2012 Brad Snyder was twice a Top-100 Baseball America prospect whose robust slugging at Triple-A in 2009-10 put him in the queue for an emergency call-up, but his humdrum 2011 season moved him a lot closer to the back of the queue.
2011 Credit Hendry's scouting instincts for seeing something still there in Snyder after the former 18th overall pick from the 2003 draft washed out of the outfielder-hungry Indians organization. He has the arm for right, where he can still cover ground, he's fast on the bases, and power was never really a problem. Staying healthy and making contact had been, but last year Snyder got his strikeout rate below 25 percent for the first time as a pro, while also staying healthy. Cut loose nonetheless after the season, Snyder hits the market as a desirable minor-league free agent worth checking out by those teams desperate for outfield help.
2009 Discarded by an Indians organization desperate for outfield help, former Ball State star Brad Snyder was picked up on waivers, the thinking being that his athleticism and power potential might finally develop with a change of scenery; for that to happen, his command of the strike zone has to improve.
2008 Snyder was a first-round pick in 2003, and while he missed much of the 2007 season with a broken thumb, he has yet to address the one aspect of his game that has kept him out of the majors-his alarming strikeout rate. Snyder has a ton of tools, and you could live with his strikeouts if he was going to pound out 30 home runs a year, but he doesn't have that much power and is likely on his way to one of those Quadruple-A career paths.
2007 A first-round pick out of Ball State in 2003, Snyder is a terrific athlete with solid or better tools across the board, but his continued inability to make contact is squashing any hope of a sustained big league career. He`s struck out 158 times in each of the last two seasons, and his career rate of striking out once every 3.32 at-bats needs to be addressed before anyone can get excited about his raw power.
2006 Drafted behind Aubrey in the first round of 2003, Snyder pulled ahead of his injured draft-mate in 2005, tearing through Double-A after a June promotion and continuing his hot hitting in the Arizona Fall League. Snyder has a rifle arm, enough speed to play center, enough power to play the corners, and takes his share of walks. He could be the solution to the Indians` right field problems, perhaps as soon as the second half of this season.
2005 A Ball State product, Snyder came to the pros equipped with a willingness to work the count and take a walk, a welcome and too-rare trait. Snyder was slowed by an eye infection early on, but got it straightened out and really took off upon promotion to High-A Kinston. Snyder's been a little old for his leagues, but he's going to Double-A this year so he's actually not that far away. If his selectivity survives the big jump in competition, he'll come quickly and will crisp Coco, or whoever's the RF du jour.

(BL from Bozeman)
In the baseball division, I finally picked up a copy of D'Antonio's Forever Blue, and I keep meaning to crack Brad Snyder's A Well-Paid Slave (about Curt Flood). I'm currently finishing up Sebestyen's 1989 (a light run through the fall of the Wall) and Howe's What Hath God Wrought (heavy slog through 1815-1848 US history), and debating whether to turn to Herwig's new history of First Marne or Blom's The Vertigo Years. Also, Kerr's A Quiet Flame needs attention, since I like the Bernie Gunther series quite a bit. (Christina Kahrl)
