2013 A deck chair added to the Boston Titanic from Minnesota in early August, Valencia didn’t do much to endear himself to Red Sox fans. He was traded to Baltimore for cash considerations in the offseason. Hitting left-handed pitching is the sum total of Valencia’s abilities. That would be fine if not for his lackluster defense, which makes finding a spot for him on the bench somewhere between difficult and self-defeating.
2012 Valencia's 2010 debut was a pleasant surprise, but his track record suggested that sustaining that high BABIP would be a stretch—and it was. The 70-point drop exposed his subpar walk rate and turned his bat into a liability, at least against righties; he hit .224/.274/.352 in 449 PA against them, compared to .309/.352/.470 in 159 PA against lefties. The story on defense wasn't any happier, even though our system thought more highly of him than either Defensive Runs Saved (-13) or Total Zone (-18). Ron Gardenhire was vocal in his criticism of Valencia's lack of focus afield, not the first time such a charge has been leveled against him. He may not be the Twins' long-term answer at third, but he's still young and inexpensive enough that a happy medium between his two seasons—his career .269/.314/.406 line—would have some value if he could stop the bleeding on defense.
2011 Heading into last season, the Twins' hot corner had been home to nothing but cold lumber since 2006, but Valencia more than held his own as the starting third baseman in his 2010 rookie campaign, playing a significant role in the Twins' divisional victory. The Twinkies' lineup improved immensely when he replaced the offensively-challenged Nick Punto at the position, and while the 2006 draftee doesn’t project to be a huge home-run hitter, he does possess good gap power and decent plate discipline. He hammers fastballs and got better against breaking pitches as the season wore on. Valencia's range is a tick below average, but he figures to stick at third base because of his strong arm and soft hands. Valencia may not be a perennial all-star, but he should be a major upgrade over the government-surplus cheese the Twins were pushing out there before his arrival.
2010 A 19th-round pick in 2006, Valencia has often been seen as no more than an organizational player, but he keeps hitting at every level he's assigned to, and he's now very close to getting a big-league look with a team that has no set third baseman at the big-league level. He does no one thing exceptionally well, but he's solid across the board, hitting for a decent average with a bit of power and solid defense at the hot corner. He's more of a multi-year stopgap than a future star, the kind of player who holds down an everyday job while you try to find something better.
2009 Since Gary Gaetti and his then-201 career home runs left town after the 1990 season, the Twins have seen a third baseman surpass the 15-homer mark just twice, Corey Koskie hitting 26 and 25 in 2001 and 2004, respectively. They haven't come close since, but that's not unexpected when you vent over 200 games on Nick Punto. Valencia has the power to end all that. What more he'll do is still open to question, as he's not selective, and although his work at third base is fundamentally sound, no one will ever mistake him for Brooks Robinson. He can also be a bit cranky and unfocused at times, which doesn't play well in the minors and doesn't work at all in the majors unless you're so good they can't get rid of you—and no one is saying Valencia rises to that level.

2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Christian Colon? He had a nice 2014 and seems like a solid 2b. What do you see his future as and will he get a chance to start for the Royals? Want to know more about him. Thx.
(Cristobal Colon from Pasadena, CA)
A certain segment of Royals fans will always link Colon with Chris Sale, which is a fair standard for the organization, but somewhat unfair for Colon. He impressed team officials by embracing his utility role this season. When the club traded Danny Valencia in July, they said the imperative was getting Colon to the majors. It would make some sense for Colon to get 250-300 at-bats next season as a backup for Omar Infante and a right-handed complement to Mike Moustakas at third base.

But, who knows. (Andy McCullough)
2013-08-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)There is speculation in the Detroit media that the Tigers won't take Peralta back, despite the obvious boost he gives them at shortstop, because of "image" concerns. I think that, if they don't play him and lose at any point, their image is tarnished forever. The Giants got to the WS because of a huge contribution from Melky. What do you think?
(Tigerdog from Orange county CA)
Well, they did trade for Iglalasis.

Tigerdog, hijacking your question to run this. It's official:

Major League Baseball issued the following discipline today for violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program in relation to the Biogenesis investigation. Players receiving 50-game suspensions without pay for their violations of the Program are:

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Antonio Bastardo;
San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera;
New York Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli;
Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz;
• Padres pitcher Fautino De Los Santos, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A San Antonio Missions of the Texas League;
Houston Astros pitcher Sergio Escalona, who is currently of the roster of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League;
• Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the International League;
Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League;
• Free agent pitcher Jordan Norberto;
Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta;
New York Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Binghamton Mets of the Eastern League; and
• Mets infielder/outfielder Jordany Valdespin, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League.

Norberto’s suspension will be effective immediately once he signs with another Major League organization. All other suspensions are effective immediately. None of the players will appeal their discipline.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal, all of whom already have served 50-game suspensions as a result of their violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program stemming from their connections to Biogenesis, will not receive additional discipline.
Major League Baseball’s investigation found no violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by either Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez or Baltimore Orioles infielder Danny Valencia.

STATEMENT FROM THE TIGERS:
The Detroit Tigers today issued the following statement regarding the suspension of Jhonny Peralta:

"We recognize the suspension of Jhonny Peralta for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program as a measure taken in the best interest of the game. The Detroit Tigers continue to fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outline by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the Tigers' organization will provide no further comment on Peralta’s suspension."

STATEMENT FROM PERALTA:
“In spring of 2012, I made a terrible mistake that I deeply regret. I apologize to everyone that I have hurt as a result of my mistake, including my teammates, the Tigers’ organization, the great fans in Detroit, Major League Baseball, and my family. I take full responsibility for my actions, have no excuses for my lapse in judgment and I accept my suspension.
I love the fans, my teammates and this organization and my greatest punishment is knowing that I have let so many good people down. I promise to do everything possible to try and earn back the respect that I have lost.” (Maury Brown About Biogenesis and Business)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Danny Valencia legit or not? Don't recall hearing much about him before this season and he's 25. Seems like he had good numbers in the minors, but with not as much patience as he's had in the majors so far.
(Seth from Los Angeles)
He has a .371 BABIP so I'm going to go with no, but that doesn't mean he can't be any good. Cut 30-40 points off of each of his slash stats and he's still plenty useful for the position--he always had high BABIP in the minors, so if he posts .320 and .330 BABIP consistently I wouldn't be shocked. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Danny Valencia for real? Better keeper than Viciedo?
(kprince from Boston)
Valencia's BABIP is .377, which is driving his batting average up, but he's also been great in the minors (excepting this year). If he lost 30-40 points of batting average he wouldn't look anywhere near as impressive as he has in his first 202 plate appearances. I think he can be pretty good in the end, but this is a fluky hot streak to start his career. (Marc Normandin)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Danny Valencia the answer for the Twins at 3B in 2010?
(Travis from San Diego)
He'd certainly be my first choice. (Kevin Goldstein)
