2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Scribner has proven himself in the bush leagues with a sub-3.00 ERA covering more than 300 innings on the farm. His dominance of the strike zone is evident in a career K-to-walk ratio of 4.5-to-one. He finds himself in the system of a Western Division franchise for the third time in his six years as a professional, and he capped his most successful season with a couple of scoreless innings in the ALDS against the Tigers. Scribner may not have the velocity to guarantee second chances, but he has the confidence in his curveball to unleash the bender in any count, keeping opposing batters from sitting on his mild-mannered fastball.
2012 The Padres acquired Scribner at the 2008 trade deadline in exchange for 36 games of late-career Tony Clark. Scribner has escaped the attention of scouts due to a shortness of stuff and is best described as "one of those guys who just gets people out." His career K/9 (10.9) and K/BB (4.6) are nice to look at, but he didn't show much in his first (admittedly brief) big-league trial. He is likely a Quadruple-A pitcher, but insurance is never a bad thing, and the A's plucked him off waivers in October.
2011 Evan Scribner repeated Double-A in 2010 and finished with yet another impressive ERA, but his success has stemmed from polished command rather than pure stuff. The right-hander's velocity is nothing special, but the Padres will have room for him at Triple-A, where he could eventually turn into a major-league-quality middle reliever—there are worse things than pitchers who can consistently hit their spots. If all else fails, he can resort to publishing trade books.
