BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Wilk is more pitchability than stuff, but his left-handedness and pinpoint control keep him relevant. With 252 innings of excellent Triple-A work under his belt, he doesnít have anything left to prove there, but there isnít a clear path to innings for him with Detroit yet either. He is a prototypical swing man/long man who can go four innings for a starter who leaves after one with an injury, or he can close out a 12-2 shellacking for a handful innings, saving the teamís late-inning relievers. He should learn the quickest route from Toledo to Detroit this year.
2012 A certifiable control freak, Wilk toted his bag of off-speed tricks to Comerica for a month of big-league meal money last summer. With a fastball that rarely breaks 90, his stuff is nothing special, but he doesnít give in to hitters, keeps his walks low, and isnít totally allergic to the punchout. Heíll compete for a swingman role this spring, and in a system known for its power arms Wilk is a refreshing change of pace.
2011 The Tigers are known for their unabashed man-crushes on power arms, yet Wilk continues to work his off-speed assortment up the organizational ladder. Command and deception are his calling cards, as he walked less than a batter per start, mixing in curveballs, changeups, and an upper-80s fastball to keep batters guessing and induce weak contact. Heíll start the year at Double-A, where the organization will be watching to learn whether more advanced batters can see the magicianís hand.
2010 Adam Wilk was an 11th-round pick last year who put up gaudy numbers in his pro debut; surprisingly for a low-minor lefty, he was much better against right-handers.

DateQuestionAnswer
2012-01-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now that Detroit has blown a gigantic wad on Prince Fielder, are they going to rely on Jacob Turner as their 5th starter? I don't see anyone else decent who is around to back him up. . . And, if Cabrera is really going to play 3B and Raburn 2B, who will DH? Is Andy Dirks a leading LF option with Delmon Young DHing?
(hotstatrat from Daydreamland)
They'll fall back on Adam Wilk or Duane Below if Turner isn't ready right off... Dirks should get a lot of time in left field, assuming Leyland doesn't develop an unhealthy Clete Thomas fixation. (Steven Goldman)
