While Willie Hernandez's 1984 season was awe-inspiring, and deserves to be placed on a pedestal somewhere, I don't think it is the greatest single season by a lefty closer. Consider Billy Wagner's 1999 numbers:

Do you know when next year's book will be published? Will it be available again for advance purchase from Amazon? Also, will your group of authors be posting any analysis of the Arizona Fall League on the web site?

I just finished reading your article about umpires and stolen-base percentage. I just want to point out one factor that you did not consider in your article which throws all your statistics out the window. You did not mention whether they made the right call or not. If Chuck Meriwether called out 41 of 55 base stealers and he was correct on every one of them, then there is no bias. It would be better for you to look at which umpires make the correct call as opposed to those who don't get the call right as much.

Where are Vizquel and Ordonez on your list of top shortstops? And 20-30 runs possible difference from one position is high, isn't it? Can the range be that large?

As far as Tony Perez's Hall of Fame credentials go, here's another way to look at it:

I enjoyed your idea about a weekly schedule for pitchers, although I'm not convinced. I just don't see it becoming a norm because it would be hard to groom youngsters in this fashion and I think limiting pitch counts would just be an effective way of keeping your starters healthy, though the all-closer staff is very exciting!

Your response to the mailbag question on umpires included a thought I've been having regarding the use of technology in calling games.

Not that I care about increased offense (I love baseball all the same), but no one in baseball looks at the strike zone, or how it is called. It's obvious some umpires have a more liberal strike zone than others, and I was wondering if any of you know of any empirical studies done on different umpires.

You know, you're absolutely right when you said that the Cubs should have been punished because of the lax security around the bullpen, which could have prevented the brawl. You're right the Cubs shouldn't allow their fans to get hammered beyond comprehension (maybe instituting a "No Beer after the Seventh Inning" rule at Wrigley would work). You're right that this brawl shouldn't affect a playoff race, and it would certainly suck if this became a regular occurrence at Wrigley, where fans tried to goad players into charging into the stands, to get them suspended. And you're right that the Cubs should increase security around such areas where the fans and opposing players are so close to each other and take some responsibility for what happened.

The recent injury to Rico Brogna highlights a baseball development that, until now, has been only surmised: Terry Francona and the Phillies front office are hopped up on goofballs. Are they waiting for Ron Gant to break his leg before announcing that Kevin Sefcik will now be the full-time starter because he can save eight runs a game purely by virtue of his glove?

I just finished reading an essay in George Will's book, "Bunts" concerning the '41 season and the rivalry between Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio. Will, along with most other historical and modern analysts of the '41 season, clearly feels that Dimaggio's 56 game hitting streak was a "greater" achievement than Williams's '41 season (when he hit .406 and I believe won the triple crown).
