BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Once a promising prospect for the Giants, Merkin Valdez had his career derailed by Tommy John surgery and is no longer effective.
2010 For years, the Giants have been waiting for the big Dominican flamethrower to be healthy enough to regularly pour gas in the big leagues, and at long last, he was. The result was self-inflicted napalm, as Valdez struggled to find the strike zone while increasingly getting shunted off to lost causes, appearing in just four Giants wins in his 26 appearances during the season's final three months, and surrendering 24 runs in 26 1/3 IP. He's out of options, so he either makes the team or visits the waiver wire, and anyone who can dial high-90s heat as often as Valdez does will get claimed. If he's still a Giant by the time you read this, the danger is that he'll be kicked to the end of the pen and stay as stale and ineffective as he was in the second half. He needs to pitch, so something's gotta give.
2009 Coming off a season lost to Tommy John surgery, Valdez made the Giants out of camp last spring and pitched well until pain in his pitching elbow pushed him to the DL in mid-May, clearing room for Hinshaw in the bullpen. He spent the rest of the season getting evaluated and rehabbing. When healthy, he can dominate with his high-90s heat, but entering his age-27 season, we're beginning to wonder if he'll ever be healthy again.
2008 Merkin Valdez's prospect status had already taken a hit before a torn UCL at the end of 2006 pushed him into Tommy John surgery and out of the 2007 season. He's rehabbing this spring
2007 Merkin Valdez threw 99 MPH last spring, but with the control of a bat-spun drunk. He had already been demoted from being Fresno`s closer when he blew out his elbow; he will miss the 2007 season.
2006 Although he`s one of the sytem`s most promising arms, Valdez wasn`t pitching at 100 % all year and was moved to the pen in August to protect his sore elbow. Valdez`s fastball didn`t look as unhittable as it did in 2004, he has problems with mechanics, and both his breaking and off-speed stuff are works in progress at best, so you have to squint pretty hard to still see him as a future ace. In Neil Gaiman`s `Sandman` graphic novels, the Merkin was the mother of spiders. You could probably get a lot of strikeouts that way, using one of your four right arms to throw your mid-90s fastball from unusual angles. Then again, it might mess up your mechanics, and this Merkin has trouble enough trouble on that score already.
2005 Valdez sped through four levels, making it all the way to the majors by year's end. He spent both of his big league outings as a reliever, and there lies the rub. Since being acquired from the Braves in the Russ Ortiz trade, Valdez has breezed through the minors. Hitters either swing and miss at his unhittable mid-90s sinking fastball or bang it harmlessly into the turf. His hard slider is coming along, though it still needs work. Unfortunately, Randy Johnson has been the only pitcher in recent memory to be successful in the majors with just two pitches. The old Earl Weaver approach seems prudent here: let Valdez start the season in a high-leverage, multi-inning bullpen role out of spring training. If all goes well, it would spare his arm mileage, while giving him time to perfect a change-up, and he'd start when needed. As long as they don't get carried away: as great as it would be to have a Brad Lidge on their hands, it's worth finding out if they've got a right-handed Johan Santana.
