BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2008 Jason Stokes has ridiculous power, but a never-ending string of injuries has limited him to a grand total of 97 games in the last three years combined.
2007 As a prospect, he`s sort of a weird blend of Rob Stratton, Mike Aubrey, and Eric Crozier; he has the strikeout issues of the first, the injury problems of the second, and the stalled prospectdom of the third. Stokes really needed to stay healthy this year and get in some development time, but he hurt his back. His one real offensive skill--hitting for power--never really materialized, he was pull-happy when he did play, and he still has unresolved strike zone issues. Stokes turned 25 in January; let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.
2006 Like Danny Glover in the `Lethal Weapon` movies, Stokes is starting to get too old for this stuff. The lad has real power--check out his comps--but injuries have hindered his development. Wrist problems held him back in the past, while last year his `hypermobile` trick thumb shelved him for all but 13 games. Stokes` plate judgment is a work in progress and he strikes out quite a bit. Until he gets some sustained playing time, it won`t be certain if he can work through these issues. With the Marlins` roster being wide open, Stokes can be a dark horse for the first base job, thereby complicating the lives of Mike Jacobs, Miguel Olivo, and Josh Willingham, but at 24, the expiration of his prospect status is approaching.
2005 Surgery on his left hamate bone in 2002 is the most obvious reason for his stagnation, but keep in mind that Stokes' strikeout rate and strikeout-to-walk ratios have remained unacceptably high, even as his power returned. Striking out in 30% of your at-bats in Double-A is a big negative, and that figure is going up as he advances. In his favor is that he's still very young and his power is real. He could put up huge power numbers at Albuquerque, but his contact rate will be the key stat.
