Tater Trot Tracker: Hanley & the World Baseball Classic |
Hanley Ramirez got into mid-season form with his tater trot against Venezuela in the first round of the World Baseball Classic.
If you weren't watching any of the World Baseball Classic over the last 24 hours, you missed some intense and exciting games. Italy beating Mexico on a ninth-inning comeback and Japan beating Chinese Taipei in extra-innings after tying it up on their last strike are great examples of how this tournament can be so fun (especially if you love sacrifice bunts!), but the other two games were just as eventful. The battle between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic was especially rowdy, with the crowd in Puerto Rico's Hiram Bithorn Stadium cheering loudly all night, even through a 50-minute rain delay in the first inning.

Tater Trot Tracker: La Serie del Caribe, Championship Game |
Trot times for the championship game of the 2013 Caribbean Series, including trots from Karim Garcia and Douglas Clark.
Last night—and well into this morning—Mexico's Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón and Dominican Republic's Leones de Escogido battled in the championship game of the Caribbean Series. Los Yaquis defeated Los Leones, 4-3,to take the crown for the second time in three years. The game lasted seven hours and 18 innings and was only won when Mexico's Douglas Clark hit a home run over the right field fence in the top of the 18th.

Tater Trot Tracker: The Japanese Bat Flip |
An amazing video compilation of what seems to be an art form in Japanese baseball.
If this video is to be believed, the bat flip following a home run is an art in Japanese baseball. The four-minute video, created by a true baseball hero, is mesmerizing to watch. The bats just keep flying. It's as if the NPB is filled with a thousand Carlos Gomez's.

Tater Trot Tracker: World Series, Game 4 |
The tater trots for the final game of the 2012 World Series.
Heading into Sunday night, I was beginning to worry that the World Series would end with no more home runs hit. After all, besides Pablo Sandoval's big outburst on Wednesday in Game 1 and a mostly meaningless ninth-inning blast from Jhonny Peralta, we had seen zero home runs in the Fall Classic. And there wasn't much reason to expect things to change, with Game 4 being played in near-freezing temperatures and with neither the Tigers' nor Giants' bats looking all that formidable. Thankfully, a strong wind blowing high above the field Sunday night was there to help the cause.

Tater Trot Tracker: World Series, Game 1: Pablo's Big Night |
The tater trots for Game 1 of the 2012 World Series, including Pablo Sandoval's three home runs.
After the Giants and Cardinals combined for two home runs over their final three games of the National League Championship Series (with two of those games played in San Francisco), it was a bit hard to predict a home run barrage in Game 1 of the World Series. Especially with the Tigers throwing Justin Verlander.

Tater Trot Tracker: This Week in the LCS |
The tater trots from this week's LCS games. There haven't been many.
In a week full of League Championship Series games (and rainouts), there have been few home runs. In fact, in all games played Monday through Wednesday, there were a total of four home runs hit. The playoffs weren't exactly screaming for the Tater Trot Tracker this week. Things were better on Thursday, when the Tigers finished their four-game sweep of the Yankees and the Cardinals put themselves one game from the pennant with an 8-3 victory of San Francisco. The six home runs hit in Thursday's games more than double the homers hit the rest of the week. Thank God.

Tater Trot Tracker: LCS Weeked Trot Times |
The tater trots for the first LCS weekend, including Game 5's from Friday. Bryce Harper comes through with the fastest tater trot recorded in the postseason.
When last we saw the Tater Trot Tracker, we still thought the Orioles and Nationals had a chance at meeting in the World Series. Two games and one incredible comeback later, both teams are eliminated - and now, after two more games in the Bronx, some are even wondering if the Yankees have a shot at the title.

Tater Trot Tracker: Wild Card Weekend Trot Times |
The tater trots from the first weekend of playoff baseball.
Wild Card Weekend was wild in a lot of ways (whoever thought the infield fly rule would ever actually be debated?!), but it was seriously lacking in one regard: home runs. In the eight games played this weekend, a total of nine home runs were hit. That's not exactly lighting the world on fire.
