2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a 5x5 (with obp) in which I have a big lead in steals, should I drop Jean Segura for Alexei Ramirez or Jhonny Peralta? I was wondering this before his tragedy, and now I wonder if he will even be able to come back any time soon. Hopefully he and his family can find a way to get through this.
(Hangin on from D.C.)
Yeah, it's just horrific what happened to Segura and his family. Awkwardly shifting to the fantasy angle, I'd go for Peralta if you're looking for non-speed offense. (Paul Sporer)

I think this was a double question (Paul Sporer)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)20 team dynasty league and my only SS are Cozart and Rutledge. Should I trade Joc Pederson and Matt Joyce for Jean Segura?
(BigMac25 from Montreal)
No. I agree that shortstop is an issue on your roster, but Joc Pederson is too much for Segura. Segura will have the steals. He needs to prove he can actually keep the baseball off the ground, if he's going to be anything more than a slap hitter w/ a solid-average glove at shortstop. I thought he'd bounce back from his poor second half in 2013. I've been disappointed.

To be clear, I still like Segura well-enough in dynasty leagues. Pederson is just too much to give. (J.P. Breen)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jean Segura is just E-Cab in disguise isn't he? He so teased us with his H1-13!
(chri521 from NYC)
Nah, I don't think it's that easy. I like what Jean Segura brings to the table. He just needs to learn to utilize it better. (J.P. Breen)

2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)16 team dynasty league...I received a Sonny Gray for Starlin Castro deal(I'd be the one getting Gray). I already own Jean Segura. I gotta take this, right?
(Sick Rutcliffe from CA)
Yes, I was late to the Gray party but I prefer him to Castro, especially if you already own a better shortstop. (Ben Carsley)

Bearish, relative to PECOTA, on Jean Segura. Will have to think of a bullish one for you. (Sam Miller)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty league, 7x7; Jose Abreu or Jean Segura? I have Ian Desmond at SS already, and Belt/Dunn at 1B.
(Gotribe31 from DC)
As someone who's a bit higher on Abreu and a bit lower on Segura than many ... the answer is still Segura, easy. Solve your log jam a different way. And don't rely on Dunn. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)I just gave TINO 5 stars. Great stuff, even if it does have me agreeing with #Craij more often than I'd like. I have picks 2 and 4 in our dynasty draft this year (it's been going for about 6 years). Will have some combination of Tanaka, Abreu, Jean Segura, Danny Salazar and Nate Jones. I need saves, but the thought of taking Jones over any of those guys creeps me out. What's your personal pref list on those 5?
(Gotribe31 from DC)
Thank you for the rating, and it would be the cutest thing ever if everyone else could do the same! Segura, big gulf, Salazar, Tanaka, Abreu, big gulf, Jones. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)How good is Segura in a dynasty format? Is he a legit Top 5 SS year after year?
(eliyahu from Washington, DC)
I don't quite see Jean Segura as that good. He could fall in to the Top 5 now and again, but I don't see it as an automatic proposition. The power ceiling might not be that high given the ground ball profile and while the steals are great in shallower leagues those are a little easier to replace. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Mike, thanks for all the info and humor. Follow up on a Segura question. In a H2H Points Dynasty league, I can keep either Segura for $6 or Hanley for $33. Since both play SS I can only choose one. $300 Auction with no limit on how long you can keep a player, $5 inflation per year. Which one would you choose?
(RussHaigis from San Diego)
Hi Russ:

Hanley Ramirez is the better player but at those prices I think you have to keep Jean Segura given the significant price difference. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be the top 5 fantasy SS in 2015?
(Jim from Boston )
Gee Jim, way to put me on the spot.

Injuries last year make this a tough position to rank, but I would go Troy Tulowitzki, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Ian Desmond, and Jean Segura. Hanley would rank #1 if I wasn't concerned that he wouldn't get hurt again/miss time, but all of the top three have injury concerns. I'd rank Segura higher but I'm not sold on him as a top option. However, given who else is out there, he should stick in the Top 5 in 2014. The position is a little thinner than I once thought. (Mike Gianella)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Was Jean Segura's year last year a career year, or should we expect that to be about the norm?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I think it's much closer to the norm than a career year. I'm a big fan. (Bret Sayre)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)Would you rather have Tulo or Hanley next year in fantasy? Also, approximately where would you rank Everth Cabrera for next year, especially compared to guys like Reyes and Segura? Thanks!
(Joe from NYC)
Hey Joe.

I think I'd go with Hanley Ramirez. He earned $26 in 304 ABs to Troy Tulowitzki's $26 in 446 ABs. Even if you don't believe in Hanley maintaining that pace, the move to LA seems to have woken him up. Tulo could be traded, and while he's still a great player, a move to any non-Coors venue is going to have a negative impact. I like Hanley.

Hard to rank Cabrera coming off of his suspension. For all of the talk of how PEDs impact power, there is more of a proven connection to speed/endurance for players using PEDs. Jose Reyes and Jean Segura both have power and Cabrera doesn't. Even in a best case scenario for Cabrera, Reyes and Segura rank ahead of him. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Was the Hickory team for the Rangers the most star studded prospect team in recent memlryr
(Mark from Charlotte )
Give me the 2010 Cedar Rapids Kernels. Mike Trout, Pat Corbin, Tyler Skaggs, Johnny Hellweg, Garrett Richards, Ariel Pena, Fabio Martinez, Jean Segura, Randal Grichuk. Man, the Angles traded almost every single one of those guys away. And you wonder why their farm system is barren right now. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)How do you view Jean Segura in the long term as a keeper? Where would you rank him?
(Chris from California)
Hey Chris.

Segura has tailed off somewhat after a terrific start, but he still has to be viewed as a Top 5 option at shortstop and perhaps a second or third round pick overall. His numbers are comparable to what many expected out of Jose Reyes coming into 2013, and Reyes was a second round pick in most formats. The power might drop a little for Segura, but the speed is legit...and speed has dropped off enough across the board that we shouldn't simply look at 30-40 SB guys in mixed as "pedestrian" (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jean Segura is slumping relative to our new expectations. This is due to A) Major League pitchers found a flaw that will be very difficult for Segura to recover from; B) It's a flaw that he will solve sooner than later; C) He is hiding an injury; D) His slump is an illusion based on random chance; E) He really just wasn't that good; F) _________ [fill in the blank]
(Hoot John Carter from Toronto)
A and possibly B. Baseball is a game of adjustments, and the best players are the ones that can figure out the secondary adjustments without losing consistency. The league is adjusting to Segura. It's his turn to make an adjustment. (Jason Parks)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Jean Segura a top 5 SS next year?
(The Dude from Office)
I think so. Unless he just CRATERS, then yeah I could definitely see that. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)I've got five shortstops born over the course of six months, September 1989-March 1990. Take contract status out, but considering all else, how do you rank them for the short and the long term? Andrelton Simmons, Ruben Tejada, Didi Gregorius, Jean Segura, Starlin Castro.
(Matt Trueblood from Fridley, MN)
Short: Castro, Segura, Gregorius, Simmons, Tejada
Long: Castro, Segura, Simmons, Gregorius, Tejada (Sam Miller)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know you've always liked Jean Segura, but did you envision him taking off this fast? Lots of #want in that kid, it appears.
(sprite from Wantsville, Idaho)
I didn't think he would hit for this kind of over-the-fence power. I really like him, but I'm surprised by it. Good for him. He's a lot of fun to watch. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Just dealt Headley, Fister & Asdrubal for Yu Darvish & Jean Segura. Thoughts? Thanks!
(Luke from NYC)
Hot fire. I believe enough in Segura to make that worthwhile. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which players have been the biggest surprise for you in the early going? Do you think those players will continue to do well, or is an early-season fluke?
(Mike from Michigan)
Jean Segura has probably been the most pleasant surprise, and while I don't expect him to maintain a .380s batting average, it sure looks like the Brewers have found a long-term solution at shortstop. On the pitching side, Matt Harvey and Jose Fernandez have been immensely impressivemore than anyone could really have expected, especially for Fernandez, who is only 20. I'm looking forward to seeing if he can keep it going against a better offense in a tough park tonight. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Andrelton Simmons or Jean Segura having a potential top 10 SS season?
(Thad from Peoria)
Segura, maybe. Simmons, no. (Bret Sayre)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any rookies you expect to be especially productive in 2013?
(Alex from Anaheim)
A lot of these guys came up at the end of last year, not sure if they are still considered rookies. But Adam Eaton and Jean Segura are likely two of the top producers. (Paul Singman)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Jean Segura could be a top 10 fantasy SS? His final month last season has me intrigued.
(zissou from naples)
Not this year. I see mostly speed at this point and am thinking Top 15 might be the ceiling. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have a chance to get Jean Segura for Wily Peralta in my Scoresheet league.Would you do it ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
I would. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Not a prospect any more (barely) but what do you see for Jean Segura this year and long term?
(Rob from Alaska)
I've always enjoyed watching him play. He's a solid-avg player that is going to have major league success. I dig it. It's not going to be incredible, but its going to be, if that makes any sense. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Jean Segura, can we expect close to 40 Stolens and a .330+ OBP? Also I would like to guage your thoughts on Matt Den Deker... does he ever become a 1st division starting player that is not looking to get upgraded? Thank you in advance.
(Greg from NY)
Are we talking this year or peak value for Segura? I could see Roenicke giving him the green light. The OBP is harder to peg but .330 seems doable. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Apropos of the Brewers under 25 list today, what kind of production do you expect from Jean Segura this year, and then at his peak?
(Rob from Alaska)
I think Brewers fans should expect a big jump forward from Segura this year. He is a really nice offensive talent. He has bat speed and good hands. The ball jumps off his bat and I think you could see a .280-.290 hitter with lots of doubles and 10-15 home runs at his peak. If he remains at shortstop, which he should, that's a dynamite talent. (Mark Anderson)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there more believers in Jean Segura's ability to stick at shortstop now? Or is it still a "wait and see" situation?
(Mr. B from Milwaukee, WI)
From what I've seen this year, he's look fine at SS. Is he above-average? Not really. But even a major league average shortstop has tremendous value. He's a good player. Not a star, but he's a solid major leaguer. I'd take him on my team. (Jason Parks)
2012-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of season can we expect from the Brewer's new everyday SS Jean Segura next year?
(sitdancer from DC)
Solid if unspectacular. I don't think he's a star, more of a solid everyday guy that you're not actively looking to replace. Could see him having some Orlando Hudson-type seasons at the plate, and possibly in the field (not sold that he'll stick at short). (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-08-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts and expectations for Jean Segura playing for the Brewers the rest of the season? Should Brewer fans be getting excited for things to come from this 22 year old kid?
(Aaron from Oshkosh, WI)
I think you should be excited, but probably not for this year. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-07-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who has most upside, Devin Morasco or Jean Segura?
(lnodolf from Fillmore, CA)
Mesoraco, due to position. (Jason Collette)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)For this year and the future, who provides more value: Jean Segura or Tyler Pastornicky?
(cooldude from Mpls)
This year: Pastornicky. Future: Segura. Be careful with Pastornicky, though. He's a good bet for full-time at-bats, but if he bats 8th (he should), that's the kiss of death for a National League speedster, and the Braves SS doesn't offer much else. (Derek Carty)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jean Segura - one year removed from the move to SS - what are the comments on his ability to stick at SS?
(SenatorsGuy from DC)
He's one year removed, but he barely played because of the hamstring issues, so we need more data. Early returns were promising however. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sam, what player on the Angels, if any, will take the mantle from Jerome Williams as the player to have his name mispronounced for 2+ seasons? My money is on Michael Kohn.
(ericstephen from SB Nation LA)
Kohn is a good one. Jean Segura -- I could see people wanting to class it up and calling him Jean like John, like he's french. A lot of people have trouble with Bourjos as it is. Bourjos is like "museum" or "mirror," where it just doesn't quite sound right no matter how you say it. (Sam Miller)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Anything worth noting (other than delayed by injury) on this summer's performance by last year's fav under the radar prospect Jean Segura?
(Paul from DC)
He looked pretty good at shortstop. That's important. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-08-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you heard any recent reports on Jean Segura? I know he has missed time this season with injuries.
(Jason from Sacramento)
Yes. He's been up and down this year, and injuries have no doubt played a role in the struggles. When healthy, Segura has first-division potential, and I think he has the chops to stay at SS. Others disagree, but I've seen enough to recognize the actions and they are or major league quality. Let's hope the bat comes around because he would be an exciting player at the highest level. (Jason Parks)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could Jean Segura crack the top 10 next year if he continues to hit for excellent average and steals bases?
(Jose Segura from Santo Domingo)
I don't think he's that kind of player, but I do love him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Professor, will Jean Segura be the #1 SS prospect in baseball at this time next year?
(bretsayre from nj)
If he can stick at SS, its entirely possible, although my money is on Machado (Jason Parks)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Can Alexi Amarista hit enough to be an every day player?
(achaik from maine)
Not a huge fan. As far as Angels middle infielders go, gimme Jean Segura. (Kevin Goldstein)
