2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Armed with a fastball that can reach the mid-90s and a knee-buckling slow curve, Veras has always had the stuff to make batters look silly. If only those pesky hitters would stop stubbornly waiting him out and making him throw strikes, he could lower his execrable walk rate and really do some damage. There are worse relievers around, and Veras is a leading contender to catch lightning in a bottle one season, fleetingly improve his command, and put in a dominant 50-inning stretch. The Astros will become the sixth team with a Leyden jar attached to a kite string in the past five years.
2012 Another reliever in the mold the Pirates gravitate to—strong-armed, wild, and cheap—Veras is now 31 and his control problems are no longer the equivalent of a baby going through teething, but rather a middle-aged man dealing with strike-zone commitment issues. Mid-90s heat and a tantalizing curveball (a pitch that Veras threw at a career-high rate in 2011) have led to inspiring strikeout rates throughout his career and made his walk rates tolerable. Finding relievers similar to Veras is no tough task, but the Brewers weren't excited about hearing the arbitrator's decision on Casey McGehee (for whom Veras was traded) anyway, and Veras should be above-average and cheap.
2011 Last spring's veteran non-roster invitee who was seemingly guaranteed an Opening Day roster spot to provide bracing veteranosity or an ex-Yankee contact high, Veras bollixed that proposition by giving up runs every time out in April, playing his way back off the roster and earning a one-way ticket to the Big Easy. Veras returned in June and earned his keep with his still-exciting blend of mid-90s heat and a nice, slow curve. He's far too wild to rely on, but even after getting non-tendered in December, you can count on another non-roster invite at the very least.
2010 Well, beggars can’t be choosers. In return for what was basically the major-league minimum, the Indians got exactly replacement-level bullpen help. Given the state of their bullpen in June, that was actually an improvement. When comparing his peripherals in his time with the Indians versus his 2008 “breakout” season with the Yankees, he actually pitched better in most stats save one, his strikeout rate. He had a lower WHIP, and a significantly lower BABIP. The one blemish was that his strikeout rate was down almost 20 percent. If he can bring that back up, somebody might have a bargain on their hands, but then the whole problem with Veras is that he and Mr. Consistency have never been introduced, causing four organizations (now that the Indians have non-tendered him as of December) to give up on him despite good stuff.
2009 Having spent most of 2007 on the DL after surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, Veras began the season at Scranton, but was back up by May. As has long been the case, Veras fought his control, and his home-run rate was a bit high, though not Farnsworthian. Many of Veras's problems manifested in August and September, but no injury was reported. Assuming that this was no more than a blip on the radar, and further assuming no dramatic uptick in control, Veras would seem to have been placed in the role for which he is best suited, medium- to low-leverage relief work.
2008 Veras missed most of the season after having bone chips removed from his elbow, but made it back to pitch for the Yankees in September and even snuck onto the postseason roster. Veras has struck out 417 in 439.1 minor league innings, but has always been loose with his control, a problem that he made progress on in 2006, but that reasserted itself post-surgery. If the wildness was merely rust, he should get a long look for the wide-open Yankees pen.
2007 `I feel proud that the Yankees have signed me to help set the table for Mariano Rivera,` Veras said after joining the Yankees as a minor league free agent. `That`s something very important to me.` As it turned out, Veras would have had a better chance of table-setting for Mo if he had moonlighted as a waiter at Rivera`s new restaurant. The good news is that Veras has a good fastball and seemed to put his command problems behind him at Columbus, dropping his walk rate to 2.9 per nine innings. He could be an option for the Yankees pen, should the organization learn to trust relievers under 30.

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did any team do better than the Astros at the deadline? Seems like they turned a reliever pretending to be a starter, a low-tier closer and a fourth outfielder into a good OF prospect, a solid OF prospect, two strong SP prospects, a PTBNL and a top 40 overall pick in a strong draft class next year.
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston)
I think the two Chicago teams did. The Astros didn't get a prospect of Garcia or Olt's cut, and the Cubs also received a close-to-surefire MLB pitcher in Justin Grimm. Houston did get some interesting pieces. Danry Vazquez's power is intriguing, L.J. Hoes could be a nice bench piece, and the arms might turn into something (though I think the Kyle Smith outrage, which seems based upon his numbers alone is a bit much; besides, Justin Maxwell is an okay fourth outfielder). We'll see what the PTBNL and draft pick yields.

Of course, on the bright side: Houston didn't give up a whole lot that impacts their future. Jose Veras was always trade bait, Bud Norris is about to cost more than a bad team should pay him, and Justin Maxwell was a savvy waiver-wire pickup. So Houston seemingly did well. I just don't know if they did the best. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Did the Astros just give away Jose Veras for basically nothing?
(jlarsen from chicago)
No, Danry Vasquez is a very real prospect. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Zach, Glad you enjoyed my first-hand photo I took of Keon Barnum last week. Who do you think takes over for Jose Veras? Jose Cisnero or Hector Ambriz?
(Brent from Laguna Beach)
That was a great picture I sent that around to a couple scouts they got a good laugh. From what I hear Jose Cisnero is going to get the first crack at it. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Other than Rodney are there any other closers who have struggled you would specifically avoid? Johnson, Chapman, and Soriano have all blown their fair share of saves.
(Kyle from Denver)
The closer market isn't as such where any one can be avoided. I traded for Jose Veras 3 weeks ago and have enjoyed what he's been able to do. Brandon League - that's avoidable. (Jason Collette)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Of the 'bottom tier' closers (rank 20-30+) who are some you are targeting this year?
(Blake from LA)
Jose Veras. Big-time strikeout potential and little competition in the Astros' bullpen. Of course, he walks too many and will have to face some very tough offenses in the AL West, but for a dirt-cheap 20 saves, he's that guy. (Cory Schwartz)
2009-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)I never liked Holden Caulfield. What about "A Farewell to Kings" from Rush? Is there a favorite in the NL East anymore. They all seem be falling apart.
(sbryk7 from Brooklyn, NY)
I recall it as a decent album, tho' I probably haven't listened to it since I was 16... I've said all season long that the first of the NL East contenders to add talent via trade is going to be the one that wins, and I think that's still true.

The Indians just purchased Jose Veras from the Yankees, btw. Any reliever in a storm... (Steven Goldman)
