The Keeper Reaper: Starting Pitching for 1/31/13 |
Gio Gonzalez and Max Scherzer both enjoyed breakout seasons in 2012.
Last week’s in-depth look at a couple of players went well, so let’s try it again this week using two pitchers who were both on my list to be covered and recently requested by commenters.

The Keeper Reaper: First, Third, and DH for 1/30/13 |
Will Lind ever become Toronto’s hitman again? Will Plouffe’s 2012 season go poof? Will A-Gon’s value be all gone in Los Angeles? Michael answers these keeper questions in this week’s column.
Adam Lind | Toronto Blue Jays
Shallow (30 keepers): No
Medium (60 keepers): No
Deep (90 keepers): No
AL-only (60 keepers): No
Super Deep (200 keepers): Yes
Adam Lind is fantasy’s version of Michael Corleone in Godfather Part III: just when you think he’s out, he pulls himself back in. Lind has bounced in and out of fantasy relevance—and the minor leagues—tantalizing with just enough (occasional) productivity to keep him in a big league uniform (well, that, and the misbegotten four-year, $18 million deal he signed after his breakout 2009 season). It would be easy to call BABIP his Joey Zasa, the nemesis who keeps him down, since Lind’s seasons since 2009 are paralleled by diminishing BABIP returns, but there’s more to the story than that:

The Keeper Reaper: Relievers for 1/29/30 |
New York relievers from both the Bronx and Queens get examined in this week's Reaper.
Mariano Rivera | Yankees
Shallow (30 Keepers): No
Medium (60 Keepers): Fringe
Deep (90 Keepers): Yes
AL-only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes
As recently as last offseason, it was difficult to imagine Mariano Rivera as anything other than the ideal keeper candidate as far as closers go. It made perfect sense. While most stoppers have a shelf life comparable to that of an NFL running back, Mo’s run of sustained excellence more closely resembled that of a 40-something placekicker. Sure, he was bound see a decline in performance at some point, but when? Every year, we wondered: “Is this the year?” But it never seemed to arrive.

The Keeper Reaper: Second, Short, and Catcher for 1/28/13 |
Jesus Montero, Jose Altuve, and Jimmy Rollins lead off for this week's Keeper Reaper.
Jesus Montero | Seattle Mariners
Shallow (30 Keepers): No
Medium (60 Keepers): Yes
Deep (90 Keepers): Yes
AL-Only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes
Some players are willing to accept a designated hitter role on a team, yet others see their production suffer (sometimes greatly) when they don't play the field. It's very early in Montero's career, but he appears to be in the latter camp. Montero received 321 plate appearances as a designated hitter and 230 plate appearances as a catcher last year, and the difference in his slash line was staggering. As a designated hitter, Montero hit a paltry .226/.265/.309 with five home runs. Conversely, he crushed the ball as a catcher, hitting .310/.343/.498 with 10 home runs.

The Keeper Reaper: Outfielders for 1/25/13 |
Paul examines how the speed of Angel Pagan and the power of Michael Morse and Chris Davis stack up to the keeper competition.
Angel Pagan | San Francisco Giants

NL-only (60 Keepers): Fringe
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes
We’re nearing the start of February, which means the fantasy baseball community is starting to ramp up its efforts to prepare for the 2013 season. For its part, a group of industry writers, including our own Derek Carty and Jason Collette, are taking part in a “slow” mock draft, the results of which can be viewed here at David Gonos’ website. I’ve been following the draft the past few days, and one pick that stood out was Derek’s selection of Angel Pagan towards the back-end of round eight at number 116 overall. In a mock draft I participated in a couple of weeks ago, Pagan went much later (no. 170), and he is generally ranked lower than some of the outfielders Derek passed on to take him. Curious, I decided to take a closer look at Pagan.

Paul looks at the chances of Jordan Zimmermann and Mat Latos taking the next step in 2013.
There’s no general theme for today’s Keeper Reaper; instead, I’m going big with a pair of 500-word breakdowns on a pair of intriguing National Leaguers.
