DateQuestionAnswer
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should I really gird my loins for a 32-130 Padres season? My loins can't take that kind of girdin'.
(Clyde from Pittsburgh)
Hey Clyde, thanks for the question. Coming into the season, the Padres had four or five legitimate big-league pitchers. Two of them (Edinson Volquez and Huston Street) have been terrible. Even after Sunday night's strong showing from Clayton Richard, their starters own the NL's highest ERA by a lot. It will be good to see Chase Headley back in the lineup this week, but his presence won't help a bad pitching staff. Unless the Padres find some guys who can get big-league hitters out, it's going to be a long season. (Geoff Young)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Geoff, how much more leeway would you give Edinson Volquez? My opinion, it's time to put him in the bullpen or trade him.
(matthewverygood from Los Angeles)
Hey Matt, as you know, Volquez is one of the most frustrating pitchers in baseball to watch. He can dominate for short periods, but the inevitable lapses of concentration and/or command kill his game. He has a great arm. Maybe a move to the bullpen would help. Of course, the Padres have precious few options for the rotation, so it won't happen. I'm not sure he'll fetch much in trade either. (Geoff Young)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)My buddy and I are trying to three-peat in our league. We're about 12 pts from first. We have a great offense, but we've been ravaged by injuries on the pitching side. We could make up a lot of ground if we added some strikeouts. Should we try to deal a bat for a high K guy or wait for our injured pitchers - namely Halladay and Morrow - to get well? Thanks!
(Liam from Williston, VT)
It's hard to say without knowing all of your league dynamics, but it seems like you have some offense to spare. Since Halladay and Morrow could potentially be out another month, and since guys don't usually just come out of nowhere to start striking people out, it sounds like you'd be well-advised to go get some Ks. Assuming your ratios are in order, guys in the Edinson Volquez mold might be appealing. (Derek Carty)
2012-02-23 11:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think will be the 'breakout' Padre this season?
(tomadamsphoto from Twitter)
That is a tough question. I think it'll be one of the guys who came over in the Mat Latos trade. Edinson Volquez hasn't made it through an entire season healthy since 2008 but he still misses bats and he's coming to a park where last year's gopheritis won't be as much of an issue. Even if Volquez doesn't return to his peak, he could be a pleasant surprise. (Geoff Young)
2012-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the move to SD, do you think Edinson Volquez will be a viable fantasy starter again (NL)? He seemed to show flashes at times last year and he is out of GABP.
(John from Indy)
Yes I do. As an NL-only pick, Volquez is a good guy to get. The park shift will be big, and as you said, he's shown flashes of being a good pitcher in the past. As long as he comes relatively cheap, that's a good gamble to take. (Derek Carty)
2011-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who won the Padres/Reds trade?
(Mikell from Chicago)
Edinson Volquez.

Also the Padres. (Sam Miller)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any insight into Edinson Volquez's first inning struggles followed by filthy dominance?
(John from New York)
It's weird, but some pitchers have to get into a game before they can really get their stuff going. I'm not sure what to make of Volquez's first-inning struggles, but I would be surprised if feel and comfort didn't play a role. (Jason Parks)
2010-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bronson Arroyo, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez, Homer Bailey, Travis Wood, Mike Leake, Matt Maloney, Sam LeCure, Aroldis Chapman. That's 9 guys for 5 rotation spots in Cincinnati. How can Jocketty best capitalize on that depth?
(RMR from Chicago)
A few of the brighter bulbs 'round these parts (where there isn't much call for cheddar, by the way)have made a few suggestions. IIRC, SG recommended they trade Volquez, while CK opted for shipping out Maloney, I think. Me, I'd find out what sort of a market there is for Mike Leake -- maybe he's already at his peak trade value. It's really, really hard to predict trades that actually get made, because you almost always look like you're way over- or under-valuing someone in retrospect. That being said, sitting on all that pitching is like sitting on a pot of gold, and Jocketty is sure to be a very popular man next week. (Ken Funck)
2010-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What will keep future pitchers who undergo TJ surgery from using HGH if they feel it will help them in recovery? Edinson Volquez essentially went unpunished, right?
(Goose from Chicago)
Well, to the degree that he did not have to miss any games, he went unpunished (also, the drug that Volquez was suspended for does not appear to have been HGH, but that's a technicality). But is suspension really even the biggest factor in the punishment? Remember, he lost all the income he would have earned during that time (about a third of his yearly salary) and he still has the stigma that attaches to PED violations. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jake Arrieta or Edinson Volquez for the rest of 2010?
(sharkey from MPLS)
Arrieta's K/BB ratio isn't inspiring much confidence, and he has to face the rest of the AL East.

Unrelated, Arrieta is 22 days older than I am, apparently. (Marc Normandin)
2010-06-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)How much of a boost can the Reds expect from getting Edinson Volquez back? Do they put him in the pen or the rotation?
(cubfan131 from IA)
Big boost, and rotation. No reason to put him in the bullpen if he's had success in the rotation previously. Give him a shot in the rotation; if it isn't working, shift him to the 'pen, but definitely start with the rotation. (Eric Seidman)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)If the Reds find a huge pile of money under the mattress and add Johnny Damon, do they instantly become favorites for the Wild Card?
(Scott from DC)
Man, if the Reds understood anything about the marginal win curve, they'd already have signed Damon. He'd be a nice fit in that park, and they really could use his bat atop that lineup.

Then again, that they haven't signed him suggests that maybe they know too much about the conditions of some of those young arms. Say a prayer for Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez tonight. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-02-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Will, Can you give an update on Edinson Volquez and how you think he will do this season and beyond? Thanks,
(Southcoast57 from Houston)
Typical TJ rehab, likely to be pitching around the ASB and back in Cincy by August. I'm not sure of the role, but the back end of the Reds rotation won't hold him back.
(OK, little break here for eyedrops.) (Will Carroll)
2009-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)For overall career value, this point on, who would you rather have Edinson Volquez or a pitching prospect ranked around 80th on Goldstein's top 100 list next year? Neither will likely pitch next year, both have some risk of development, both have some upside. I guess the question boils down to how much you believe that Edinson can regain his status from the injury. I am in a strat league, I could either keep Volquez or cut him and draft someone in the 80th range on Goldstein's next list.
(LindInMoskva from DC)
Volquez will miss 2010, but most pitchers come back from TJ to previous level. That's a major league pitcher with some upside. He'll be 28. Looking back to Goldstein's 2008 list (not 2009), guys at that level are Deolis Guerra, Radhames Liz, Max Scherzer, Jair Jurrjens, Aaron Poreda, and Greg Reynolds. Even with a year of development, we're looking at two guys who have established themselves at the MLB level, plus Poreda who's an upside guy. I'd probably take Poreda and Jurrjens over Volquez right now, Scherzer's a toss up, but then you have to figure out the "bust risk." Which of those guys would I have picked LAST year and am I confident that I can pick correctly? Kevin's an expert and had Poreda under Liz ... I think that bust risk is huge, so I'd almost always go with the guy I know can pitch. (Will Carroll)
2009-08-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)So will Dusty Baker be remembered more for his years in San Friancisco or ruining Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Edinson Volquez, and Jonny Cueto?
(Joel from Chicago)
The latter, I think -- and personally, I'd say justifiably so. What happened to Prior and Woody (which hopefully won't be completely duplicated in Cinci) wasn't all Dusty's fault, so he shouldn't bear the entire responsibility. But at the same time his success in SF had a lot more to do with another controversial figure working in the Bay Area at the time than with Dusty himself. (Ken Funck)
2009-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Will, thanks your time. I just traded for Edinson Volquez in my keeper league (I will have his rights for the next 4 years.) Do you think he will make a close to full recovery, and if so, when?
(DS from California)
I think he'll be back pitching normally in 2011. (Will Carroll)
2009-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Will, Its ironic that Edinson Volquez and Josh Hamilton both had All-Star season last year and are both on the DL at the same time this season. Which player comes back stronger this season and whom would you select for "your team" for the rest of their career?
(BK from Terry's Turf Club)
I'll always pick the hitter (and I have Hamilton on my historically bad Tout team). Did you really think I'd take a pitcher off a Dusty-managed team? (Will Carroll)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)In order for the Reds to be in the wildcard race come September, they need to __________?
(dshugert from Ohio)
The short answer: They Aaron Harang to pitch like he did in 2006 and 2007 while Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto advance or at least hold their ground relative to last year while maintaining health. They also need Dusty to get Willy Taveras out of the leadoff spot, and preferably out of the lineup in favor of someone who can get on base regularly. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you Reds fans finally have reason for optimism with a solid young core of Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Edwin Encarnacion, Brandon Phillips, Chris Dickerson, Johnny Cueto, and Edinson Volquez?
(Brandon from Charleston)
Absolutely, there's reason for optimism so long as Dusty Baker doesn't mangle those arms.

I had the Reds as my sleeper team last year and while they didn't get there, most of the guys you mentioned are fascinating, with a ton of upside. The series I watched most closely all year long was when the Reds came to Yankee Stadium in late June.

I don't see the Reds with a shot at the 2009 NL Central but I think third place is a possibility with the right moves this winter. One of which might be taking out a restraining order against Baker from coming to the ballpark. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you be worried about EdiNson Volquez' apparent fatigue at the end of the season and how it could hinder his effectiveness in 2009?
(ericmilburn from San Francisco)
Yes, he was clearly overworked. I don't expect that to stop Dusty. The only difference between Wood and Prior '04 and Volquez and Cueto '09 is that the Reds didn't sniff the playoffs. (Will Carroll)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)I told Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez to throw 300 sliders a day during the offseason. It builds arm strength.
(Dusty Baker from Cincinnati)
Better them than nine year olds. What? (Will Carroll)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)For next year - Cliff Lee or Edinson Volquez?
(bahays from Work - bosses GONE)
Lee ... good lord, the choice is a Cy Young winner or a future TJ patient? (Will Carroll)
2008-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)With quality young talent like Jay Bruce, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez, Joey Votto, and others, do you think the Reds are close to contending?
(smitty25039 from Charleston)
If you haven't already, check out Kevin Goldstein's article on which teams might be the "next Rays" in the NL. http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8203
The Reds are close, but as Goldstein says, the outlook is "semi-bright, but not perfect." One big problem is the outfield corners; they've got nobody now without Dunn, and it doesn't look like minor league center fielder Drew Stubbs is quite ready to make enough impact with the bat to move Jay Bruce to a corner. According to Goldstein, Cincinnati is also pretty weak in pitching prospects beyond the group that already hit the majors this season, and the 2008 results from Homer Bailey were discouraging. Still, Cueto and Volquez are a fantastic young duo, and I'm pretty high on Ramon Ramirez, too, who pitched well in September and has a nasty changeup. Not in 2009, but by 2010 they could be fighting for a division title if that starting trio continues to develop. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)No mention recently of Franklin Morales that I can find anywhere on BP. Since he's one of Kevin's darlings, I find the silence maddening. Sure, young pitchers are going to struggle, but this is awful! And if I may indulge, shouldn't the Reds sign Dunn for 3 years, put him in LF, Bruce in RF, and find a decent CF? This team is close enough to contending with the talent they have that leaving 2 giant holes in the OF (the result of trading Dunn) would be a mistake. Do you agree?
(rgrunder from dayton, oh)
Hey, between the struggling that's explicable in any environment, and the possible exaggeration of that encouraged by having to pitch in Coors Field, I think it's OK to chill. People were in a hurry to write off Edinson Volquez not so long ago, after all.

As for Dunn, the seeming disinterest in him is sort of fascinating, to the point that yes, it might be interesting to see if he'd agree to a multi-year deal to stay put, since it might now cost the Reds less than it would have a year ago. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)OK Joe, I need your help. Will Carroll gave me an answer but Law and Stark both snubbed me. I have a bet with a buddy of mine over who would be voted the NL Cy Young if the season ended today. We need another opinion. There is a Yoo-hoo at stake. Help a guy out.
(JoshEngleman from Tamaqua, PA)
Edinson Volquez. His ERA lead--having an ERA in the 1.00s gets attention--outweighs the wins he gives away to Webb. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)Are you coming around at all on the job I've been doing as Rangers g.m.?
(Jon Daniels from Arlington, Texas)
Lots of Rangers questions today... Jon, like most GMs you've got your high and low points. I gave you high praise for the haul you got at the deadline last year (http://www.nysun.com/sports/texas-holds-a-fire-sale-to-salvage-future/59557/), and both Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley can hit. But that pitching staff is a fright -- both the rotation and bullpen -- even without the Bad Knight of Aruba, and I certainly wonder if Edinson Volquez could have helped your team more than Hamilton. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-04-25 15:00:00 (link to chat)I do the dance of the man who drafted Zack Greinke and Edinson Volquez in the later rounds. Which do I package with one of my excess 3B's to make a move for Brandon Webb? I hate straight fantasy questions, but such joy can apparently inspire great hypocrisy.
(Numfar from Pylea)
Normally I'd say keep the guy with the K rate, but Volquez is a flyball pitcher in a park that punishes same and a manager with a short leash for youngsters, so I'd probalby go with Greinke (Jay Jaffe)
2008-03-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mike, here's a question that appears to be growing more and more relevant: of the following up-and-coming SPs, can you rank them in terms of value they will provide to a fantasy team THIS YEAR assuming they all get spots in the rotation? The SPs are Manny Parra, Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Ian Kennedy, Gio Gonzalez and Jonathan Sanchez. This should be relevant to most fantasy players looking to make a great WW pickup early in the season.
(The Grinch from Whoville)
I guess you were one of the millions to go see see Horton hears a Who huh?

Parra is making the Brewers make a tough decision but may not make the club at first. Volquez has a lot to prove. Cueto and Kennedy are arms that the Reds and yanks absolutely love and right now they are my top two of this list. I can't see Gio not being a member of the rotation this year at some point but when is up to a few factors and Sanchez like parra is nice sleeper with high upside. Solid list of names. (Mike Siano)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneThis has baffled me for quite some time: Why isn't Edinson Volquez's first name pronounced ed-EEN-son instead of ED-in-son? (John Perrotto)
