DateQuestionAnswer
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Chris Taylor- Is there a regular there? Is .275/.333/.400 with solid D for the better part of a decade too much to realistically hope for?
(Prich from Hawkville)
I like him. It's not a special profile, but maybe a Ryan Theriot type. (Jason Parks)
2012-11-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the Astros moving to the AL, I would imagine that there will now be a need for interleague games throughout the season. How will this impact roster construction for NL teams given that they will need a DH for those away games? Previously, many teams would just call up a player to DH for a couple of weeks and then send them back down. This now seems less feasible. So, have there been any rumblings about NL teams looking at guys that are bat-first types? To see a NL team go to Boston (with David Ortiz as their DH) and have to use their futility infielder as their DH would seem to be competitive disadvantage.
(JoshC77 from Columbus)
Hey, JoshC77. You're right that moving the Astros to the AL will require interleague games to be scheduled throughout the season, but even though there will always be an interleague series on the slate, the number of games each team will play against the other league will stay the same. With that in mind, I don't think you'll see a significant impact on roster construction in the NL, since interleague play will continue to make up one-ninth of the schedule. And, as painful as it was watching the Giants trot out "futility infielder" Ryan Theriot as their designated hitter, they did manage to the World Series while doing it! (Daniel Rathman)
2012-10-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Geoff. I'm wondering if the new interleague schedule will have any effect on line-up construction? Will guys, like Buster Posey, benefit from the new format by being able to DH and get a day off behind the plate throughout the season? Will this have any effect, and, if so, is it enough to make a difference?
(FletchLives from Wisconsin)
Hi Fletch, love the hair. My gut reaction is to think that it might help a guy like Posey. But the DH role is funny. He's in the lineup but he's not actually playing baseball, and some people are better at waiting for their next at-bat than others. Jesus Montero, for example, hit two-thirds of his homers as a catcher last year despite getting 90 more PA as a DH. So I think it depends on the individual. If you find the right guy, then it could help. The downside - and this is the other issue with NL teams and the DH (hello, Ryan Theriot) - is that you could hurt yourself by putting Posey into a role where he is less likely to succeed *and* having Hector Sanchez in the lineup. The short version is, I don't think it will make a difference, although it will be interesting to see if some NL teams start carrying a guy who has experience in the DH role to try and gain an advantage there. (Geoff Young)
2012-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks to the exposure you've given my ability to fluently speak the pun-filled language of "MLB headlines" I've been offered a job at MLB Gameday. Here's the press release - Lettuce do the Introduction: MLB Welcomes PETA
(joepeta from San Francisco)
The thing I love about MLB.com headlines is that they are absolutely not lazy. MLB.com headlines are the worst headlines in the world, really tortured puns and references, and at some point I'll do my 10 greatest ever or something. But they're not lazy! It's hard to really capture that MLB.com headline voice, which combines grit and effort with terrible results, like Ryan Theriot. (Sam Miller)
2011-07-21 16:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason, with Drew going down for the year I'm left with Chipper (DL) and Peralta for my SS/3B who are some available pick ups to see me through?
(Brian from Rhode Island)
I lost Drew too and was immediately offered Ryan Theriot and Tyler Skaggs for Shelby Miller. Um, no. I'm not sure you're going to find anyone better than Peralta on the pickup pile; Peralta is hitting .351 over the last 20 or so games with 12 runs and 11 RBI. (Jason Collette)
2011-07-21 16:00:00 (link to chat)In a dynasty league where I'm likely to make the playoffs, would you move Pineda for Cliff Lee? How do you weigh the present against the future in such a situation?
(doog7642 from MN)
As my good friend Cory Schwartz says, Flags Fly Forever. I know I crapped on trading Shelby Miller earlier, but Ryan Theriot is not winning me a flag. Cliff Lee brings home the bacon....I do that deal. (Jason Collette)
2010-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What type of ceiling do you see for Starlin Castro?
(Matt from Chicago)
In a few years hell be able to afford whatever type of ceiling he wants tin, mahogany, mother-of-pearl, his choice. Hes not going to develop Hanley-esque power, wont steal plenty of bases, and isnt a superlative shortstop. However, the kid can flat-out hit, and should maintain enough of an average to keep his OBP acceptable. In this day and age, when Cesar Izturis still has a job and Ryan Theriot is viewed as a SS upgrade by a contender, hes got a well-rounded skill-set that will soon be worth millions. Peak of Edgar Renteria, maybe? (Ken Funck)
2010-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)For a year where there weren't any SS to be had, it sure appears like there are a lot of SS to be had. Bartlett, Hardy, Drew, Alexei Ramirez, Jeter!, OCab, then on through to Ian Desmond, Nishioka, Brendan Ryan, Ryan Theriot, and down to Punto, Tejada, Augie Ojada and anyone else. Was it a bad year for SS, or just for decent ones?
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
Some of those names said to be available I just don't quite get -- not that you're wrong in naming them. Why wouldn't a team want to keep guys like Drew or Ramirez, given how rare any offensive production from a shortstop has become? There's a lot of guys out there, but not too many I like.

Going from Ryan to Theriot mystifies me, BTW, because Ryan's glove is a godsend behind all those groundball pitchers in Busch, and it's not like Theriot is Arky Vaughan or something. I can see trying to upgrade on offense, but I'm not convincd the possible improvement at the plate is worth the defensive hit. (Ken Funck)
2010-08-17 14:45:00 (link to chat)What kind of slash line cam I expect from Blake DeWitt next season? I have been pleasantly surprised by him since coming over from LAD- despite mediocre defense.
(Matt from Chicago)
Over the last three seasons, DeWitt's SLG marks have been .383, .388, .388. His OBP has bounced around a bit but he is probably capable of a .335-.343 rate assuming his BA can stay in the .265-.275 range. I would assume the absolute best a projection would have him at is something like .280/.360/.420, which isn't too great for a hypothetical 90th percentile. If I were a betting man I'd say DeWitt hits .262/.343/.384 next year with about average defense. If I recall correctly, Kevin Goldstein once said that DeWitt has the prettiest swing that will never produce at the big league level. He has more offensive potential than Ryan Theriot, but, well, that's not really saying much. (Eric Seidman)
2010-06-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)You got me started on this- Geovanny Soto has a .406 OBP and a .463 slug. Ryan Theriot has a .313 OBP and .309 slug. Theriot hits 2nd, Soto 7th. Why would a GM smart enough to draft Heydon Simpson 15th overall continue to allow Piniella to manage? That whole system needs an overhaul...
(steve from boston)
I know some people disagree with me on this, but I feel like the only curse the Cubs have dealt with over the years is their own management.

I'm going to be heading out soon folks, so lightning round time. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ryan Theriot's abrupt transformation from short shortstop to 2bman has, from a fan's eye view, gone off pretty much without a hitch defensively. Should a fan be even a little concerned about a greater injury risk? I mean my 7 year old daughter would be crushed if the riot wasn't playing at all.
(George from Chicago)
There's always a minor positional change risk. 2B is one of the tougher ones, but here's an interesting thought -- how many times does the play that really is the danger happen? Someone hit Retrosheet and count up how many times the average 2B has his back to a barreling runner? Some of the time, the runner's really not a threat. Sometimes, the 2B will get it in time and cross the bag, never really in danger of the runner. Really though, the risk is in that one awkward time where the move isn't automatic and the play is a bit unlucky. There's a very random element to traumatic injuries. (Will Carroll)
2009-12-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)As a Red Sox fan, would you have any interest whatsoever in Ryan Theriot for SS? Not that I think the Cubs are wanting to trade him, but they've told him they want him to move to 2B to make room for Starlin Castro. Now might be a time to get something for him; he's posted positive UZR/150 at SS for 2 years now, and can get on base at a decent clip.
(Nate from Philadelphia)
If that were on the table I would explore it. Theriot's better than he looks because shortstop is really just awful league wide. (Marc Normandin)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)The Cubs are crushing the Reds. Aramis has a 4 hit day. With him now healthy, can anything stop the Cubs?
(Jason Rose from Itasca)
Yes, Lilly just went on the DL, Harden is a DL-risk every time he toes the rubber, Bradley and Soriano might not come out of their funks, and Ryan Theriot needs a haircut. (Eric Seidman)
2009-02-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bryan, have you picked up on Jim Hendry's fondness for Notre Dame players? I'm wondering if you think it's beginning to cloud his judgment (i.e. the acquisition of Aaron Heilman)?
(Shane from Bucktown)
I brought this up to Paul Mainieri -- coach of LSU, former coach of Notre Dame, who was with the Irish when Heilman and Samardzija and Grant Johnson and the rest went there. Mainieri laughed, and reminded that the connection runs deeper: Paul and Ryan Dempster are still good friends since Dempster committed to ND (ultimately choosing pro ball out of high school), and infields Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot are LSU grads, both of whom Mainieri has become friendly with. Don't be surprised if the Cubs draft a LSU player or two in the upcoming draft ... it's always been a fondness for Mainieri moreso than for Notre Dame. (Bryan Smith)
2008-06-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your feeling about Ryan Theriot's start? Do you think he can keep it up?
(CubbieAce from Chicago)
Ryan has been very impressive. I think Lou wants to give him more rest this season to avoid the fade he had at the plate in September last season. So far, so good. (Len Kasper)
2008-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)When people on baseball prospectus, ESPN, scouts inc, etc. have analyzed the cubs the last two years they haven't mentioned that the cubs Defensive Efficiency has been top notch. I think they ranked second last year and rank second this year as well. Is their defense really this good? And how do they make up for the gapping hole that Ryan Theriot leaves at shortstop defensively?
(Pat from Chicago)
Interesting point. Derrek Lee is obviously a great first baseman, and Soriano has proven to be surprisingly strong in left, giving the team two strong corners with Fukudome in right. But center field is the issue--the Cubs defense is going to regress with Pie in Triple-A. Johnson is a marginal center fielder, and Edmonds has lost a good bit of range. I'm not sure about shortstop, but it's tough to pull Theriot out of the lineup as long as he has that .400 OBP, as far above his head as he's playing. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Troy Tulowitzki. Is he going to turn it around? If I can get him for James Shields, should I? My current SS is Khalil Greene and it's a 16 team league.
(ted from cannot reveal my location)
No! James Shields is the man. Seriously. Isn't Ryan Theriot available? That's who I picked up to stop the Khalil pain. I like Tulo plenty, but he didn't hit on the road last year, and if he doesn't this year then you have someone useful for 81 games, some of which he's already tanked in. (Marc Normandin)
2008-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ronnie Cedeno ... Real or unreal?
(jlewando from DC)
More unreal than real. At that, he's better than Ryan Theriot. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Orlando Cabrera or Ryan Theriot?
(huckyoda from NYC)
Cabrera, and it's not even close. Decent enough hitter who should be helped in the move from Anaheim to the Cell, and a waaaaay better fielder. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why is everyone down on Mark DeRosa? I haven't checked his fielding stats beyond I guess his RF was around 4.8 and his ZR was at .850 at 2nd that would have put him in the top three in ZR and top 10 or so in RF in all the MLB. Even though he didn't play 2nd exclusively, what is preventing him from being a good answer at shortstop if Roberts gets traded? He is very patient now, and has some gap power?
(Pat Larkin from Chicago)
Amen, Pat. I really don't get why the Cubs are so determined to achieve a modest upgrade on DeRosa by dealing away anything of near-term value for Roberts. I understand the desire to have depth, and that having DeRosa around as an alternate at third or the outfield corners might work, but as a shortstop, he'd just give Ryan Theriot too much of a fighting chance to remain a regular. I really don't think this is an area where the Cubs need to make a move; their masterstrokes have been to sign Fukudome and to commit to Soto, and I like the possibility of Cedeno taking the job at short from Theriot.
