I'm pretty sure you meant 'whitnessing'.
Martin Gasparini has since signed for a larger bonus.
No discussion of baseball commercials is complete without these:
So I'm not really a college football fan, and don't understand the Tebow thing at all. There are many great college QB that flame out of the NFL. Why is he different? Is it all the Jesus bit?
This is awesome, glad to have it before someone gets Judge to up his cliche game.
Playoff hero <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=65863">Christian Colon</a></span> was claimed by the Marlins.
'have a terrible rotation'
Really? It's been their lone bright spot this year, ranking 11th on BP team stat page. Dog in burning cafe overall, but it isn't the rotation's fault.
This is excellent.
Cleveland OF still terrible and pitchers iffy. Detroit running out the same tired guys, and HOF Miggy. Twins and Sox rebuilding. If the Royals sell at the deadline I'll eat your hat. One of them. I'll eat one hat if Hos or Moose gets dealt in July.
This is awesome. I like the three strikeouts and you're out idea, but it needs to be combined with a penalty box and dunce cap.
IMO what kills a game's pace is the endless string of pitching changes after the 6th. Give a manager a max # of pitching subs, let's say four. You get four pitchers per 9 innings. If a game goes into extras, you get one extra substitution every two innings.
There will have to be an injury exception, so with this caveat: if you pull a guy b/c he is 'injured', and he doesn't go on the DL, you get 3 subs for the next week.
I'd also end the replay coordinator role - a manager can immediately challenge a close play determined by his own eyes, not those of the video guy in the clubhouse.
I'm surprised <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=102810">Samir Duenez</a></span> didn't knock one of the crappy pitchers out of the top 10.
Sure, in the universe that Oakland won the 2014 Wildcard and Houston won the 2015 ALDS.
...stagnation of Kansas City
What a weird description of a team that won back-to-back league titles, and a championship 14 months ago. Cincy fans should be ao lucky.
Yes, let us all unite to protect precious snowflake Grasul's sense of fairness, in an article about baseball unfairness.
This is wonderful, thanks.
Never mind, game story says he injured himself running into the wall in the top of the first. Damn.
Do you know what happened to Johan Mieses Sunday?
"I never hear anyone say that struggling actors/actresses should be paid a living wage while they are waiting tables between auditions."
Then you aren't paying attention.
This is around 25.6
I've hit refresh eleventy-seven times. Thanks.

Schrodinger's cat calling balls and strikes.
You see <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=59641">Reymond Fuentes</a></span> having a long career in KC? It's between him and Gore going down when Dyson comes back next week.
Was hoping for a Levis or Wrangler executive presentation on how not selling jeans here is the new selling jeans here.

Never mind, all burnt.
This was really good. Thank you.
Two years from now, the Giants will be able to pay market price for another ace.
It's like leasing a car. Who buys a car to enjoy miles 100,000+ anyway? You tolerate it if you have to, but those first couple years feel pretty good.
Hilarious, a gratuitous jab at the manager with the highest winning percentage in post-season history.
You have any evidence for that claim?
Fields played at Bethany College in Kansas.
I'll readily admit to being a complete Royals homer, but the Mets are much less scary a match up then the Blue Jays or Astros were. Last year the Royals were thrilled just to make it to the World Series. The Royals have been inordinately good against good pitching, IMO b/c guys with plus command due them a favor by keeping pitches close to the black.
It might be too much to ask, but I wish the Royals were starting Young in game 2 and 6.
I would have just died if Hosmer broke for home.
Nice article. A quibble - you couldn't find a stock picture in Royals' livery for KC's managerial win leader?
It was tough giving up Russell in the Greinke deal, but the 2015 Flag will fly forever!
This has been amazing, thanks.
This article seem blind to the most likely source of error - the projections being systematically off. Royals homer alert - but lottery ticket, really? <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=PECOTA" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('PECOTA'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">PECOTA</span></a> was the outlier in such a gloomy forecast, I suspect b/c it undervalues defense. The offensive explosion has been great, but PECOTA thought the pitching would be 100 runs worse in 2015. Isn't happening.
I think, qualitatively, it needs to be strike three.
This is excellent, thanks.
I dunno, maybe more arty beer shots. Also, did everyone else already know about bottom-filling beer? That was a 5 minute Google-hole.
Can't answer for hillcat, but mudcat is a fish.
Hey thanks I appreciate it! Its cool getting a response from a guy like you!
I'm guessing the years-on now under appreciation of the Royals by PECOTA indicates a systemic under appreciation of defense and baserunning.
I'll take the over on wins and the under on starting pitcher ERAs.
hey so Im 12 years old and was wondering if you had any tips on the best way to gain control. I love the inside fastball, but I'm always concerned that ill hit the gay, giving him the base. I've been told to just trust you're gut and go with it, but was sure there was a way I could get better with it. Thanks for the time.
Explanation #2A for a team to sign this contract: the marginal value of a win is a meaningless construct when the industry is making money faster than the supply of ballplayers to spend it on can be developed. Rizzo can't call down to Hagerstown to ramp up production.
Re: Shields - Gotta be the Rockies.

Oh that it were so easy to 'fix'
Salvy fouled out.
I know nothing about Preller but his actions the past couple of weeks. I saw him interviewed on mlb network and he has to learn to look at the camera. He shifted his focus several times throughout the short interview, but never at the viewer. He came across as a shady frat guy wanting to date your daughter.
sent you an email

If anyone wants to take on a similar project, I'm in a 24-team league with 225-man roster that has two openings.
... ended in 'boy'
Robert E Lee was a hero the same way Benedict Arnold was.
I sure hope the Royals keep Gore on the roster over Ibanez, who offers nothing.
Podcast idea - you are the idiosyncratic closer. Come up with a save celebration for each opponent.

I think if Mejia had saved his cast for a Marlins game it would have stuck.
The Royals would have been better off being idle but they lost a sloppy game to the Red Sox. Cleveland gained 1 1/2 games on KC and 1 game on the idle Tigers.
...is in the other league. Sorry.
At what length would the average baseball game become tiresome for you?
I'm 41. It hasn't happened yet.
Ever watched cricket?
Not sure the need for the gratuitous couch-potato slam. For the record I don't own a couch. I do like sitting at the ballpark.
Some games are longer because the starters bomb and the managers go full LaRussa with the bullpen. Some are quicker, and by a large factor. You never know what you are going to get. That is part of the draw for me. I don't understand the hand-wringing.
or are always better. stupid lack of edit.
I'm firmly with K Goldstein on this: more of my favorite things is always better. Don't understand the opposite mindset - 'Gee, once the game hits 2:45 I lose all interest...?'
Thanks Jason. Happy trails.
Carlos Sanchez was called up by the White Sox to take Beckham's spot and has started the three games since.
I would have to put the '91 and '97 World Series endings at the top of my list.
Carlos Sanchez promoted by White Sox.
I think the more likely explanation is the league's change in approach to KC and the Royals lack of adjustment.
'Hey you don't have to swing at those.'
Now if he could only get through to Hosmer.
The A's called up Vogt... to play in the OF?
Or just sign 500 HS kids and have them throw 300 innings a year. At 22 put the five that are left in your rotation.
Great article, thanks.
Couldn't the Towers/SD Bullpen conundrum be easiest explained by assuming that someone not named 'Kevin Towers', and that never left, is scouting/signing these arms?
I agree with all of that. I was surprised that package of goods was seen as more valuable than Zimmer or Duffy.
I'm not sure whether seeing Moose listed above Zimmer and Duffy (in the 25 & under)is exciting or depressing. He doesn't pick it well enough to hit like Feliz or Inge, seems that likely #3 starters would rank higher than that.
I agree, need to change the headline. Lots of squeeze jokes possible. Pick one.
Re: Arguelles - so you're saying there's a chance?
86 wins was fun. Need to avoid the regression fairy.
237. MMm munch munch munch. Though he did miss some time.
Why was the Rays bench coach making pitching changes?
The ballpark made them do it.
I'm starting Mendoza and his awesome mane vs those two teams.
Royals for sure.
You don't think Aviles' pop will be worth a buck?
Zack's gotta learn the 'side-step, throw to ground/knee' move in his off time. Another option I've always wanted to see is for the pitcher charge back and make an open field tackle with the catcher cleaning up.
Sure hope Vogt is able to catch on somewhere and get that 4 for 4 night he has coming.
Meche was a pretty good signing until Trey Hillman slagged him arm. He also walked away from the last year of his deal, which I still find amazing.
I never did figure out which Brian Hunter or Alex Gonzalez was which.
Clap. Clap. Clap. Clap.
I might print this out and frame it.
Gonna miss Phoenix this spring, thanks for the update.
Thanks to all the apologists, but Phoenix is a hell-hole. A hell-hole that has baseball in Nov., Feb., and March. Without the baseball fix I wouldn't get closer than Flagstaff for a million bucks.
If you don't like the political commentary fix your shitty state. Except the baseball.
Thank you so much for writing this.
In Dayton's defense, they don't need to improve by 24 games. Only 18 or so, piece of cake.
Wait, Elliot &&**^^ Johnson???? 91 wins baby.
Where would Chapman have ended up on this list?
Also, if Getz is limited to 252 PA (absent catastrophic injury) I'll eat my hat.
This is totally worth seven years of Wil Myers.
I so love these Sobsequys.
Bocce Jeter is genius.
What a bunch of studs. Insert uncomfortable Parksian sexual reference here.
Very excited to see I share a birthday with Kyle Zimmer - and HOFers Larry Doby and Ferguson Jenkins. 12/13 Baby!
Where did Mondesi come up with Kevin Mench's hat? What is that, a size 9?
Does anyone know what happened to Hochever? I read he 'was tendered', but nothing about an amount in the KC Star. Does that mean they are going to arbitration?
1990 KC Royals, coming off a 90-win season signed Mark and Storm Davis. Add in a fading Brett and 'Bo Knows' baseball and ... they won 75 games.
Dayton Moore can't be that dumb, right? Lohse to the Yankees.
How about where they end up? Lohse is a Yankee. Melky to the Rays. Upton to the Cubs. Mark it, Donny.
Thank you for posting this, I was in boot camp at the time and never knew (or had bothered to look up) the story behind Eskew's bleeding head, only that it had happened.
Culver's is quality grease. Easy 5,6 with bacon.
Excited to hear about Almonte.
Have Trout/Harper ruined 20 yr old prospects for us? Is MLB debut at 23 realistic for Starling?
You guys should charge more. Beautiful.
I'm sorry for your loss. Wonderful tribute, thank you for sharing this.
Mijares must be a serious a-hole.
Wait, a comment from (0) in 1969????? Did Kirk come back in time for the Trekkie characters? BABIP and VORP and xFIP and WAR had to be red shirts, right?
Huh, I'm pretty sure I thought Rapada and Zavada were the same dude. Two Clays, really?
Perhaps it is comforting to live in a world where the greatest modern Japanese baseball player is equivalent to a Chinese-American basketball sensation, at least to black helicopter pilots. Insane. 'Asian', really?
The Royals drive me nuts b/c they have had approx 426 TV announcers the past five years. Pick someone and stick with them forcryingoutloud.
Cheaper than any other addiction I have. Keep it coming.
Great, my favorite pickle is from Porubsky's in Topeka, KS:
Horseradish and ... brimstone? Devil spit? For three seconds blood flies from your eyelids, then it passes and you want more.
Love yelling 'Pickle' at the TV with my sons, we were able to do it live for Harper's boo-boo from the upper deck...
Welcome to the brotherhood, I'd wager half the men under 60 in KC have kissed a strange mouth at Kelly's...
Collins is a lefty.
This one article is worth the yearly price. Thanks.
CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP
That might be the best one-paragraph review of the Royals this year, bonus factoid: Mama's Family was supposedly set in Raytown, MO, a KC 'burb.
I was 12 yrs old when the Royals won it all, pity the poor Cubs or Indian fan. I have a (realistic?) hope that my sons - 9, 7, and 4 - may feel the same joy and become hooked for life - we'll worry about the details later...
I love the way Castillo looks at his bat after his swing-and-miss, I can hear the internal dialogue: 'Oh, yeah, a bat. I thought I was swinging an oar there for a minute. Oops.'
I don't think the Royals thought Hosmer was going to help them when the Central. He was hitting 439/525/582 after 26 AAA games. He was ready. Harper, not so much.
Luigi Rodriguez: back to 2B?
Late, but loved this. Thank you.
Won't the play be to draft college Srs. for a thousand bucks in the early rounds, then using that $$$ to sign guys that fall? As long as they sign a pick they get to keep the bonus room, right?
I was really hoping for a better defense than 'the greedy old people get to keep more of their money'. I guess none will be forthcoming.
Is there anyone that can cogently explain this solution in search of a problem? I'm sure the folks that voted on the agreement thought they were solving... something, but I sure don't understand what. I'm genuinely curious.
"free medical care, educations"
This is simply false. Someone working here under a bogus SSN pays taxes into a system they won't benefit from. Those working for cash pay sales tax on stuff they buy, and property taxes through their rent. The idea that they don't pay taxes is silly. Illegal immigrants also don't qualify for food stamps or earned income credit, ways our federal government helps ameliorate poverty for citizens.
"I don't see where illegal immigration comes into play or how it helps or hinders Latino integration in MLB."
Right. And Lavagetto was simply trying to preserve the game he knew. The quotes by Navarro and Hernandez should help inform you of the answer to your own question.
Depressing to see Yuni in print. I will be disappointed if Hosmer turns into Butler and Moose into Shea Hillenbrand.
This has to be the best Royals pitching projection this century, doesn't it? Even if it is the drop in offense and moving the fences back I'll take 5 guys under 5.00 ERA.
Did that after posting this morning and had the same result.
Several 'de's to sort out, and the whole process is silly. I can't see anyone wanting to sort 1000s of baseball players by first name.
...and thank you very much. Small complaint: please never list by first name. Pujols, Albert, or separate cells. My first action is always to sort alphabetically so I can search easily. Now, not so much.
Thanks for the response, Jim. It wasn't clear to me how old the boy was - I have a 8,7, and 4 yr little troop of guys myself.
I think your son exhibited a common reaction that I was responding to, generally.
"I'm repeatedly disappointed when generalizations are made."
That made me giggle.
I mean, part of me would be disappointed if some of the most competitive people on the planet, professional athletes, weren't seeking out every edge.
Also, thank you for an article to savor. Very well done.
I am repeatedly amused by those shocked and disappointed by moral failings in human endeavors.
The doubling-down on naivete with outrage that the world doesn't meet our (incorrect and unfounded) expectations is ugly behavior.
Three to four. As in, he had a 3-4 of 2.7 last year.
Selig has been great - for the owners. Yippie, billionaires have more money. He has been a consistent disaster for fans.
1) Cancelled season
2) Tie All-Star game
3) Contraction, killing one franchise and threatening another
4) Dithering with PEDs
5) Most importantly, losing 'America's game' title to football on his watch.
He can't go soon enough.
This article marks 'The Narrative', the 'once we got rid of that lousy ARod and all the people who didn't want to win, we won!' school of analysis.
Goldstein's playoff loss talk radio twitter feed is more amusing, if equally useful.
Am I the only Royals fan nervous that Alex Gordon is the only OF Dayton Moore has to deal that hasn't flopped in Atlanta already?
Thanks Derek, hopefully the Reds make their decision early in the off-season.
Since the initial auction in '08 almost everyone worth a darn comes up through the minor leagues and they have different contracts.
RP FA last off-season include League went for 6.33 on a 260 scale and M Adams went for 5.88 on a 260 scale.
I was able to get Camp, Resop, and Durbin at the minimum contract of .68/260.
40 man rosters, start 10 P (25 man active roster)
I have to decide on an option for Chapman this off-season before spring training (Jan). Very deep 24 team league, equivalent of 14.25 for the next 3 yrs, 2012-14, (for a $260 league). Keep 'em and hope the Reds are sane, or cut bait and target elsewhere during the auction? I have no other closer candidates...
Totally agree with the above post. Interesting, good explanation, not necessarily helpful if it is not a repeatable skill.
Thanks for the holiday edition, from a working stiff on Labor Day...
Absolutely appreciate the response. Sort of glad to hear you all are as confused by the Royals as I am. Sort of sad. Thanks again.
Confused by the Royals, but think if I squint I see:
1. Francour = supplemental pick when he walks
2. Cain not necessarily better than Melky, only a year or so younger...
3. So, in 2012 who plays right between Gordon, Cain, Melky?
4. Johnny G up in a couple weeks????
Add three SP and maybe they have something...
As a Royals fan, this is a deal I wish KC would have made - Montgomery, Crow, Clint Robinson for Ubaldo in 12 and 13 would have been a huge win.
I remember reading this at the time and hoping in my little blue Royal fan heart that Joe was wrong, while my head knew he was right.
Hey, Getz (through Teahen) may yet turn in to an A-ball arm that can pan out, right, right???
Can Jordan Pacheco catch? Could he follow the Gregg Zaun career path?
Mark it, Dude, Duffy is the next prospect to show in KC.
A screen would also help protect the players from drunken idiots. Wrap it all the way around to the foul poles.
We'll all know we have been living right if it winds up being a Duffy or Montgomery start...
Assuming he squares up a ball this year and hits a sinking liner to center, I'm betting Jarrod Dyson could beat that time.
Not sure posting a link is kosher, but here is the KC Star's attempt at a boxscore of the Futures game Sat:
They gave up after nine innings. I'm glad you noted the Eigsti switch thing, I figured I had gone insane after 21 innings of glee.
Thanks for the write-up, great time to be a Royals fan.
I always saved Christina's articles for last. Sigh. Guess I'll be going over see what is happening at espin besides klaw chats.
And a TV station rep actually said that in 2010? Shame them with continued greatness, and good luck...
Alcides Escobar will be battling to be the sixth best hitter in the Royals lineup.
Chadwicks, that is why I always save the TAs for last, to savor, enjoy the mind-feel of where Christina goes... anyone can reproduce a transactions wire, there is probably one in your local paper if you prefer.
None of these guys are available in the 'deep' league I'm in, Linares was drafted a couple of rounds ago in our minor league free agent draft.
So this has bothered me for a while now: what else comes in ten packs?
Beer or any other beverages? Nope.
TP? I've seen 4, 6, 12, 24...
Hotdogs? Eight? or is that buns? I never can keep that straight - but one or the other is a ten pack.
And mostly naturally occuring fingers, of course.
That's all I've got: fingers, hot dogs, and KG's prospects.
Well, that was pointless. (wink)
Also disagree. I enjoy the series.

Prospects. Are. Always. Over-rated.
Cain looks worse than I hoped, but I hope you are right that he gets that much PT.
On the other hand, that rotation looks much better than I feared. Through in some Moose and a couple of arms after June 15th or so and we may have hope yet.
Bourjos if he can get some singles to fall in...
AJ Morris went to Kansas STATE, a Wildcat not a Jaychicken.
Personally wouldn't miss Carroll at all, have avoided his columns for some time.
Kahrl and Goldstein are the deal-breakers for this subscriber.
Many people will choose a false sense of certainty rather than deal with a (more rational) degree of uncertainty in every facet of life. That is why some want you to tell them who is the eleventh best 2B in the AL next year. You can 1)give in to them, but keep the tiers or 2) leave them squirm.
I'd pick 2, but I'm not trying to please customers.
I always save the TA's for last. Thanks Christina.
Greinke, Zack Greinke. 42 and counting in his year 25 season.
I have a bad feeling the 2009 Royals second-sacker will be part of next year's article. I have May 18th as the day Hillman shrugs and starts writing 'Bloomquist' everyday.
German released. I am afraid, as a Royals fan, that Callaspo/Bloomquist will be much closer to 50/50 at 2B.
