2003 Stechschulte melted down, but in his defense he was complaining of a stiff arm, and was diagnosed with tendonitis in both his elbow and shoulder. Signing Al Levine is a pretty good indicator that the Cards aren’t counting on him to win a job as a long reliever, but with the departures of Veres and Hackman, jobs are there for the taking. If Stechschulte’s arm is sound and he has a good camp, he could get some keen hold stats.
2002 He performed pretty well as a depth right-hander out of the bullpen. Stechschulte's strikeout rate isn't overwhelming, and he does give up a lot of long balls. He's going to have to demonstrate that he can be reliable for at least another 100 innings or so and learn to keep the ball down. LaRussa can have a very long memory when it comes to late-game home runs.
2001 Minor-league closers don't have a tremendous record of success in the majors. Gene Stechschulte has reasonable stuff, but he'll have to get an opportunity to make the club in spring training and totally blow away everyone in order to capitalize.
2000 The latest model off of the Cardinals' line of minor-league closers. What, you've forgotten Eric Miller, Jeff Matulevich, Craig Grasser, Steve Montgomery, Travis Welch, Curtis King, Kevin Crafton and Armando Almanza already? These guys all logged 30-save seasons in the Cardinal farm system over the years. Montgomery has made it in the majors, and Almanza should. Stechshulte doesn't have their talent. For both of you playing PCL rotisserie baseball and looking for a guy to give you a bunch of saves, this is probably your man.
