BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Steven Shell refused assignment to the Nats' Triple-A squad, so he arranged to take his beatings at Tacoma instead. He's always had a decent arm and showed some signs of life this winter in Venezuela.
2009 Shell escaped from the Angels' system as a minor league free agent, signing on with the Nationals. The Angels had been experimenting with switching him to relief, albeit half-heartedly; the Nationals were more aggressive about it. He was sensational out of the pen at Columbus; the stats don't look as impressive as they should, thanks to the four starts he made (with a reasonable 4.09 ERA) dragging down the excellent 1.73 he sported in relief. Called up in late June, he helped to solidify the pen in the second half.
2007 A middling talent, `Snail` Shell throws relatively average velocity, but with good movement and mixes in a solid curve. Shell might be the bomb, but that`s only because he`s always ticking towards an eventual explosion--he frustrates insiders with a tendency to get intimidated in jams and attempt to pitch around trouble before detonating. With runners on base last year, Shell got tattooed for a .349 average and .540 SLG, the sort of mark you regret the morning after, whatever body part it`s been inked on. He has a good frame and decent stuff, but he`s clearly going to have to become some pitching coach`s special project if he`s going to pan out.
2006 Walks up, strikeouts down--that`s moving the wrong way. The Texas League is no place to try and make a living as a pitcher, but Shell simply didn`t show much against tougher competition. The one ray of hope was an improved second half--he went from 6.89 K/9 and 3.73 BB/9 in his first 17 starts to 7.39 K/9 and 2.60 BB/9 in his last ten; 15 of his 18 homers were given up before July 1, but only three after. Needs to turn things around quickly to stay a top prospect in the organization.
2005 Returned to Rancho after some elbow tenderness slowed him last year and justified his standing as one of the best prospects in the organization, finishing 23 runs above replacement, and more importantly striking out 10.3 per nine innings while maintaining the command for which he is best known. He also held up under his heaviest professional workload. The stage is set for a rapid rise, though at higher levels his good location could work against him in the form of high batting averages. He'll need to make those adjustments as he moves along, but this one has some serious upside.

2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do the Nats have the worst bullpen in baseball history?
(Mike from D,C.)
There are ways to measure this, and I think that barring a substantial improvement, they will end up having the worst pen in history. It's not just that they don't have good pitchers; it's that they have no good pitchers *behind* the current staff, and it's possible they released their best one (Steven Shell). (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)This only matters for fantasy - who gets saves for the Nats?
(Manny from DC)
Mock is next in line, and I don't expect that to go well. I was disappointed that they caught Steven Shell in the purge, as I think he's one of the better options. They'll circle back to Hanrahan by June 15 and he'll end up leading the team. (Joe Sheehan)
