Love the new PECOTA...would like to see historical VORP for the players.
Thanks. I've done some writing with Will so I'll let him name drop the site if appropriate.
On the baseball front, Will, I'd actually support getting one of the top catchers. Its a thin position and needing 2 makes it important to have 1 that can anchor the position. The 2nd one is fungible and you can add/drop as needed thru the season. I think you pay for one of the mashers at 1B also. After all, between 1B, CI and DH you'd like a big bat. 2B drops after the top few but still think you can get a Kelly Johnson cheap. OF and SP are deep...we already talked about finding cheap pitching. I try to spend no more than 30% of my budget on pitching...usually spend even less and allocate to hitting as the draft unfolds.
Which is the last point and a couple here have mentioned this. You really need to see what the auction offers you...just like Billy Beane, maximize what you can exploit.
All of this is based on this being a draft. With you taking Jenn and Luke (a movie director), I suspect this is something more, such as a film about the dark secrets of fantasy baseball...ala Rounders. So of course, you need to focus more on the drama. When Chris Liss from Rotowire beats you out by $1 on Aaron Hill, give him the stink eye. Bellow out "Damn you Liss" and then jump the table and charge him.
If Marc is your Ed Norton, then beware that he might be going into this to take advantage of all these "expert league" patsies. Only to get discovered stacking the deck by hacking the software keeping track of the draft and getting you and him pummeled and thrown out bloodied into the street. So of course the biggest piece of advice is to go packing. When Karabell comes swinging at you, show him the piece and use the line from Rorschach in Watchmen - "You don't get it..I'm not locked in here with you...you're locked in here with ME". Intimidate.
Damn, I'm gettig goosebumps just thinking about this movie...
