On the Beat: Catching Up at the Winter Meetings

1

John Perrotto

Checking in on John Farrell, Adam LaRoche, Justin Upton, Ron Gardenhire, Robin Ventura, Bo Porter, the Brewers, the Rangers, the Rockies, the Dodgers, the Giants, the Cubs' bullpen, and the WBC.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—John Farrell knows the Boston baseball scene. He was the Red Sox' pitching coach for four seasons (from 2007-10) before serving a two-year stint as the Blue Jays' manager. Thus, he understands the scrutiny all Red Sox’ managers are under in New England.

Updates from the Winter Meetings, touching on Alex Rodriguez, R.A. Dickey, James Loney, Aroldis Chapman, the World Baseball Classic, the Blue Jays, the Athletics, and the Royals.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Brian Cashman is either the eternal optimist or a pretty good fibber. Either way, the Yankees general manager downplayed the idea that his team could be without the game's highest-paid player for as much as half of next season.

Black Friday is coming up, and many AL clubs will be scouring the market for free-agent bargains and potential trades.

Last week, we looked at the wish lists for National League clubs now that the Hot Stove season has heated up in force. This time, let's look at what American League teams are trying to acquire this offseason:

On the Beat: NL Shopping Lists

20

John Perrotto

What's on Santa's list for the recently-gutted Marlins? Will the Diamondbacks trade Justin Upton to fill multiple voids?

Workers were putting up the tree at a local restaurant the other day, and it was the first sure sign that it was that time of the year. Then, a few days later, the Marlins lit enough Yule logs to create a fire sale and, sure enough, the Christmas season was officially upon us. With that in mind, let's take a look at the shopping lists of the 15 National League clubs. We'll even look at what the Marlins might be looking for, though if Santa Claus is a true fan of competitive balance, he will put a large lump of coal in owner Jeffrey Loria’s stocking.

On the Beat: The All-Major League Baseball Team

7

John Perrotto

Sure, there's an All-Star team--two of them, even--but those don't compare to the OTB All-MLB team.

The stolen base has quietly been making a comeback in recent seasons. Teams might not be running like they did three decades ago in the world of cookie-cutter stadiums and artificial turf, but managers have been showing more of a willingness to press the issue on the bases.

On the Beat: Hot Stove Stories

9

John Perrotto

With the World Series over, here are five big stories for Hot Stove season, and an interview with Brian Sabean.

The offseason is here and the coals of the Hot Stove are already being stoked with trades, decisions on contract options, and potential free agents being re-signed. The furnace will crank up another notch when free agency begins Saturday and the general managers' meetings take place next week in Palm Springs, California. So, let's not waste any time; let’s take a look at five off-season subjects that figure to create some buzz:

The Giants have faced elimination multiple times in the postseason, yet they're three wins away from a championship.

Javier Lopez is one of the brightest and most articulate major-leaguers. The Giants left-handed reliever holds a psychology degree from the University of Virginia and, though he majored in a liberal arts subject, he understands sabermetrics and how they can be used to help build a championship team. Lopez was a member of the 2007 world champion Red Sox.

On the Beat: Making the Tigers Roar

2

John Perrotto

Dave Dombrowski has pulled off a pair of stellar moves to upgrade Detroit's pitching staff, which has helped the team to two consecutive ALCS series.

Most general managers say that starting pitching remains the most difficult commodity to acquire. That would be hard to tell, though, by what Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has done the past two seasons.

Joe Girardi is finding a balance between resting his veterans and plugging holes for injured players.

One of the easiest jobs in baseball would seemingly be writing out the Yankees' lineup. With the game's biggest payroll, three future Hall of Famers at the top of the lineup, and All-Stars filling out the other six spots, it would seem Joe Girardi needs nothing more than a rubber stamp.

On the Beat: Planning a Play-In Strategy

17

John Perrotto

The Braves aren't huge fans of the wild card play-in game, but they have a strategy for their upcoming meeting with the Cardinals. Also, a few minutes with Robin Ventura and Chris Speier.

The Braves will make history Friday when they host the Cardinals in what is officially called the National League Wild Card Game but has is also being alternately called the Single-Elimination Game, The Knockout Game, The Preliminary Round Game, The Play-In Game, and The Coin Flip Game, among others.

Former Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy recently revealed he was gay, a difficult step in the professional sports environment.

The best thing about Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania is their small-town qualities. People are generally friendly, hospitable to strangers, and there to lend a hand in time of need. In the 22 years I covered the Pirates as a newspaperman, I encountered countless players who felt as if they were being banished to the end of the Earth when they were first traded to Pittsburgh but were emotional about leaving when they were inevitably traded.

The Tigers came into the season as favorites to win the AL Central, yet they find themselves looking up to the White Sox in the standings.

Jim Leyland watches the scoreboard every night. Yet, to the Tigers manager, that isn't a big deal. He starts watching the scoreboard on Opening Day.
