Rumor Roundup: The Ideas That Dayton Moore Toys With

3

Chris Mosch

Where the Royals might look for offense, where Jon Lester will find enough suitors to start a bidding war, and why Dan Haren might retire.

Billy Butler is headed west for Oakland and Nori Aoki is reportedly seeking a three-year deal on the open market. For the Royals, this means that if they aren’t willing to pony up for the Japanese outfielder, they’ll find themselves with two bat-first positions to fill one year after finishing last in the American League in True Average.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported yesterday that with Butler in Kansas City’s rearview mirror, the club is expected to focus on Torii Hunter for the free outfield spot. Ervin Santana and Francisco Liriano are the reported targets on the starting pitcher market.

Rumor Roundup: Are the Marlins Stanton Pat?

3

Chris Mosch

Why more rumors are popping up in Miami, and where Alexei Ramirez might go.

Marlins not done after extending Stanton?
Even after giving Giancarlo Stanton the richest contract in professional sports history, the Marlins might still have some financial flexibility, at least in the short-term future.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark wrote yesterday that Stanton’s record contract with the Marlins is heavily backloaded, paying him $107 million over the first six years of the deal and $218 million over the next seven if he chooses not to opt out. His reasoning for structuring his contract in such a way appears to be the desire for the Marlins to have enough financial flexibility to build a contending team before his opt-out clause in 2020.

Rumor Roundup: Filling First Base

6

Daniel Rathman

The Astros and Mets create rumors at first base, and the A's try to pad out their injury-depleted rotation.

Astros “calling around” about available first-base types
After releasing long-ago top prospect Brett Wallace last week, the Astros are in the hunt for depth at first base, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

Rumor Roundup: Drew to Detroit?

4

Daniel Rathman

The Tigers and Stephen Drew could help each other out, and the Royals come close to picking a fifth starter.

Could the Tigers and Stephen Drew rescue each other?
News surfaced over the past couple of days that Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias could spend most of the 2014 season on the shelf with long-term injuries to both of his shins. Detroit’s only internal replacement is Hernan Perez, who turns 23 on March 26 and did little at the plate in a 71-plate-appearance sample last year.

Rumor Roundup: Competition in Coors

5

Daniel Rathman

The Rockies try to settle on a center fielder, and the Yankees consider moving a catcher.

Rockies’ center-field competition a four-horse race
Most teams that have openings in their starting lineup are holding spring training competitions for two players or, in some cases, three. The Rockies? They’ve got four players contending to be manager Walt Weiss’ primary center fielder.

Rumor Roundup: A New Challenger

2

Just when it looked like Ervin Santana would sign with Baltimore or Toronto, a new team's entrance song starts playing.

Tigers’ left-field plans up in the air after Andy Dirks injury
When the Tigers traded Prince Fielder to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler earlier this offseason, they paved the way for Miguel Cabrera to slide across the diamond to first base and for top prospect Nick Castellanos to supplant him at the hot corner. Without the swap, Castellanos might have spent his first full big-league season as a left fielder.

Rumor Roundup: Santana Signing Soon?

7

Daniel Rathman

Catching you up on the weekend's conflicting reports about Ervin Santana, Shane Victorino's switch-hitting decision, and White Sox trade rumors.

Ervin Santana might be in a rush to sign; or, maybe not
FOX Sports baseball insiders Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi got some conflicting information over the weekend. Rosenthal heard that Ervin Santana was itching to join a club and could settle for a one-year deal to get down to spring training as soon as possible. Morosi, on the other hand, was told that Santana might “wait days” before accepting an offer.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes had more concrete news on the Santana front: He wrote on Saturday that the right-hander has two offers on the table that would essentially match the qualifying offer from the Royals that Santana rejected last fall. The Blue Jays would hand him $14 million for the 2014 season, while the Orioles’ bid was at $13 million with incentives that could at least bump the value up to the $14.1 million paycheck he turned down.

Rumor Roundup: A.J. Griffin Cuts His Cutter

2

Daniel Rathman

An Oakland arm changes his arsenal, and Billy Butler dusts off his glove.

A.J. Griffin cuts his cutter
Some of the most interesting stories to come out of spring training surround players who make material changes and are open about them with the media. A.J. Griffin, who ate 200 innings for the Athletics last year but served up 36 home runs along the way, is one of those players.

Rumor Roundup: A Trio of Infield Updates

0

News from spring training on Mike Carp, the Dodgers' second-base battle, and Atlanta's Tommy La Stella.

Brewers, Pirates scouting Red Sox—specifically Mike Carp
Boston Globe national baseball writer Nick Cafardo heard over the weekend that the Brewers and Pirates have sent scouts to Fort Myers, Florida, to watch the Red Sox in Grapefruit League action. According to Cafardo, both clubs may be eyeing Mike Carp.

Rumor Roundup: An Infield Fix for the Yankees?

1

Daniel Rathman

The Yankees might deal from depth to fix a hole, Brian Dozier wants to stay in Minnesota, and more.

Yankees could trade a catcher for an infielder or reliever
Yes, you read that correctly: The team that gave Chris Stewart 340 plate appearances behind the dish last year now has a surplus at the catcher position. According to George A. King III of the New York Post, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is considering parting with one of his homegrown backstops for depth at a shallower position.
