2006 Four years ago, this guy and Jake Peavy were joined at the hip. Both were Padres prospects, and they were ranked 11th and 12th on our Top 50 Prospects list. Tankersley was the guy ranked 11th, which just goes to show you that picking prospects, especially pitching prospects, is a crapshoot. Tankersley is a Quadruple-A pitcher with the standard upside that goes with any pitcher that hasn`t been tried out of the bullpen yet. Signed with the Cardinals; he`s almost old enough for La Russa and Duncan to work their magic on him.
2005 From his uneven off-field demeanor to his periodic battles on the mound, Tankersley never panned out as the 1A pitcher who'd slot in alongside Jake Peavy and lead the San Diego rotation into the next decade. More than just inner demons, Tankersley struggled with command of his fastball, and the velocity on his slider slipped from where it was two or three years ago. Traded to Kansas City with Terrence Long for Darrell May and Ryan Bukvich, Tankersley gets the fresh start he needed in Kansas City.
2003 He’s good, but is he Ed Sprague good? Tankersley’s available pitches are a fastball in the 94 range and a nasty slider, mixed in with an occasional curveball for show. He’s got the stuff and peripherals you like to see, but there are concerns that he occasionally tips his pitches, and there are rumors of coachability and maturity issues. Then again, I think most everyone’s had some coachability and maturity issues from time to time. If he can avoid distractions and focus on the field, there’s no reason to expect Tankersley to be anything except a formidable part of a nasty rotation in San Diego for years to come. That is, unless Kevin Towers feels like he absolutely has to acquire Mike Blowers from some senior league. How do Red Sox fans stand it?
2002 The Tank ripped through two levels of competition before he was shut down with a tired arm at Portland; a precautionary MRI was negative. He firmly established himself as one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, making it all the more ridiculous that he was acquired for Ed Freakin’ Sprague. He’ll be in competition for a rotation slot later in the season.
2001 Stolen from the Red Sox for four really bad weeks of Ed Sprague, Dennis Tankersley owned the Midwest League following his acquisition. Along with Peavy and Baxter, he struck out more than a batter per inning and will be moving on to Lake Elsinore next season. Given the fame and fortune of "the Eck," "the Tank" is basically his preordained nickname.
