BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 In 1961, Roger Maris homered every 11.4 times he batted. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of that season, Anthony Vasquez allowed a home run to every 11.2 batters he faced in 2011. Apparently Vasquez loves history, and there's no way around it. The Mariners, somewhat curiously, stuck with Vasquez through the final five weeks of the season, and his woefulness ended up influencing the pennant race. In back-to-back starts against the Angels, he gave up 15 total runs. Perhaps in the interest of fairness, Seattle allowed him to make consecutive starts against Texas later in the month; he allowed 10 runs in 6 1/3 total innings. His upside is awfully low, but soft-tossing lefties who throw strikes have made millions in Safeco before. If you can't name one, you're either reading this book out of sequence or your short-term memory is atrocious.
2011 Soft-tossing changeup artist Anthony Vasquez has the potential to be Jason Vargas with better control and more grounders. After running the Cal League gauntlet unscathed, hes not far from back-of-the-rotation-ready.
