Collateral Damage Daily for April 29
Jake Westbrook’s MRI showed a strained right oblique. He is expected to miss another start or two but is expected to return this season. … Xavier Nady did some light jogging yesterday and might be able to pinch-hit in a few days. … Jose Altuve is out of the lineup with a strained lower left abdominal muscle. He is day-to-day, but these injuries can linger. … Chris Parmelee is day-to-day with right groin soreness. … Jered Weaver is expected to start on Thursday after throwing a bullpen session yesterday. … Corey Hart’s soreness is more in the plantar fascia than the ankle. He is still day-to-day. … Sean Burnett threw a bullpen session and felt fine yesterday. He will likely need to wait until tomorrow to be cleared. … Jordan Schafer re-injured his separated left shoulder and is day-to-day. … Carlos Quentin left last night’s game early with right knee soreness. … Ramon Hernandez is day-to-day with a left hamstring strain. … Mark Teixeira will miss about 10 to 14 days for his aggravated left calf strain.
- Lance Berkman gave it a valiant effort, but his knees just could not handle the rigors any more. He will undergo season-ending surgery (possibly career-ending) on his right knee. He’s scheduled to have surgery on the meniscus, but surgeons are going to check the articular cartilage, too. Joe Strauss noted that the Cardinals disputed the assessment of a compromised ACL. The ACL, if compromised, can be a significant contributing factor to meniscal troubles.
- The Astros released Francisco Cordero after it was apparent he was not going to return in 2012. Originally placed on the DL with a sprained toe, he developed right shoulder soreness and was not able to recover quickly enough. He was disastrous while he was on the active roster. Cordero missed 39 days with the Astros after he was part of the 10-player deal this summer.
- Clay Hensley is expected to return from the DL today after spending 15 days recovering from a strained right groin. The Giants hope physical therapy will help with Hensley’s pitch location.
