Minor League Update: Games of August 1

3

Steve Givarz

Notes on Monte Harrison, Tyler Mahle, Dillon Peters, Tanner Houck, Ronald Acuna, Brent Rooker, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Monte Harrison, OF, Milwaukee Brewers (High-A, Carolina): 3-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Don’t worry if you have forgotten about Harrison these past couple years, he has been injured a lot. Don’t fret though, Craig Goldstein, myself, and many others have left seats on the bandwagon for you. One of the best athletes in the system, Harrison’s tools could rival that of Lewis Brinson’s, the only difference being that Brinson is two years older and in the majors.

Notes on Bo Bichette, Michel Baez, Franklin Barreto, MacKenzie Gore, Walker Buehler, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Bo Bichette, SS, Blue Jays (High-A, Dunedin): 4-4, 4 R, 2B, BB, 2 SB
With a four-hit night Bichette bumped his average up to .387 since moving to High-A, giving him a higher batting average than the impressive .384 he posted in Low-A earlier this year. I mean, it’s not the .427 he hit in rookie ball last year, but it’ll do.

Sixto Sanchez, Alec Hansen, Ronald Acuna, and Jose Siri and the hit streak that just won't quit.

Prospect of the Weekend:
Billy McKinney
, OF, Yankees (Triple-A, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre): 8-13, 7 R, 2 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, BB, 2 K.

To be completely honest, and I can’t really explain this, it’s been a little while since my prospect-oriented brain actually though about McKinney. It’s not as though I’ve abandoned any vision of him as a big-league hitter, but I just hadn’t thought about him in a while. Well, with a weekend like this, I should certainly rectify that and step back to look at where he could still fit into the Yankees’ future.

Minor League Update: Games of July 27

4

Wilson Karaman

Notes on Royce Lewis, Jon Duplantier, Ryan McMahon, Calvin Mitchell, Chase Vallot, and more.

Hitters of the Day:

The DSL Yankees: 21 R, 11 H, 21 BB, 9 K
I can’t stress enough how magical this box score is. First things first, they scored 19 of their 21 runs in one inning. Not a typo. All told, my dudes plated 21 on 11 hits, thanks to 21 freaking walks. Nobody in the entire lineup tallied more than two hits. They hit no home runs. They knocked only three extra base hits – all triples – in the entire game. They even gave up 13 just because they could! You could live through a million more healthcare votes and never see anything like this again.

A big night for minor league pitching...especially White Sox prospects.

Minor League Update: Games of July 25

Steve Givarz

Notes on J.D. Davis, Marcos Molina, Joey Wentz, Mitch Keller, Willie Calhoun, Franklin Barreto, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

J.D. Davis, 3B, Houston Astros (Triple-A, Fresno): 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI
With the glut of talented position players at the big league level, especially those playing 3B, there doesn’t seem to be room for Davis. Hence why he has been floated as a trade chip. The calling cards are plus in game power, and a 70 arm. Unfortunately I can’t add hit tool or 3B glove to that hand.

Minor League Update: Games of July 24

4

Steve Givarz

Notes on Ronald Acuna, Grant Holmes, Will Craig, Jhailyn Ortiz, Zack Collins, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Ronald Acuna, OF, Atlanta Braves (Triple-A, Gwinnett): 4-5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI
So Acuna started out in High-A at 19, aggressive, but he did well in 2016 so he could’ve used the challenge. Then he crushed that, was sent to Double-A for a real challenge, Acuna said, “I’ll just hit .326/.374/.520”. Then was sent to Triple-A…oh yea, he’s still 19.

Minor League Update: Games of July 20

6

Wilson Karaman

Notes on Brendan McKay, Michael Kopech, Tyler O’Neill, Walker Buehler, A.J. Reed, Ryan Mountcastle, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Oneil Cruz, SS/3B, Los Angeles Dodgers (Low-A Great Lakes): 5-5, 3 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI
Well, then. Cruz has undergone plenty of literal and figurative growing pains this year as he’s continued along on his journey to figure out how to consistently corral his 6-foot-6 frame. But games like yesterday’s offer a glimpse into the kind of impact talent that’s in there.

Minor League Update: Games of July 19

3

Steve Givarz

Notes on Mike Soroka, Mauricio Dubon, Willy Adames, Tyler Beede, Ronnie Dawson, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Ronnie Dawson, OF, Houston Astros (Low-A, Quad Cities): 3-4, 3 R, 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBI
With the build of an NFL linebacker, Dawson also has the power one would think an NFL linebacker would have if he played baseball. Dawson’s power is plus to better and is his primary carrying tool. He is an average runner, which is surprising given his size, but struggles defensively, and his swing has lots of holes to exploit.

Minor League Update: Games of July 18

1

Steve Givarz

Notes on Tyler O’Neill, Keegan Akin, Miguel Andujar, Ryan Boldt, Chance Sisco, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Tyler O'Neill, OF, Seattle Mariners (Triple-A, Tacoma): 4-8, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K (DH)
One of the few remaining Mariners prospects left, O’Neill has gone somewhat backwards since a strong Double-A performance in 2016. While he might never hit like that again, O’Neill does do a lot of good things! He hits big home runs, will play an average right field, and has a plus arm.

Minor League Update: Games of July 16

10

Steve Givarz

Notes on Jason Martin, Nick Fanti, Harrison Bader, C.J. Chatham, Lucas Sims, and more.

Hitter of the Day:

Jason Martin, OF, Houston Astros (Double-A, Corpus Christi): 4-4, R, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI
A fringe-average player all around, Martin has struggled this season, comparatively to what he did last year. He has been passed over in the organization by other OF’s, but can still fill out a role as an outfielder who can play CF and steal some bags.
