BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 The failed Phillies’ first-rounder has found a niche on the banks of the Ohio River. Taylor accepts his backup role and isn’t without uses. He can pinch run, play good defense anywhere in the outfield, and won’t kill a team in an occasional start against a right-handed hurler. However, Boone is too willing to put Taylor and his sub-300 OBP in the lineup for extended stretches when a regular is sidelined, a common recent occurrence with Griffey’s bad wheels.
2002 Tools goof who can’t stay healthy. The Phils really need to give up on this guy; they’ve been pushing him through their system since 1996 despite a lack of tangible progress. If they’re looking for a fourth outfielder, the organization is awash in potential candidates, such as Eric Valent and Jason Michaels. Taylor appears to be beyond any redemption via instruction, so unless the Herb Washington role is coming back into vogue, he’s a bad use of instruction time.
2001 Reggie Taylor is an ugly legacy of the previous "development" process in the Phillies system. A number-one pick with the drool-worthy five tools, he hasn’t gotten nearly enough coaching to turn those tools into skills. This year, the Scranton coaching staff tried to inject some sense of discipline into his approach at the plate; by the end of the year, it looked like it might be starting to take hold. If this had happened three years ago when he was in A ball, his future would be much brighter.
2000 1999 was supposedly Taylor’s breakthrough year, the one in which he started to make good use of his tools. It came in his second year at Double-A, though, and it still wasn’t that good. At this point, he’s probably most useful to the Phillies as over-hyped trade bait.
1999 Would make a great wide receiver or track star, but is an all-around lousy ballplayer: no power, no plate discipline, poor baserunning skills. Burrell and Valent should bury him quickly.
1998 Philadelphia’s #1 pick in 1995. A great athlete, possessor of the mythic Five Tools, and at least he showed his power and defense this year. He brought his terrible 1996 136-to-29 strikeout-to-walk ratio all the way up to 130-to-30 this year, ensuring an acceptable 2-to-1 ratio in about 2004. But you know, he’ll still be only 27 then. Kidding aside, the defensive improvement does mean that, at peak, he now projects to be a borderline major leaguer.
1997 He’s only here because he was the Phillies’ #1 pick in 1995. He is—all together now—a great athlete. He showed himself to be a very good outfielder down in Piedmont. He is not much of a hitter. You know this refrain too—he strikes out way too much (136) and he doesn’t walk (29). When he does hit the ball, there’s no power.
