bay, whose performance in LF this year was "Jason being Manny."
Joe, you're absolutely right about McClellan being taken off the field right now - on the second blown call he made absolutely no attempt to get into position to make the call. It wasn't exactly a bang-bang play - it could easily have been anticipated from the moment the ball was hit, and McClellan was out of position when the tags were made. Shameful and inexcusable - an embarrassment that cannot be overcome in any other way than by suspending McClellan immediately and indefinitely.
I think part of Uehara\'s early problems last year were related to his pre-season press conference at which he announced he would declare free agency and move to MLB in 2009. He wasn\'t treated with the same respect by his employers as he would have been had he kept his own counsel. In short, they jerked him around for a while. Based on his stuff, there\'s no reason why he shouldn\'t be a solid number 4-5 guy for at least a year or two.
