BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 The short leg of the stool Colorado received in the Holliday heist, Smith spent the season dealing with shoulder problems and posted unimpressive numbers across three levels. The Rockies are giving him a mulligan, and expect him to compete for a big-league job this year, perhaps in the rotation. But Smith walks too many and whiffs too few to profile as much more than a situational lefty, and since the club has a vacancy there, if hes healthy he might just stick.
2009 Smith came over as an extra arm in the Haren deal, and it was a big surprise when he made the Opening Day rotation. Even more surprising was the fact that he held his own, at least on a runs-allowed level. The problem is every other aspect to his game makes this look like a fluke, as his ratios are just not conducive to this kind of success. What you are looking at is likely Smith's career year, with his trade to Colorado making that even more likely.
2008 Smith missed the first month of 2007 with some shoulder weakness, but that didn't stop him from earning a promotion to Triple-A, where he finished strong, allowing only four runs in his last four starts (23 IP). Armed with only standard lefty velocity, Smith might aspire to being the next Doug Davis, as he relies on a nifty curve and change and has a top-notch pickoff move. He was outstanding as a starter in the Arizona Fall League, but he's got the stuff to be a quality situational lefty right now. Figuring out how to employ him is Oakland's problem now, as Smith was the third southpaw swapped to the A's in the Haren deal.
