Rumor Roundup: Chris Capuano, Free Agent of Interest

1

Daniel Rathman

Chris Capuano and Stephen Drew draw interest from multiple teams, and Drew Pomeranz is still a starter.

Mariners in active discussions with Chris Capuano
With Ubaldo Jimenez off the market on a four-year, $50 million deal with the Orioles, the Mariners are running out of veteran starters with whom to pad their rotation. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman wrote on Tuesday that while the team at least kicked the tires on Jimenez and has been in touch with the still-available Ervin Santana, its top target at the moment might be Chris Capuano.

Rumor Roundup: Looking for Lefty Relief

0

Daniel Rathman

Checking in on Oliver Perez' availability and Carlos Santana's transition to third base.

Four teams in on Oliver Perez
Two years ago, the Mariners revived Oliver Perez’s major-league career by moving him to the bullpen. He ended up spending two seasons in Seattle, the latter on a one-year, $1.5 million contract that he signed on November 3, 2012, less than five months after the Mariners brought him back to the Show. But the 32-year-old’s stay in the Emerald City might be over, with four teams in the running to become his next employer.

Cafardo believes that Perez could choose his team in the coming days so that he can report to camp and catch up with the pitchers who settled in last week. The four teams that are courting him remain a mystery, but Bob Dutton, who covers the Mariners for the Tacoma News Times, hasn’t heard anything to suggest that he might be back. First-year manager Lloyd McClendon already has a couple of lefties at his disposal in Charlie Furbush and Lucas Luetge, and the Mariners invited Joe Beimel and Randy Wolf to camp to compete for jobs.

Rumor Roundup: The Team That Cried Free Agent

2

Daniel Rathman

The Orioles are still in the market for a starter, and Milwaukee might talk to Jean Segura about an extension.

Orioles willing to cough up a draft pick to sign a top free agent
Memo to the representatives for the free agents who declined qualifying offers and have not yet signed: call Dan Duquette. According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are willing to cough up their first-round pick.

Rumor Roundup: Extensions Afoot?

6

Daniel Rathman

The Angels talk contract with Mike Trout, the Royals try to decide what to do with their bullpen, and Seattle reassesses its needs.

Royals could explore multi-year deal with Greg Holland
The Royals got on the same page with their closer on Wednesday, when the sides compromised on a $4.675 million salary for the 2014 season. Kansas City Star beat writer Andy McCullough wrote in the article summing up the agreement that a longer-term pact might be in the cards.

Holland turned in a third consecutive elite season last year, recording 47 saves in 50 tries to go with a shiny 1.21 ERA that meshed well with his 1.39 FIP. He struck out 103 batters, issued only 18 walks, and served up only three home runs in 67 innings. You could easily argue that the 28-year-old was the league’s best closer.

The Nats and Rays talk trade, Jesus Montero transitions to first, and the Twins eye Cuban free agents.

Twins eyeing two players at Cuban showcase
Infielder Aledmys Diaz and right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne, two Cuban free agents who have been (or will soon be) cleared to sign with major-league teams, will hold a showcase today. The Twins will be one of the teams in attendance.

Rumor Roundup: Failures to Communicate

3

Daniel Rathman

The teams and remaining free agents that still seem not to be talking.

No recent contact between Indians, Ubaldo Jimenez
The Indians tendered Ubaldo Jimenez a qualifying offer. The right-hander turned it down. Since then, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the sides have barely spoken.

Rumor Roundup: Plenty of Arms Available

1

Daniel Rathman

The Orioles keep searching for a starter, A.J. Burnett and Ryan Madson remain available, and the Pirates look for first-base help.

Pirates dissatisfied with current first-base situation
If the season started today, the Pirates would have Gaby Sanchez splitting time with a left-handed first baseman, most likely either Andrew Lambo or Chris McGuiness. According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, in the eyes of general manager Neal Huntington, that won’t do.

Cafardo wrote on Sunday that there is “mutual interest” between the Pirates and Kendrys Morales, who declined a qualifying offer from the Mariners and hasn’t found many (any?) suitors on the open market. Morales’ agent, Scott Boras, isn’t afraid to drag free agents into March—as he showed last offseason with Kyle Lohse—but the pressure could turn up as Opening Day nears, because the first baseman turned down $14.1 million on his agent’s advice.

Rumor Roundup: Atlanta's Extension Spree

1

Daniel Rathman

The Braves talk two more extensions, and the latest updates on bullpens around baseball.

Braves hope to secure extensions for Andrelton Simmons, Julio Teheran
General manager Frank Wren has been busy in recent days, locking up Jason Heyward through his arbitration years and Freddie Freeman to an eight-year, $135 million hitch that represents the largest outlay in franchise history. Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes that Wren isn’t done yet.

Rumor Roundup: Examining the Market

4

Daniel Rathman

Updates on likely landing spots for Stephen Drew, Fernando Rodney, Bronson Arroyo, and Jose Lobaton.

Three teams have “strong interest” in Fernando Rodney
All but one of the pitchers who spent the 2013 season as their teams’ closers know where they will be playing this year. The exception is Fernando Rodney, who appears certain to move on from the Rays—now that they’ve added Grant Balfour and Heath Bell—but does not yet know where free agency will take him.

The hard-throwing right-hander, who turns 37 on March 18, has secured only one multi-year deal to this point in his career: a two-year, $11 million contract that came back to bite the Angels before he moved on to Tampa Bay. Rodney earned $2 million in 2012 on a one-year pact with the Rays, who exercised a club option to retain him for $2.5 million last year.

Rumor Roundup: What Can Yoon Do for You?

3

Daniel Rathman

Suk-Min Yoon and Carlos Marmol draw interest, and the Rays sort out potential replacements for Jeremy Hellickson.

Rangers interested in Korean free agent Suk-Min Yoon
Korean free agent Suk-Min Yoon, a 27-year-old right-hander who pitched for the Kia Tigers last year, has been a forgotten man this offseason, but he could provide a boost to the back of a team’s rotation or bullpen. Clubs unwilling to shell out big bucks for Ubaldo Jimenez or Ervin Santana might view him as a desirable option as the winter winds down.

Rumor Roundup: Scoping Out the Less Expensive Starters

2

Daniel Rathman

The latest on the cheaper free agent starters still out there.

Diamondbacks could enter the slow-developing Bronson Arroyo market
After failing to secure a frontline starter to lead their 2014 rotation, the Diamondbacks might be setting their sights a little lower: According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, general manager Kevin Towers is now eyeing Bronson Arroyo.

Rumor Roundup: Orioles Adding Arms?

1

Daniel Rathman

The Orioles hope to sign two pitchers, and the Diamondbacks might be about to get richer.

The Orioles’ plan: two arms in two weeks
Orioles pitchers and catchers are required to report to the team’s spring training facility in Sarasota, Florida, by February 13. According to Andrew Rickli of SportsReel Boston, if Dan Duquette has his way, that group will include two newcomers by the time everyone heads south.
