2008 Rather than hoping for a non-roster invite this spring, Jae Seo signed a ?1.5 billion deal to return to his native South Korea and pitch for the Kia Tigers, joining Hee-Seop Choi as the Tigers' prodigal sons. Sure, 1.5 billion won is worth "only" $1.6 million U.S., but it's still several times what he'd be making on a minor league deal, and he'll be earning it at home
2007 Sometimes you need a little finesse, sometimes you need a lot. Seo arrived from L.A. and had a rotation spot waiting for him, but promptly lost his command and his ability to miss bats--and he didn`t have a lot of room for error in either department to begin with. It worked out in the end, but his low ERA hid some nasty peripherals. Seo benefited greatly from a bullpen which did a commendable job of stranding his baserunners when he was lifted from games in mid-inning; his Fair RA, which factors in bequeathed runners, checks in at a hefty 5.80, making his combined 2006 ERA of 5.33 look good, and that`s not good.
2006 Sent back to Norfolk to work on his control, he did just that, getting back into favor by making his walk explosion of 2004 a memory. Having improved his command and his mechanics, he was called up to replace Ishii, who`d been even more clueless about such things, and was given a good two-month run to win the fifth slot for `06. While Benson was the starting pitcher dangled in deals all winter long, Seo`s performance made him the more attractive commodity. That certainly seemed to be what Ned Colletti thought when he picked him up along with Hamulack in early January.
2005 Seo's inability to be better than replacement level indirectly led to the Benson and Zambrano trades. He needs to give up as few walks as possible to succeed, and last year, the command wasn't there. Like Ginter and Heilman, Seo awaits word on Zambrano's health to determine his '05 role. A change of scenery would help.
2003 The bad news is that Seo has lost a lot of velocity since having surgery on his elbow in 1999. The good news is that he got a lot sharper in 2002 once the Mets broke him of his ritual of not eating the day of his start. Heís still in the low 90s, mixes in a splitter that makes him tough on lefties looking for something to drive, and usually tries to finish hitters off with his changeup. Heís probably never going to be much more than an adequate fifth starter, but thatís a higher upside than some people felt Cory Lidle had not so long ago.
2002 After missing almost two years as a result of Tommy John surgery, Seo made an impressive comeback at the top three levels of the Mets minor-league system in 2001. His velocity wasnít as good as it was before the surgery, but Seo demonstrated strong command of a 90-mph fastball, a deceptive change-up, and a curveball. Even though Seo is polished enough to pitch in the major leagues now, the Mets will likely let him build up his arm strength in the minors for much of the 2002 season, especially after tendinitis kept him out of the Arizona Fall League.
2001 Jae Weong Seo is considered one of the Metsí top prospects despite making just 13 appearances in three seasons since coming to the States. He spent the entire 2000 season rehabbing from May 1999 Tommy John surgery. The Mets must have seen enough from him to think heís going to recover, because they added him to their 40-man roster in November. Before the surgery, he had electric stuff and good control. Heís expected to start 2001 at Binghamton.
2000 A South Korean with a delivery as funky as any of the Asian imports, Seo has been sidelined by elbow problems the last two years and had to have surgery last season. He had a good mix of pitches before the arm problems and was an important part of Korea winning the Asian Gamesí gold medal last winter.
