BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 You'd like to be able to pinpoint the precise moment at which Ed Yarnall's career jumped the shark. While seeing him don an Orix Blue Wave uniform might seem to be the obvious candidate, the truth is that there really isn't one. Here's what we wrote about him in BP 2000:

"He's going to be special. Yarnall throws four pitches for strikes, hides the ball well and has a major league fastball. Like many young left-handers, his control can be a problem, but that's the only negative here. He even has a good health record and hasn't been worked that hard. Yarnall could be the best left-hander in the league by 2002."

Most of the substance of that comment still holds today; it's the spin that would be different. Yarnall's control has never been major league-caliber. That might be the only negative, but it's a really big, flashing red negative, and it's not one that he's going to be able to overcome. You can take a 23-year-old hitting prospect who hits 40 doubles and 15 homers when he's 23 and project with some reasonable certainty what he's going to do when he's 27; you can't do that with a pitching prospect. Pitchers aren't subject to a smooth, gentle aging curve so much as they are a scary, probabilistic step function. A certain percentage of them improve, but they do so suddenly and dramatically, while others like Yarnall flatline for years at a time.
