2003 That projection is a wee bit optimistic. Wells is coming off of consecutive seasons where he’s gotten belted around worse than Eleanor Clift on The McLaughlin Group. His plunging strikeout rate hints that he’s gone around the league a few times too many, and the Twins reasonably chose not to pick up his option. He might be able to pull a Doug Jones and resurrect his career in the National League, but at his age, don’t bet on it.
2002 Wells is a nice guy to have somewhere in the pen. He can throw strikes, get people out without his best stuff, carry a significant workload, and is comfortable with a role in the middle of the bullpen. Bob Wells and pitchers like him may not get a lot of press, but they make their teammates and managers look awfully good.
2001 Last year, we wondered if Boomer had a specific skill as far as pitching with men on base. This year, despite his 11 blown saves, he once again stranded more than two-thirds of the runners he inherited. He came into 24 games with two or three men on base and didn’t allow a man to score in 13 of them. Compare that to Hawkins, who saw eight of those situations and didn't allow anyone to score in seven of them, and to Eddie Guardado, who inherited multiple runners 14 times and sent the opposition away disappointed nine times. Is Bob Wells good at this “ice water in his veins” thing or not? Whatever the case, he’s getting more opportunities. That isn’t meant as a putdown of Wells: he and the Twins have been good for each other.
2000 Here’s another guy who gets away from Lou Piniella and turns into a good reliever. This time, the non-news event took place in Minnesota. After Aguilera was traded, Wells was bumped up into Mike Trombley’s setup role. He was brought into any inning in which the opposition got runners aboard, and showed remarkable effectiveness pitching from the stretch. He stranded two-thirds of the runners he inherited--not a league-leading figure, but considering he inherited a lot of runners, not bad at all. Would you call that clutch pitching? Or a canny use of one journeyman’s specific skill? I don’t think it’s a skill that you can count on, but it worked in 1999 and it bears watching in 2000.
1999 Control pitcher whose extreme flyball tendencies did not mesh well with the Kingdome, not to mention with having Buhner in right. Released; could be an adequate eleventh man for a team in a big ballpark.
1998 Occasionally, if you hang around long enough in the minors, you get some face time in the majors. Bob Wells’ photo should probably be in the locker of at least a few dozen guys in the minors. You just gotta root for a guy like this. If given the shot, could have a much better year or two, if only he can quit throwing that bleedin’ meatball.
1997 Not all that good a pitcher, but going 12-7 should provide job security for some time. The trade for Fassero kills his chances of making the rotation, meaning the job of long man is his to lose. Given where his career was two years ago, Wells would answer the bullpen phone and fetch sunflower seeds from the clubhouse to stay in the major leagues.
