Finding out who's in the field for the second-best player available in this year's June draft, plus on-campus action and news from around the nation.

I'm going to try a new approach today, allowing for more of my favorite type of analysis-diving into box scores to see if I can find something interesting. With that goal in mind, I'm going to throw a bunch of stuff at the wall, and we'll see what sticks. When I contemplated the six subplots in college baseball that intrigue me the most, this is what I came up with.

Wait 'Til Next Year: The Week in College Baseball

9

Potential first-rounder performances, and the updated Baseball Prospectus NCAA Top 25.

I must say, it seems strange to be writing about a college sport this week that isn't basketball. I mean, if I tell you that I like Arizona State and Clemson this weekend, how do you process that? I actually like the Sun Devils and Tigers in both sports, but on the maddest day of March, talking about the NCAA without mentioning Cinderella and sleepers seems... wrong. Still, I know enough to just send you over to Ken Pomeroy and John Gasaway at the other BP, and stick to what I know here.

Troubling trends in starting pitcher usage, the shifting Top 25 ratings, and weekend matchups.

Lost amid the goodwill surrounding Fresno State's Hollywood-like championship run in Omaha last season was the story of Tanner Scheppers. When the Independent League St. Paul Saints open their season this April, Scheppers' name will return to the box scores for the first time in 11 months, as the former Bulldogs' ace seeks to prove that he's healthy and to renew his pro prospect status. However, as with Alex Wilson at Texas A&M, concerns about his previous injury are likely to prevent a return to top 10 overall status, and for that, Scheppers (and Wilson, too) has one thing to blame: his workload.

Is this the best TCU team yet? Plus matchups and early-season weekend showdowns from the college game.

When coach Jim Schlossnagle leaves Fort Worth, dominance in the Mountain West Conference notwithstanding, the caliber of pitchers that have passed through Texas Christian University is likely to be his most important legacy. Consider that in the last four June amateur drafts the Horned Frogs have seen six pitchers taken in the first five rounds. In 2005, Lance Broadway became the school's first-ever first-round pick, a feat duplicated last year by Andrew Cashner. In 2007, ace Jake Arrieta fell to the fifth round before signing for first-round money.

Jump into an evaluation of the top programs in the country as Bryan ranks the NCAA Top 25.

This spring, while I continue to search for new ways to cover college baseball, I will nevertheless do one traditional exercise for anyone on this beat by ranking the national landscape to provide you with my own top 25 list. Yet, as I spent the offseason searching for the best schools to fill out the list and the best way to organize them, I began to see a few clear separations. More than specific rankings, there are what I see as relatively clear-cut tiers. Six programs stood out as the cream of the crop, 12 more are schools that are just a break or two away from contention, and after that initial 18 the final seven that make up my list are interchangeable with the bevy of near-misses that I'm sure will gain consideration or make it onto the list at some point during the season.

Evaluating defensive play in college baseball leads to some solid conclusions about its importance in the standings.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that college baseball is an offense-oriented game: the ping of the ball off of the bat testifies to that. There have been great strides made in reducing the number of games ending in football scores-only five times did a team score in double digits in Omaha-but as I watched the 19-10 slug-fest in Game Two of the College World Series championship, it was a frustrating reminder of how easily aluminum can shrink a ballpark.

One analyst's picks for college baseball's post-season field, and packing up.

Before I start today, I'd like to say that this will be my last regular article for Baseball Prospectus. Those who have followed me in the journey of the college baseball season won't be disappointed: I won't be a total stranger from these parts, as I'll be moving over to BP's friends at Major League Baseball Advanced Media. It's an opportunity that has absolutely been afforded because of this outlet, and for that, I thank the people who brought me in: Nate Silver, Will Carroll, and my friend Kevin Goldstein. I also owe significant thanks to Christina Kahrl, who in just 13 months has made me a better writer. I was a fan of BP before I wrote here, a bigger fan while I wrote here, and given what I know lies beyond the horizon, there's no reason to think I won't be a bigger fan still yet. Thanks for all the questions, all the kind words, and of course, all the criticisms.

Several conference tournament invites hung on the outcomes of this past weekend's action.

It was a Thursday-through-Saturday weekend for many teams in college baseball, as series ended early across the country so that conference tournaments could begin to be drawn up. For many teams, Saturday was their last chance to prove something: that they should make the conference tournament, that they should make the NCAA Tournament, and/or that they should host a regional. For bubble teams, next weekend will begin their do-or-die season, as they simultaneously play and scoreboard watch, to make sure no Cinderellas are winning conference tournaments. Looking through this past weekend's results, it was a pretty brutal winnowing process, as numerous teams that were on the bubble jumped off. It also featured a loss by the number one team in the country, all of which you'll read about below:

The ACC gives us a tremendous trio of matchups, and can Tulane rise to the occasion and earn a tourney berth?

At the end of this weekend, just five teams in the 12-school ACC will have conference records above .500. It's an astounding development for a loaded conference that, while usually containing a few bottom feeders, has been known for its parity. However, when Georgia Tech held Clemson to just two runs over the first two games in last weekend's series, the Yellow Jackets assured the ACC just six spots in the post-season tournament. Six spots, and it's not as if Virginia has the strongest resume in the world. I last wrote about the Cavaliers in March, when Virginia had the nation's most impressive numbers and a perfect 10-0 record. The ACC looked like it could be theirs for the taking, though it also seemed like Virginia really wasn't that good. Now, let's trace Virginia's weekends since the ACC slate opened:

Coming down the home stretch, with SEC, ACC and Pac-10 action starting to decide tournament hopes.

No elaborate opening today, as I'll let the subplots tell the stories here in the final weeks of the college baseball season. Tournament implications abound in weekend series, and here's what I found to be the six biggest stories:
