YearComment

2013 Theories abound regarding Thole's drop from useful hitter to miserable one. A September report had him claiming that he'd sold out for more pull power and was returning to a shorter swing, though (small sample alert!) he didn't hit any better after that announcement than he had before. Alternatively, Ty Wigginton concussed him in a collision in May, and Thole had been hitting .284/.356/.370 before the injury. Or maybe it was a fluke. Or maybe the league found his weak point. There are a lot of moving parts and post-hoc rationales, but a lefty catcher who can put up a .350 OBP is worth trying to figure out. Thole also caught Johan Santana's no-hitter, so that's something.
2012 With no other options, the Mets made Thole their primary catcher in 2011, but in platoon form only, as he was kept away from left-handed pitchers while delivering a performance that was perfectly Thole-esque. He draws a fair number of walks, rarely strikes out, and laces balls all over the park, but with power that can almost be described as nonexistent, he doesn't have offensive value unless he's hitting closer to .300 than .250. Throw in poor receiving skills and a below-average arm, and he's nothing more than filler, but the kind of filler who will likely stick around for another decade or so simply because he's willing to wear the tools of ignorance.
2011 Even in a more forgiving setting than Citi Field, Thole wouldn't impress anyone with his power; that just isn't one of his skills. With a free-pass rate of nearly 10 percent in his major-league career and the ability to make consistent contact, he may not need to put the ball over the wall to provide offensive value. His defense behind the plate, once a knock against him, has improved significantly—Thole threw out 44 percent of would-be base thieves in the majors last season, compared to 24 percent over the last three years in the minors, and did a capable job of blocking the plate. He earned the long end of the 2011 starting job with his half-season performance (Ronnie Paulino will be his platoon partner), and should be one of the better catching options in the league given the depressing state of the position.
2010 There might not be a player in the minors who plays more within himself than Thole. He knows what he's good at—working the count and rifling balls up the middle for singles—so that's all he every tries to do. The result is a powerless catcher with average-at-best defense, but one gets on base with the best of them. Expected to begin the year at Triple-A in 2010, Thole is coming off a fantastic winter in Venezuela, where he flirted with .400 (and a .500 on-base percentage). A good spring could expedite his timetable.
2009 In a perfect world, Josh Thole grows up to be the new Scott Bradley, a lefty-hitting backup backstop who gets on base a bit and makes contact.

DateQuestionAnswer
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Picture this: Dickey deserves to make (and possibly start) the ASG. However, none of the presumed NL all-star catchers have experience catching a knuckler. Dickey lobbies to have Josh Thole added to roster as his "personal catcher". Request is turned down because now ... "the game counts" and Thole is not worthy of a spot on the roster. Comments?
(dianagram from VORGville)
Personally, I want Zack Greinke to start the All-Star Game just because it's in Kansas City. Others, like Dickey, are more likely candidates though.

As for the scenario, it's interesting. I can see it being a possibility, complete with Thole not making it. And I wouldn't be too saddened by it. Catchers may not be used to catching the knuckler, but I bet they can if necessary (especially for 2 innings). the more important consideration, though, is what La Russa thinks about catchers catching the knuckler. I bet he'd be happy to give Yadier Molina that chance. If Brian McCann is the starter though, he might think differently... (Larry Granillo)
2012-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Thole is off to a blistering start. Is there any chance that he will add power to his game?
(Steve N from Delaware)
No, I don't see it. Power is reputed to be the last tool to develop (though I tend to vote for either "wisdom" or "perspicacity"), but Thole's already 25 and nobody has ever projected him to hit for power. If he goes deep ten times this year, drop me a line and I'll send you a prize, so long as I can find a shipping box that can hold perspicacity. (Ken Funck)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have the following four catchers in a 16 team Strat-O-Matic league where you can keep a guy forever if you like. Which do you like long term: Chris Iannetta, Ryan Hanigan, Josh Thole, Jason Castro? I'd love to have a stronger catcher, but that's not a possibility until next year's draft.
(jhardman from Strat-O-Matic land)
Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to play a strat-o-matic league before, so I'm not sure how all the specifics work, like how catcher defense is factored in. Hitting wise in regular roto terms, I like Iannetta the best. (Derek Carty)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Two pitching questions: 1) What are the chances of Bumgarner finding that missing velocity? 2) Jenrry Mejia, 8th inning or Triple A? And Happy St Pat's
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Happy St. Pat's to you too, especially when it's such a gloriously beautiful day (here in Chicago, at least). I think Bumgarner's going to be fine, and would refer you to some of the things Kevin Goldstein has said about how, last year, he'd been allowed to throw too much between games, and that was the problem. I'd love to see Mejia stick around, in part because he'd be another guy to count among those story-changing youngsters that the organization does have almost ready. However, like Josh Thole, I can see taking their time and easing him in later on this season. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a believer in Josh Thole? He cant be worse than Schneider and Santos, right?
(brian from Brooklyn NY)
If that's your litmus test in me believing in him, then yet. Not a great defender, but can hit. Best comp I've heard from a scout is Darrin Fletcher. (Kevin Goldstein)
