Was at the game in Durham. Sorry you had to see the Bulls get rolled like that, as they're usually much more interesting to watch.
No fair quoting The Monarch without letting Doctor Venture have a chance for rebuttal.
To be fair, we'd offer Kroon a better beer than a Bud in Durham should he wander our way. Full Steam Brewery's a mostly sober amble from the DBAP
The best tool in the world is worthless if no one uses it.
If you tell a restaurant patron that he's an idiot for not understanding in detail the precise steps necessary to make a complicated dish, odds are he's going to stop coming to your restaurant, and instead go out for a hamburger. A wall of impenetrable jargon is great for making those on the inside feel special and elite, but it doesn't really do much to expand the understanding that jargon represents.
Now, I'm not suggesting that the high-level statistical analysis pieces should go away. They're absolutely necessary and absolutely appropriate for BP. But if the ideas presented in those pieces are not then made accessible to the broader base of fan, we're in for an endless cycle of "new stat -> general fan base doesn't use new stat -> stat community bewails idiocy of general fan base for not getting the new stat -> general fan base accuses stat community of living in their parents' basement". All of which doesn't do anything to advance understanding of the game, develop a more rigorous approach to fandom, or keep juvenile BP subscribers from being beaten up at recess.
The new statistical approaches are important. So is getting people to understand how important they are, and why they should be using them.
Bah! The great Centauri Republic spits on your tiny human debate!
The Phillies would seem to be a good trade match for San Diego. Start the package with Donald and Marson, and you've given the Padres two guys ready to start in the big leagues right now at positions where San Diego's seriously weak. Sprinkle another prospect on top of that, and it might be the start of something interesting.
