Rumor Roundup: The Ace Chase, the Rays' Face, and Some Chase Waste

0

Chris Mosch

Headley could benefit from Ramirez and Sandoval coming off the market, Lester is still expected to end up back in Boston, and the Rays might be zeroing in on a skipper.

Indians to get in on the Chase Headley sweepstakes?
The general consensus is that the Indians defense was awful last season. They ranked 25th in defensive efficiency and finished dead last in both DRS and UZR.

One of the players responsible for Cleveland’s defensive woes was third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, who cost the Indians over seven runs on defense by FRAA and graded out as even worse by other metrics. Despite Chisenhall’s breakout season at the plate, Cleveland appears to be looking to upgrade defensively at the hot corner as they are “among several teams who have shown an interest” in Chase Headley, according to MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince.

Rumor Roundup: Revenge is a Dish Best Served Immediately

2

Daniel Rathman

The Giants could get back at the Red Sox, who might also be in the mix for Cole Hamels. Meanwhile, John Jaso might soon have access to cheap prescription pills.

Could Giants pivot to Jon Lester?

Pablo Sandoval has shipped up to Boston, opening up both the third-base position in San Francisco and some $20 million in the club’s annual budget for 2015-2019. But according to San Francisco Chronicle beat writer Hank Schulman, the Giants might not use their newfound financial wiggle room to replace the Panda at the hot corner:

The Yankees are looking at top setup men, the Panda might be moving soon, and Matt Joyce is available. Would his power be part of the package?

Yankees eyeing Jason Grilli as Plan B
After fanning 96 batters in 64 innings as the Yankees closer in 2014, David Robertson is in line for a hefty payday. Sources told WFAN beat reporter Sweeny Murti that the 29-year-old can expect to receive $13 million a year for either three or four years, for a total outlay of $39-52 million.

Plus: The Phillies might have moved on from a Cuban slugger, and the Nationals have multiple starters they could trade.

Phillies no longer covet Yasmany Tomas?
Along with news from CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman that the Cuban slugger might head to San Diego for next month’s Winter Meetings comes this nugget from MLB.com’s Paul Hagen: the Phillies, once perceived as the favorites to land Tomas, may be cooling on the idea.

Rumor Roundup: The Ideas That Dayton Moore Toys With

Where the Royals might look for offense, where Jon Lester will find enough suitors to start a bidding war, and why Dan Haren might retire.

Billy Butler is headed west for Oakland and Nori Aoki is reportedly seeking a three-year deal on the open market. For the Royals, this means that if they aren’t willing to pony up for the Japanese outfielder, they’ll find themselves with two bat-first positions to fill one year after finishing last in the American League in True Average.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported yesterday that with Butler in Kansas City’s rearview mirror, the club is expected to focus on Torii Hunter for the free outfield spot. Ervin Santana and Francisco Liriano are the reported targets on the starting pitcher market.

Rumor Roundup: Are the Marlins Stanton Pat?

3

Chris Mosch

Why more rumors are popping up in Miami, and where Alexei Ramirez might go.

Marlins not done after extending Stanton?
Even after giving Giancarlo Stanton the richest contract in professional sports history, the Marlins might still have some financial flexibility, at least in the short-term future.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark wrote yesterday that Stanton’s record contract with the Marlins is heavily backloaded, paying him $107 million over the first six years of the deal and $218 million over the next seven if he chooses not to opt out. His reasoning for structuring his contract in such a way appears to be the desire for the Marlins to have enough financial flexibility to build a contending team before his opt-out clause in 2020.

Rumor Roundup: Filling First Base

6

Daniel Rathman

The Astros and Mets create rumors at first base, and the A's try to pad out their injury-depleted rotation.

Astros “calling around” about available first-base types
After releasing long-ago top prospect Brett Wallace last week, the Astros are in the hunt for depth at first base, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

Rumor Roundup: Drew to Detroit?

4

Daniel Rathman

The Tigers and Stephen Drew could help each other out, and the Royals come close to picking a fifth starter.

Could the Tigers and Stephen Drew rescue each other?
News surfaced over the past couple of days that Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias could spend most of the 2014 season on the shelf with long-term injuries to both of his shins. Detroit’s only internal replacement is Hernan Perez, who turns 23 on March 26 and did little at the plate in a 71-plate-appearance sample last year.

Rumor Roundup: Competition in Coors

5

Daniel Rathman

The Rockies try to settle on a center fielder, and the Yankees consider moving a catcher.

Rockies’ center-field competition a four-horse race
Most teams that have openings in their starting lineup are holding spring training competitions for two players or, in some cases, three. The Rockies? They’ve got four players contending to be manager Walt Weiss’ primary center fielder.

Rumor Roundup: A New Challenger

2

Daniel Rathman

Just when it looked like Ervin Santana would sign with Baltimore or Toronto, a new team's entrance song starts playing.

Tigers’ left-field plans up in the air after Andy Dirks injury
When the Tigers traded Prince Fielder to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler earlier this offseason, they paved the way for Miguel Cabrera to slide across the diamond to first base and for top prospect Nick Castellanos to supplant him at the hot corner. Without the swap, Castellanos might have spent his first full big-league season as a left fielder.
