2013 Another member of the Royals 2012 Tommy John Quartet, Wood was shelved in spring training with elbow soreness and finally had the surgery in late May. When healthy, his fastball lived in the mid-90s, and once he learned how to apply some movement to the pitch, his strikeouts increased appreciably. Waived in November as the Royals set their 40-man roster, he was claimed by the Indians.
2012 Although Wood packs 95 mph heat, until 2011 he’s never been much of a strikeout pitcher. In the past, he relied primarily on a fastball/slider combo, but last season added a fastball with a little more sinking action. That led to a huge increase in his strikeout rate and a modest uptick in ground balls, and made him a useful pitcher out of Kansas City’s bullpen. He continues to walk enough batters to keep things "interesting," though.
2011 Wood's strikeout rates don't scream "95-mph gas," but he boasts impressive velocity nonetheless. He hurls his heater for strikes at an average rate and doesn't get many misses with it, but he does use it to pick up a lot of ground balls (1.5 grounders per fly ball) and groundouts (22 percent). Wood throws a fastball/slider combo almost exclusively, with an occasional changeup thrown in. If his slider were more consistent, he would be able to punch out more hitters and employ it more often, but its suspect nature is part of the reason for his having ended up in the pen after bouncing between dominating and dominated as a starter in the minors. There is reason to hope that he'll become a useful reliever, but his future hinges on that slider.
2010 Wood drives scouts (and probably the Royals) crazy, because if you catch him on the right day, he looks like a future big-league starter, whereas on other days observers are left wondering if he's even qualified to pitch at Double-A. Assets include a plus-velocity fastball, a solid curve, and an above-average changeup, but he's just maddeningly inconsistent. Every team keeps guys with Wood's kind of physical tools around, hoping they'll get it, but few do.
2009 Wood experienced the same rude hospitality from the Texas League that Pimentel did; also like Pimentel, he has terrific raw stuff, with a plus heater that reaches into the mid-90s. Finding a reliable third offering has been the problem: in 2007 he showcased a good power curveball yet was inconsistent with his changeup, while last year his off-speed pitch came forward, but the breaker regressed. If Wood manages to saddle both at the same time, he could experience a breakout. If not, he might be bullpen-bound.
2008 Wood fell to the third round in the 2006 draft after shin splints led to a disappointing junior year at Georgia Tech. He then missed the first half of the 2007 season with back problems. When healthy, he mixes a mid-90s fastball with a very effective changeup, and he was healthy in the Hawaii Winter League, striking out 57 batters in 33 innings. The numbers aren't much to look at now, but he could move very quickly.

2010-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bradford, great post on KCSportsRadio.com today about the Royals' bullpen. Two-parter: do you see bullpen management in general moving away from specialization any time soon, and what short-term fix do you see for KC's bullpen, other than burning it down and starting over (after Soria)?
(BL from Bozeman, MT)
This year's pen can tread water if Cruz can become more consistent. His stuff still seems filthy to me. I'm looking forward to seeing Blake Wood come up after what I've heard about him following his conversion to relieving.

Seems like bullpen management moves more towards specialization with each passing season. For awhile, it seemed like the majority of managers were reluctant participants in that sea change. Now the managers I talk to refer to the importance of relievers having specific roles like it's always been that way. I have no evidence to make the claim, but I think the next pitcher-use revolution will involve an enterprising and brave skipper/gm combo going with a four-man rotation & strict pitch counts in the 85-90 range. It just makes sense to me to try something like that, but who has the cajones? (Bradford Doolittle)
2008-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Okay, cool. Thanks for the quick response. What do you make of Blake Wood? He wasn't really on the radar--as far as I can see--heading into this year, but he's pulled the neat trick of King 47 batters in 45.1 innings in AA. Does he project to be another starter that will hopefully make signing the likes of Brett Tomko unnecessary?
