2005 This is why the Giants are eager to unload their early-round draft choices every year. Torcato was the 19th overall pick in 1998, and showed some promise early in his career, including hitting .324 at San Jose as a 20-year-old. But it's been downhill since, with Torcato's projected power never materializing, and his walk rate regressing to comically bad levels. If the Giants can get any kind of decent value in trade for him, they should jump on it.
2003 Torcato has drawn praise from USA Today for being ďone of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues.Ē Translation: he may someday hit an empty .300 in the majors. Okay, thatís a bit harsh, he did develop a little home run power last year, and heís still young enough to develop more. But without any batting eye to speak of, and without any special defensive ability, heís a poor manís Reggie Jefferson rather than a major league star.
2002 After a few years as a lousy third baseman, Torcato quickly became an adequate left fielder. He'll have to move again this year, now that Bonds is in the fold through 2005. More importantly, he'll have to add some meat to his high-average, gap-hitting style. He had just 22 unintentional walks and five home runs last season, unacceptable numbers for a corner outfielder. He'll make a cameo in San Francisco this year and be the frontrunner for the right-field job in 2003. There's a 15% chance he becomes Bobby Higginson.
2001 Tony Torcato is a good athlete who performed fairly well as a 20-year-old in the California League, hitting a promising 37 doubles. There's an overriding problem here, though, and I don't mean just with Torcato, but rather throughout the Giant organization: these guys have no plate discipline! Torcato's defense is pretty suspect, so if he makes the majors to stay, it's likely to be as a first baseman. If he wants to be a major-league first baseman, though, he's going to have to learn to control the strike zone, and that's not an adequate priority in this organization. I wonder what Torcato would look like at this point if drafted by, say, the Athletics.
2000 He was the Giantsí first-round pick in the 1998 draft. Torcato is very young, and as a first-round pick, he'll be given every opportunity to succeed. Early returns are less than inspiring. He hit .291 last season, but with just four home runs and 30 walks in 422 at-bats. Check back next year.
1999 Torcato was the Giants' first pick in the June draft. He is often referred to as a "pure hitter," which in his case apparently means he hit a lot of homers in high school. But he only hit three homers in 220 AB for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and he has shoulder problems which may result in a move to first base. At this point he looks to be an odd choice for a top draft pick.
