Minor League Update: Games of June 7th

7

Steve Givarz

Frankie Mejia, Brent Honeywell, Dakota Hudson and more on today's MLU.

Hitter of the Day:

Francisco Mejia, C, Cleveland Indians (Double-A, Akron): 4-5, 3 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, BB (DH)
As we have talked about many, many times here, it is hard evaluating catchers. Success can exist in two spectrums. You could be the all-star caliber defender and just hope to hit enough (ex. Reese McGuire), or you could be the all-star caliber hitter and just hope to be a capable enough defender (ex. Jorge Alfaro). Mejia has a chance to be both, which is frightening.

Minor League Update: Games of June 2nd-4th

10

Mark Anderson

Eloy Jimenez, Rafael Devers, Bo Bichette, and a guy named Telmito.

Prospect of the Weekend:

Michael Gettys, OF, Padres (High-A, Lake Elsinore): 9-12, 4 R, 2B, 4 HR, 6 RBI, BB, 2 K.
Gettys is still a legitimate defensive contributor in center field thanks to plus speed, good instincts, and a huge arm, but his bat continues to hold him back from true top prospect status. Even on the heels of a monster weekend, including three home runs on Friday, Gettys has still taken a step back in a return trip to High-A this season. There’s solid power here, but he’s also fanned 81 times in just 54 games, without the walks to make that tolerable at higher levels. Gettys still has considerable development remaining and I’m afraid he’s always going to end up relying on his glove to carry the load while his bat comes and goes.

Minor League Update: Games of June 1

8

Wilson Karaman

Notes on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Lewis Brinson, Eddy Martinez, Scott Kingery, Steven Brault, and C.J. Cron (yes, C.J. Cron).

Hitter of the Day:

Scott Kingery, 2B, Philadelphia Phillies (Double-A Reading): 4-4, BB, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB
There were eight homers hit in the Reading bandbox yesterday, including Kingery’s Eastern League-leading 17th. He’s hitting .462 over his last 10 now, and looks like someone pretty desperately in need of a promotion to Triple A. There’s average regular potential here regardless of the home-field inflation.

Minor League Update: Games of May 30

9

Steve Givarz

Notes on Tyler Hill, Tyler Mahle, Fernando Romero, Johan Mieses, Garrett Whitley, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Tyler Hill, OF, Boston Red Sox (Low-A, Greenville): 4-4, 3 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB (DH)
A quality athlete, Hill exploded on the scene last year with a quality performance in Short-Season Lowell. Now in full-season ball, Hill has brought his impressive bat speed, speed, and emerging raw power with him. While still learning the difficulties of the OF (he was a C to start his career), his athleticism and speed give him a chance to be average defensively.

Minor League Update: Games of May 25

7

Wilson Karaman

Notes on Michael Chavis, Lucas Giolito, Eloy Jimenez, Lewis Thorpe, Ian Anderson, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Michael Chavis, 3B, Boston Red Sox (High-A Salem): 5-9, 2 BB, 3 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K, E
It’s tough to overstate just how hot Chavis has been to start the season, as yesterday’s outburst in a double-header included his fifth multi-hit game in his last ten and raised his season’s line to .360/.440/.712 through 37 games. The former first-rounder started hot last year, too, before a thumb injury derailed his season. He’ll look to continue this round of early dominance after an inevitable promotion to Double A comes, likely on the sooner side of later at this rate.

Minor League Update: Games of May 24th

12

Steve Givarz

Notes on Monte Harrison, Mike Shawaryn, Austin Hays, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Austin Hays, OF, Baltimore Orioles (High-A, Frederick): 3-8, 3 R, 3 HR, 3 RBI, K (DH)
The 2016 third-rounder displays average tools across the board and could be a sum of his parts average regular, as he gets the most out of his tools.

Minor League Update: Games of May 23rd

Steve Givarz

Gavin LaValley isn't merely a rejected character name from The OC. He's a prospect too.

Hitter of the Day:

Gavin LaValley, 1B, Cincinnati Reds (High-A, Daytona): 4-5, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K
Once a prominent football recruit, LaValley instead followed the diamond where he was a fourth-rounder in 2014. Featuring more hit than power, LaValley has good bat speed and an all-fields approach. The over the fence power is playing more than it has before, which is good. He will need that as he is confined to the cold-corner.

Minor League Update: Games of May 22nd

1

Steve Givarz

Notes on Cionel Perez, Miguel Andujar, Brett Cumberland, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Jose Marmolejos-Diaz, 1B, Washington Nationals (Double-A, Harrisburg): 5-6, 3 R, 2B, HR, 5 RBI
The Nationals Minor League Player of the year for both the 2015, and 2016 seasons, Jose is a natural hitter with a smooth left-handed stroke. While the power might not play to what you would expect it at 1B, his ability to hit and get on-base will surely find a way to the big leagues.
