Rumor Roundup: Santana Signing Soon?

7

Daniel Rathman

Catching you up on the weekend's conflicting reports about Ervin Santana, Shane Victorino's switch-hitting decision, and White Sox trade rumors.

Ervin Santana might be in a rush to sign; or, maybe not
FOX Sports baseball insiders Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi got some conflicting information over the weekend. Rosenthal heard that Ervin Santana was itching to join a club and could settle for a one-year deal to get down to spring training as soon as possible. Morosi, on the other hand, was told that Santana might “wait days” before accepting an offer.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes had more concrete news on the Santana front: He wrote on Saturday that the right-hander has two offers on the table that would essentially match the qualifying offer from the Royals that Santana rejected last fall. The Blue Jays would hand him $14 million for the 2014 season, while the Orioles’ bid was at $13 million with incentives that could at least bump the value up to the $14.1 million paycheck he turned down.

Rumor Roundup: A.J. Griffin Cuts His Cutter

2

Daniel Rathman

An Oakland arm changes his arsenal, and Billy Butler dusts off his glove.

A.J. Griffin cuts his cutter
Some of the most interesting stories to come out of spring training surround players who make material changes and are open about them with the media. A.J. Griffin, who ate 200 innings for the Athletics last year but served up 36 home runs along the way, is one of those players.

Rumor Roundup: A Trio of Infield Updates

0

News from spring training on Mike Carp, the Dodgers' second-base battle, and Atlanta's Tommy La Stella.

Brewers, Pirates scouting Red Sox—specifically Mike Carp
Boston Globe national baseball writer Nick Cafardo heard over the weekend that the Brewers and Pirates have sent scouts to Fort Myers, Florida, to watch the Red Sox in Grapefruit League action. According to Cafardo, both clubs may be eyeing Mike Carp.

Rumor Roundup: An Infield Fix for the Yankees?

1

Daniel Rathman

The Yankees might deal from depth to fix a hole, Brian Dozier wants to stay in Minnesota, and more.

Yankees could trade a catcher for an infielder or reliever
Yes, you read that correctly: The team that gave Chris Stewart 340 plate appearances behind the dish last year now has a surplus at the catcher position. According to George A. King III of the New York Post, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is considering parting with one of his homegrown backstops for depth at a shallower position.

Rumor Roundup: What Ervin is Asking

0

Daniel Rathman

Assessing Santana's price tag, plus the latest on Jeff Samardzija and Johan Santana.

Ervin Santana’s asking price still four years, $50 million
The calendar will soon read March, and Opening Day is fast approaching, but Ervin Santana is holding firm to his demands. According to executives who spoke with CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, the right-hander wants $50 million over four years. Matt Garza, Ricky Nolasco, and Ubaldo Jimenez got roughly that guarantee—so, in the minds of Santana and his agent, Bean Stringfellow, the former Royal deserves the same.

Rumor Roundup: The Remains of the Market

4

Daniel Rathman

A new team checks in on Ervin Santana, the Yankees pass on two Cuban players, three teams monitor the market for Johan Santana, and more.

Ross Detwiler expands his pitch menu
Right-handed hitters teed off on Ross Detwiler last season, regardless of what the southpaw threw them in his 13 major-league starts. They hit .346 off his sinker, .357 off his changeup, and .375 off his curveball; his fastball held them to a .241 average, but they still slugged .456, in large part because four of the five home runs they tallied came on heaters.

Rumor Roundup: Extending Trout

7

Daniel Rathman

The Angels try to keep Trout around, plus updates on Ervin Santana and Kendrys Morales.

Angels, Mike Trout in talks about six-year, $150 million extension
Earlier this winter, there was buzz that the Angels might approach Mike Trout about a long-term contract that would guarantee him more money up front, perhaps in exchange for an extra year or two in a Halos uniform. Now, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan has given us a window into what such a contract might look like.

Rumor Roundup: Whither Santana?

4

Daniel Rathman

Ervin Santana might not be Toronto-bound, plus news about Raul Ibanez' ongoing defensive adventures and Nick Franklin's future home.

Ervin Santana probably won’t land north of the border
Once word leaked that Ubaldo Jimenez was going to become an Oriole, some presumed that the Blue Jays would ante up and reel in the other remaining high-profile free agent starting pitcher. But ESPN’s Jayson Stark has heard from multiple sources that general manager Alex Anthopoulos does not intend to break the bank for Ervin Santana.

Stark wrote on Wednesday that the Blue Jays will come away with Santana only if his asking price falls into the range they have in mind. If agent Bean Stringfellow sticks to his guns, industry sources—both in other organizations and on the player-representation side—don’t believe that the Blue Jays will budge.

Rumor Roundup: Chris Capuano, Free Agent of Interest

1

Daniel Rathman

Chris Capuano and Stephen Drew draw interest from multiple teams, and Drew Pomeranz is still a starter.

Mariners in active discussions with Chris Capuano
With Ubaldo Jimenez off the market on a four-year, $50 million deal with the Orioles, the Mariners are running out of veteran starters with whom to pad their rotation. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman wrote on Tuesday that while the team at least kicked the tires on Jimenez and has been in touch with the still-available Ervin Santana, its top target at the moment might be Chris Capuano.

Rumor Roundup: Looking for Lefty Relief

0

Daniel Rathman

Checking in on Oliver Perez' availability and Carlos Santana's transition to third base.

Four teams in on Oliver Perez
Two years ago, the Mariners revived Oliver Perez’s major-league career by moving him to the bullpen. He ended up spending two seasons in Seattle, the latter on a one-year, $1.5 million contract that he signed on November 3, 2012, less than five months after the Mariners brought him back to the Show. But the 32-year-old’s stay in the Emerald City might be over, with four teams in the running to become his next employer.

Cafardo believes that Perez could choose his team in the coming days so that he can report to camp and catch up with the pitchers who settled in last week. The four teams that are courting him remain a mystery, but Bob Dutton, who covers the Mariners for the Tacoma News Times, hasn’t heard anything to suggest that he might be back. First-year manager Lloyd McClendon already has a couple of lefties at his disposal in Charlie Furbush and Lucas Luetge, and the Mariners invited Joe Beimel and Randy Wolf to camp to compete for jobs.

Rumor Roundup: The Team That Cried Free Agent

2

Daniel Rathman

The Orioles are still in the market for a starter, and Milwaukee might talk to Jean Segura about an extension.

Orioles willing to cough up a draft pick to sign a top free agent
Memo to the representatives for the free agents who declined qualifying offers and have not yet signed: call Dan Duquette. According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are willing to cough up their first-round pick.

Rumor Roundup: Extensions Afoot?

6

Daniel Rathman

The Angels talk contract with Mike Trout, the Royals try to decide what to do with their bullpen, and Seattle reassesses its needs.

Royals could explore multi-year deal with Greg Holland
The Royals got on the same page with their closer on Wednesday, when the sides compromised on a $4.675 million salary for the 2014 season. Kansas City Star beat writer Andy McCullough wrote in the article summing up the agreement that a longer-term pact might be in the cards.

Holland turned in a third consecutive elite season last year, recording 47 saves in 50 tries to go with a shiny 1.21 ERA that meshed well with his 1.39 FIP. He struck out 103 batters, issued only 18 walks, and served up only three home runs in 67 innings. You could easily argue that the 28-year-old was the league’s best closer.
