BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 Manna from scrap heap heaven. As deft a trade as Urbina for Ohka and Rundles was in 2001, it looked even better when Stewart filled Urbina’s void with a lights-out performance as head of the 2002 bullpen committee. Stewart keeps the ball in the park, rarely walks anyone, and can punch a guy out when he needs to. He’s young, cheap, durable, and reliable. If the Orioles can pay Buddy Groom more than $3 million a year to pitch through age 39, Stewart’s worth what, $68 kajillion? A lot of whatever imaginary note Syd Thrift’s face is on anyway.
2002 Stewart signed a minor-league contract with the Expos to escape the logjam of southpaws ahead of him in the Mets’ system. A non-roster invitee to spring training, he proceeded to win a situational job thanks to his ability to locate three pitches in the strike zone. Though Stewart’s stuff is mediocre, he doesn’t resort to trickery, instead just chucking and ducking. Sometimes his simple approach works, sometimes it doesn’t.
1999 Skipped Double-A, receiving severe head trauma in Triple-A before his demotion to Binghamton. He reestablished himself there, becoming the team's top starter in the second half. His fastball doesn't burn the radar guns, but he gets good reviews for its movement. Faces an uphill battle, but the Mets don't have to rush him.
