BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 The once-promising career of Michael Stutes was put on hold by a shoulder injury in April 2012. He had surgery that June and didn't return until nearly a year later, then managed only 14 appearances before thudding back on the DL for 77 more games with biceps tendinitis. Back when he was healthy in 2011, Stutes looked like he would be a crucial bullpen piece if he could only harness his control. The to-do list is now twice as long, as he'll have to show he can stay healthy, too.
2013 A promising debut in 2011 landed Stutes on the 2012 Opening Day roster, but it was short-lived: A right-shoulder injury cost him most of the season. He managed six outings before hitting the shelf, the last of them on April 21. Arthroscopic surgery was done on the shoulder to clean it out, and Stutes began throwing again in late September. He is expected to be ready for spring training.
2012 Stutes found a place for himself on the roster over the course of the season largely by proving himself in low-leverage situations. By the end of the year, he was a go-to arm: In eight of his last 11 games, Stutes recorded either a hold or a decision. That was enough to win him a spot on the NLDS roster, and while his solitary appearance in that series was both poor and in a mop-up role, inclusion alone speaks to the confidence the team has in the Oregon State product. That faith might not be fully justified, since neither of Stutes’ two main pitches—a low-90s fastball and a slider—is a true out pitch.
2011 Michael Stutes upped his odds of landing a roster spot by pitching well in his new bullpen role, where his low-90s fastball played up. Poor control is all that holds him back now.
