Its a ranking... which is subjective, which is based on multiple factors, which are also subjective and not easily quantifiable. Which is why it takes a team of writers and a network of scouts to put this list together. Its not like there is an equation on a chalk board, and some dude types in all the numbers and *poof* out pops the rankings...
The point that I would guess is "tired" is the no-value criticism without even an implication of a counterpoint.
You must be talking about Mike Papi the Indians prospect.
Not even a mention of Carlos Belen? I know hes striking out too much, but he's also drawing walks, and showed almost a .300 ISO in the AZL (including 9 triples).
Sounds like Morales is being bumped from Colorado's rotation? Chatwood is going to start this Sunday and bump out Morales?
The comment on Cashner said that he was "quickly becoming a legit ace", not that he has been one since opening day. He has the prototypical size, and despite being a bit older than a normal prospect, he has thrown a limited number of innings to this point in his career. His velocity is elite for a SP, and his groundball rate is over 50% and in the top ten in the league as well. Particularly in the second half, he has added 1 k/9 versus the first half of the season. I think the scouting and the stats match up fairly well in this case.
Zach, this column is outstanding, and honestly, the main reason that I visit this site on a daily basis. Of course, there is a ton of other great coverage at BP, but this feature is what usually gets me here so frequently.
Something I'm not clear about... didnt Grandal, Melky Cabrera, and Colon (and Braun technically) actually test positive for testosterone? Was that tied to use from Biogenesis, and if so, is that not indicating that testing is working on some level? If not, why are they getting a free pass on this one?
My fault... not sure what I was thinking with keystone as 3B. Monday morning, not enough coffee... thanks for the response.
First off, just wanted to say that I love the transformation the scouting related articles here at BP have undergone the past year. Fantastic stuff... I also wanted to say that I was confused by this comment regarding Paulino: " but he has the arm for third and could profile well at the keystone, where there would be less pressure on the power tool." I read this as saying third based would put less pressure on the power tool than SS, which seems counter-intuitive?
I believe that just happens to be the AB or innings pitched total over the players last 10 games. This is counted automatically on minor league baseball .com.
I think the point of the article is that there arent hundreds or thousands of people taking to the airwaves and the internet each day wondering why the IT manager didnt upgrade the company's servers the day before. Or saying, I should be the IT manager for Big Joe's Widgets and Stuff, that guy there currently is a moron.
Second that... great work as usual from KG!
A blurb on Nick Ramirez? I know he was old for the Pioneer league and had some contact issues in the Midwest, but any future potential there besides the bat only 1B prospect?
One reason would be the draft in the middle of the season, as well any trades that could be made during the year... Maybe Theo gets someone to bite on Soriano. Or maybe having Theo on board would help give Pujols the warm and fuzzies about signing with Chicago. That might be worth a good amount on it's own.
If the year was 2007 instead of 2011, I think this same comment could have been found on a Gary Matthews Jr post... that worked out well didnt it.
Agreed, KG and his work are the main reason I visit the site on a daily basis.
Dont forget he had hamate surgery last season. I believe this often saps some of the power in the wrists and hands even after coming back. If the "surge" continues this would fit well with Montero building strength as the season goes on and getting back to some of the things he was doing before the injury.
I believe this is a reference to northern (cold weather) kids seeing less playing time and shorter seasons than southern kids.
Hey KG, I'm curious if you have any insight to Hector Rondon's struggles so far this year? He had looked impressive on the way up the last two seasons, but hes been dominated in AAA so far. The strikeouts are still there, but 44 hits and 12 HRs allowed in 6 starts so far??
Wow, please everyone, enough with the Sheehan references. One way or another. The guy doesnt work for BP anymore, move on.
Maybe everyone could look at the graphic of the stoplight that is included in the title of every single one of these articles?
Very much appreciated!
I thought the same thing when I read this. It seems like Hillman might be confusing cause and effect. As in winning teams seeing more pitches per plate appearance is not the cause of them winning but is the effect of having better hitters on the team, which typically correlates to winning a game.
Jeter wouldnt move to third to accomodate ARod, but now hes going to move for Bobby Crosby?
