2007 Thomson is a reminder that not every veteran starter comes to Atlanta, takes a sprinkle of fairy dust, and becomes a world-beater forever after. Hits, homers, walks, runs, earned or unearned, you name it, Thomson surrendered them with an alacrity that made him an honorary French citizen. He also got hurt frequently enough to get sympathy cards from Super Dave Osborne. As of late December, there`s talk of his signing with the Mariners, which seems like a perfect match of low expectations and unhappy outcomes.
2006 After toiling for most of his career in two parks that have broken pitchers` hearts--Coors Field and the Ballpark at Arlington--Thomson was rescued by the Braves, and turned in a very solid season in 2004. He was off to a good start in 2005 before he strained the flexor tendon in his right middle finger. Sidelined for three months, he struggled on returning, posting a 5.55 ERA, compared to 3.42 before. Nonetheless, the Braves picked up his $4.75 million option for 2006, and he should return to being a rotation regular.
2005 In most seasons, Thomson's weakness was the homer. That wasn't a glaring problem in 2004, and his supporting numbers were about as strong as they've been in recent seasons. In the right environment, Thomson's a solid and undervalued back-of-the-rotation guy. Credit the Braves for identifying him as such.
2004 Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this was your 2003 Texas Rangers ace. We shouldn't make fun, since Thomson actually did have a nice year, even if it wasn't up the standard of most teams' number-one starter. Now he'll be making the transition from two of the most unpleasant pitching environments in baseball (Colorado and Texas) to the Cox/Mazzone pitching factory in Atlanta. We expect good things.
2003 That’s right, Thomson came over from Coors Field and pitched worse despite lowering his ERA. Nevertheless, on the year, he gave his team quality starts in half of his 30 times out (two were blown after the sixth). The two months as a Met must have left him missing the dangerous life, since he returned to Texas and a hitter’s park. That projection seems about right; his road ERA over the last three years is 4.52, and he’ll be in the DH league now.
2002 The best pitcher the Rockies have ever developed made it back to the rotation last year, following a year lost to surgery on a torn labrum. Three starts in May proved only that he wasn't ready yet. Coming back in August, he had a 3.62 ERA in 11 starts down the stretch, with a three-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio. They'll have to monitor him, and they should be prepared to accept 150 good innings rather than risk further injury. Handled gently, he'll be a real asset.
2001 John Thomson worked slowly through rehab on a torn labrum and might be ready to go in camp. Still, there’s little chance that he’s going to get back to where he was in 1998. He's the last of Jim Leyland’s victims, although who knows what damage Leyland might do through consultation. Dallas Green is busy wreaking havoc with the Phillies, after all.
2000 Thomson pitched through pain most of the season and underwent postseason surgery for a torn right labrum. A healthy Thomson’s value to the Rockies is almost incalculable; he’s shown he can pitch successfully at altitude, and he allows the team to save the money they’d have to spend to replace him with quality innings. The recovery period for his surgery isn’t long; if he doesn’t have any collateral damage, he’ll be back in the rotation in 2000.
1999 The Rockies' best pitcher, even though he didn't come with several years and millions of dollars attached to him (yet). The one concern coming into '98 was his workload, but he was healthy most of the year, and pitched almost 40 fewer innings in '98 than he had the year before. Will be the Rockies' ace as long as his arm holds up.
1998 Thomson stepped in when injuries decimated the Rockies’ rotation, and after a slow start, went 5-3 3.94 after the All-Star break. His control was much improved in the majors; if he can continue that trend, he has a chance to be a solid pitcher.
1997 Took a big step forward in 1996, and he’ll fight to maintain it in 1997. Could be a darn good pitcher if he can just control his stuff a little bit more, and I think he’ll do it. Look for him to be in a rotation somewhere in two-and-a-half years.
