BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Brian Stokes’ shoulder grew tired of his pitching shortly before the Angels could, costing him most of the season. He has always thrown hard and without much movement, but returned from injury hitting only 92 mph. When the end of his career comes, southpaws will be sad to see him go, but he may have a future throwing to batters in the Home Run Derby.
2010 Stokes had an ERA right around league average, and unlike most Mets arms he stayed healthy all year, but he was about as dependable as the typical home contractor. He began the year with 11 consecutive scoreless appearances, but had a 6.20 ERA for the next two months, followed that up with a 2.39 mark in July and August, and then put a bow on it all with an 8.18 mark from there to the end of the season. He's certainly a live arm, with a 94-96 mph fastball, but he's never quite found a much-needed breaking ball. The lack of a horizontal aspect to his game has allowed southpaws to hit like All-Stars against him, lambasting him at .330/.435/.487 rates in 2009. At best, he's a ROOGY, a role that few teams have room on their rosters to accommodate.
2009 Stokes was the chief offender in perhaps the worst bullpen of all time while pitching for Tampa Bay in 2007, so the Rays were no doubt happy to sell him to New York when Minaya came calling. It proved to be a decent pickup—the hard-throwing righty did a nice job after getting called up in August, allowing just nine runs in 27 2/3 innings of relief to halve his ERA from the year before. Stokes throws in the mid-90s, but his heater runs straight and true to the target, allowing hitters to aim for the downs after triangulation. The high-paid, famous bullpen arms that were added over the offseason will likely consign him to Buffalo.
2008 An undrafted free agent, Stokes has already beaten the odds by reaching the big leagues. Unfortunately, his nine-year relationship with the Rays came to an end when he was sold to the Mets, which couldn't have amounted to much considering how poorly Stokes pitched last year. He'll be lucky to come anywhere close to making 59 big-league appearances in a season again.
2007 All organizations have guys like this: Promising pitchers at one time who have repeated a level, need to work on a third pitch, and look more like middle relievers in the making than starters. Stokes has a spot on the 40-man roster to call his own, so he`ll get a few more looks.
