Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week Nine

Helping you set your fantasy rotation for next week with a look at the two-start pitchers.

Welcome to the starting pitcher planner, where every Friday I’ll be taking a look at the pitchers slated for two turns in the upcoming week. The hope is that the planner can help guide lineup and FAAB decisions that need to be made over the weekend. Of course, my information isn’t perfect and I don’t have a crystal ball. Rain, injuries, and teams reshuffling between when I write and Monday’s first pitch will definitely happen. If new information comes to light after we publish, I’ll try to tackle it in the comments. Feel free to beat me to it if you have any info, and I’ll be glad to offer my opinion there if you want it.

Let’s get some ground rules out the way before getting started. The pitchers will be split by league and then by category. Here are some general thoughts about the categories:

Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week 26

10

Wilson Karaman

Helping you set your fantasy rotation for the final week with a look at the two-start pitchers.

Well, we’ve done it. We’ve reached the end of the line for another fantasy season, and hopefully you’re in a position where this column is still relevant to you because you’re in a dogfight for a title or three. I will say that as much as I enjoy writing this column, this week is my least favorite of the year, and not for sentimental reasons. I don’t like writing this one because it’s an utter and total crapshoot as to whether scheduled two-start guys will actually end up making both turns, not to mention what kind of lineups they’ll face if and when they do. You’ll have cases where a borderline starter has a difficult-looking slate of games on paper, but then game day will come and he’ll face six dudes fresh off the bus from Double-A while Bryce Harper sits on a bucket and spits sunflower seeds all night. Defensive numbers are pretty much out the window, as are all stats related to recent lineup performance.

So, these recommendations will be more heavily focused on the pitchers themselves with significantly less attention paid to contextual factors than I’d otherwise incorporate. I’ll also give more weight to the first matchup, as the back half of the scoring period will bear the brunt of the uncertainty.

Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week 25

6

Wilson Karaman

Helping you set your fantasy rotation for next week with a look at the two-start pitchers.

It’s our penultimate Planner of the year, and unfortunately, it’s a doozy. Out of a relatively light 37 total two-start options, a full 16 are completely unstartable, with another half-dozen or so teetering ever-so-marginally in the “consider” pile. AL-only managers get the lion’s share of value this week with four of the best arms in the league set to take the ball twice, while things in the senior circuit get ugly fast.

Before we dive in I’ll reiterate my note from the last couple of weeks that changes to the probables happen much more regularly this month, as teams look to save innings, manipulate matchups, and give longer looks to young guys. So we’ll start to see guys jump on and drop off this list after it goes to print much more regularly, and I’m happy to address any and all changes as they come up in the comments below.

Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week 24

12

Wilson Karaman

Helping you set your fantasy rotation for next week with a look at the two-start pitchers.

I don’t think I can remember a more unbalanced week between the leagues than what we’re looking at in Week 24. We have just 14 measly options to pick through in the senior circuit this week. Arizona and Colorado are both set to rock six-man rotations, and while the Mets are tenuously scheduled to run ace Jacob deGrom twice, I haven’t heard Scot Boras weigh in yet, so that may still change before you set your lineup. The AL, meanwhile, boasts a stout 23, with just the second two-start option for the Angels currently off the board.

Before we dive in I’ll reiterate my note from last week that changes to the probable schedule happen much more regularly this month as teams look to save innings, manipulate matchups, and give longer looks to young guys. So we’ll start to see guys jump on and drop off this list after it goes to print much more regularly, and I’m happy to address any and all changes as they come up in the comments below.

Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week 23

6

Wilson Karaman

Helping you set your fantasy rotation for next week with a look at the two-start pitchers.

It is a big, deep week of two-start options this period, with 23 National League options and 20 in the American. The former features a much more straightforward distribution, including a whole bunch of out-of-the-gate disqualifications, while the AL is as muddled as you’ll see in a given week. We’re still awaiting Oakland naming a starter for their would-be two-start slot (HOU, @TEX), while the Astros will continue rolling with a six-man rotation in order to keep its arms fresh. That’s a real bummer for managers who will be in the thick of head-to-head playoff matchups, as Mike Fiers would have lined up nicely in that slot @OAK and @LAA.

Speaking of keeping arms fresh, it’s increasingly more important than usual to understand that the schedule of probable starters is subject to change. We’re into September now, meaning bigger rosters and weary starting pitchers. Teams will start shuffling their rotations at the drop of a hat to give guys extra time or to get a look at another young arm, so we’ll start to see guys jump on and drop off this list post-publication that much ore frequently. I’m happy to address any and all evolution in the comments below as requested.
