Every photo I see of Victor Martinez has his catcher's mitt on his left hand (and BP says he throws righty). Every report I've read has the fracture on his left thumb. Every time I disagree with Will Carrol, he ends up being right. One of these streaks is going to end...
Jacoby Ellsbury doesn't run backwards. He moves with blinding speed forwards and sideways, but when going back he just sort of slowly ambles-- that's why he was moved from center field, and why he's unlikely to run into the wall.
According to some basic physics, the force on the ball should be some constant times the density of air times the square of the velocity. I wonder how much of the variation you see can be explained by changes in air density (due to weather, altitude, etc,) and changes in initial velocity, or if there are some pitchers who have extra "hop" on their fastballs (presumable due to the exact spin they put on the ball).
There are a couple ways to show two data sets on a scatter plot in excel. The easiest is to double click on the lines of the line graph and slect "none" for the type of line, which should erase the lines but leave the points so that it looks like a scatter plot. You can also go to chart>>source data>>series>>add to add another data set to a scatter plot.
I'm surprised that the Red Sox are tied for best team AVG (and tied with the offensive powerhouse Orioles, no less), have the best team OBP and the best team SLG in the AL. I see the Red Sox having trouble with an aging DH and C to go with an offensively unspectacular outfield.
