DateQuestionAnswer
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am in a NL only 5x5 auction league and really debating my last carryover...I have Lance Lynn at $7, Paul Maholm at $1, Ian Stewart at $2 and Chris Nelson at $3....Considering their prices, what order would you put them in for terms of potential profit over their cost? Thanks! Chris PS--got the Starting Pitching Guide for the first time this year....WOW!!! incredible breadth of coverage and depth to the point I really feel like I have a unfair advantage going into drafting my pitchers this year...THANKS!!
(cgraham73 from Charleston, SC)
Thanks so much, Chris. As you'll note in the said guide, I like Maholm a good bit with Atlanta, but I have to go Lynn because I think he can be special. (Paul Sporer)
2012-10-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any non-superstar/star-level players who could be non-tendered that teams should kick the tires on?
(jlarsen from chicago)
With the caveat that I did less than two seconds of research, some interesting names to me are Kyle Blanks, George Kottaras, Nyjer Morgan, Mark Reynolds, Brendan Ryan, Gaby Sanchez, Geovany Soto, Ian Stewart, Drew Stubbs, Dallas Braden, Philip Humber, Tommy Hunter, Jair Jurrjens, Mike Pelfrey, and Jerome Williams. (Geoff Young)
2012-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)any chance we see Ian Stewart become a decent regular with the Cubs?
(Pablo from NJ)
I think that ship has sailed. Some guys just fail. Andy Marte, Brandon Wood, Dallas McPherson... without the name and hype, we'd have forgotten about them long ago. Sometimes we (we being the baseball community) get it wrong. (Paul Sporer)
2012-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good afternoon. Can you please rank the best 5 3B not yet in the big leagues (Rendon, Middlebrooks, etc) and if you think any can have an impact in 2012/2013.
(Ken318 from Quakertown, PA)
The honest answer is "no, we can't," unless you want us to start parroting prospect lists (speaking of which, Kevin Goldstein's Top 101 will be out next month, both on the site and in the annual). I did relay your question to Kevin, who points out that we should be keeping an eye on the Rockies' Nolan Arenado, who's coming on strong and has a clear path to the majors with Ian Stewart in Chicago.--Ben (Best of BP with Ben and Dave)
2011-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Tyler Colvin in Denver or Ian Stewart in Chicago, who has a better 2012?
(Chuck Norris' Right Fist from Choose or Die)
Ugh. Uuuuugh. Stewart. (Sam Miller)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kmowing that you covered Ian Stewart as a prospect, do you think he makes any sense for the Cubs as a reclamation project ? Their options aren't great @ 3b.
(Matt from Chicago)
I've never been a big Stewart fan, which often got Rockies fans very upset. Don't see him as an every day player. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-04-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc, when do you think Ian Stewart will get his job back in Colorado. Seems like he's just getting his spring training now after the injury. Do you see him being productive this year?
(J from Chicago)
It shouldn't be too long. Jose Lopez is hitting all of .161/.190/.286 after posting a 609 OPS in 2010, so it's not like he has anyone excellent blocking him once he's ready. (Marc Normandin)
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Stick a fork in Ian Stewart as an interesting player?
(JT from Michigan)
I'm tempted to say "Bon appetit," but let's hold off a little longer. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Care to offer an opinion about the keepability of Ian Stewart in a deep league? Or just his future in general? I'm torn between 'signs that he might be putting it all together' and 'this is what he is'.
(Rob from Alaska)
I'm not keeping Stewart in the league I have him in despite a low price tag, but we're allowed very few keepers. I think this is pretty much who he is, but that's not necessarily a bad thing given the lack of quality at his eligible positions. Not a ton of batting average, but he'll get on base and hit for plenty of power. If he could stick for a full season we wouldn't be having this discussion, he would be a no-brainer. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've got Kinsler, Tulo, Zobrist, and Ian Stewart in a 14 team mixed league. Tulo and Zobrist have really let me down and I'm in dire need of saves and power and there's definitely a market for each of those guys...which, if either should I cut bait on and trade?
(Andy from Chicago)
Tulo is a beast, and Zobrist should come along. Tulo is at the position that it's harder to get production out of, but Zobrist can move around a bit, so I guess it depends on whether you want flexibility or a hold on positional scarcity.

I don't think I would deal either for Saves unless I had no other choice whatsoever, but I'm stingy when it comes to acquiring Saves. If that's all you're missing and dealing one won't kill your other stats, I can see it. Try to get back more than just a closer, they are both studs despite the slow start. (Marc Normandin)
2009-05-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)For a team that needs a 3B, how much sense would it make to try to pry Brandon Wood away from the Angels? I mean, it seems like he's never actually going to get to play.
(Jay from DC)
I think a lot would depend on which team in which park... put Wood in Houston, for example, and he might be a star. Put him in Denver and see his strikeout rate take a park-induced dip, and people would get over Garrett Atkins or Ian Stewart in a hurry. The problem is that with the Angels (sensibly) going year to year with Figgins, there isn't much incentive for them to do anything differently than was done to, say, Al Rosen's career. Not that Wood's going to be Al Rosen, but I'd love to see what he might do in Phoenix or Denver. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, do you think the Rockies will deal Holliday in the off-season or is it more likely they deal Atkins seeing as how they won't be able to move Helton and they have Ian Stewart? If it's Holliday, who do you see being the main contenders for his services?
(Shane from Miami)
I think they'll entertain offers, because that's just sound business practice, but if there's a guy I'd rather move if money and Holliday's service time clock weren't motivating factors, it would be Atkins. I don't think anybody's going to take on Helton's contract, because between that stumbling block and the persistent back issues, I think he'd be immovable, but saying that, it's important to remember there was a time I thought Mike Hampton's contract made him immovable. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ian Stewart...
(Wendy from Madrid)
BABIP...

Breaking News (kinda): The Orioles have called up Kam Mickolio. He's kinda intersting. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-08-15 15:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Ian Stewart maintains his success into next season? What does the move to 2b do to his value?
(shamah from NYC)
I don't think we'll be seeing Stewart stick at second; the experiment was fun, but Atkins is a bad third baseman, and any questions of who plays where will almost certainly have to wait on how Todd Helton's back comes along. Which is to say I think Dan O'Dowd's in the unhappy position of having to wait this out over the winter, but if there's one source of solace, it's that Stewart's for real, and will keep doing what he's doing. 2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)If the Rockies are buyers and not sellers, who are they dangling to get SP? Ian Stewart? Dexter Fowler? I assume Holliday and Atkins are off the table.
(Rob from Alaska)
Stewart is a possibility but they seem to be looking more on the low end with guys like Fogg and Byrd and they won't have to give up a top guy to get someone like that. (John Perrotto)
2008-05-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Ian Stewart this year?
(Jericho from The Moon)
He looks like he finally exploded in the high minors, and he's been successful in his short stint in Colorado so far. He's definitely worth a flyer, especially if he has multi-positional eligibility. (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Steve, what's the deal with Ian Stewart? Is he going to have a major league career?
(Jameson from Arizona)
Of course he will, assuming some body part doesn't quit on him...

Speaking of quitting body parts, I pause to remark that something about chatting must affect my posture. I can work all day here without suffering, but as soon as I do this my back starts to go. Anyone got any muscle relaxants handy? Would a chat in which I answer most questions with "Hrghle. Don Mattingly. Blix. Hee hee hee hee" be interesting?

...Anyway, Stewart will play at some point, somewhere. He just happens to be blocked right now, and he probably has suffered a bit in the eyes of the organization because expectations of stardom turned out to be overblown. I would think he'll be a complimentary player in the future, a sub-star at best, a two-corner Hinske type at worst. (Steven Goldman)
