BP Annual Player Comments

2003 The Orioles seem to believe that Singleton was a huge disappointment, which leads you to wonder just what they were expecting. His translated rate stats for 1999–2001 total .291/.324/.451; his translated stats in Baltimore were .287/.324/.450. His fielding was a little worse than in the past, but on the whole he delivered exactly what his resume promised. PECOTA doesn’t think he’ll age well, and neither do we or the Orioles; he was non-tendered in December, then signed by Oakland to a one-year deal to patch over their scar in center.
2002 Another player who should be part of a good Sox bench this year, Singleton is a very good center fielder, hits enough to be an asset off the bench—even against lefties—and can step into the lineup without killing the team. He'll make a great caddy for Borchard, able to play against tough righties and come in for defense in the late innings.
2001 One way of looking at players and lineups is by asking, “if Fred Mertz were the worst hitter in your lineup, would that be good or bad?” With Chris Singleton, the answer is unclear. Neither corner outfielder covers a lot of ground, so the Sox need a good defensive center fielder and Singleton is their best glove. His hitting and fielding suffered when he played through a dislocated finger in May, so I agree with Wilton that he’ll bounce back, probably even more than this projection indicates.
2000 While I'm not really optimistic about his future, you can't help but love what he did. He's an exaggerated example of a claim we'll make for several players throughout this book: there are minor leaguers who can play this game if they get the chance. Singleton is probably the ultimate Manuel player--quiet, Christian, a good glove man and situational hitter, but not great at playing baseball.
1998 Here’s an idea: take a base on balls once in awhile. Singleton is a football player trying to make himself into a baseball player. It isn’t working. Traded to the Yankees for Charlie Hayes, he has very little chance of showing up in the majors.
